The Other Side forums - suitable for mature readers! _ Introductions and where to find a guide _ Jus A Thread To Help The Noobs

Posted by: gerbilfromhell Apr 20 2003, 09:52 PM

since there's always questions about the forum and new things bein found out constantly, i'm makin an faq to help the noobs here

q: how do you post (this's a real question, many ppl dun know how to post)
a: go below the last post on any page of a thread and there'll be an 'add reply' button. click on it, type your post, and click 'submit post'

q: how do you edit posts
a: in the top right corner of your posts, there's an 'edit' button next to the 'quote' button

q: how do you use color/font/bold/italics/underline/size
a: you've gotta highlight the word/s you're gonna enlarge, color, etc.

q: what's a custom title and how can i get it?
a: a custom title is somethin a poster with over 500 posts can put instead of the standard level name (newbie/member/advanced member/ etc.)

q: are 1 and 14 the smallest and largest sizes
a: no, you can manually change the size once you've highlighted and selected a size for a word/group of words. largest is somethin like 33 (jus put whatever # above that you want, it'll automatically go to the largest allowable size) smallest is -7

more to come later (when i think of them add some yourself if you think of one i didn't include)

Posted by: craziness Apr 20 2003, 09:58 PM

meh forget what i just posted i messed it up

Posted by: gerbilfromhell Apr 20 2003, 10:01 PM

(look, i jus discovered somethin)
btw, next to the color button there's a 'close all tags' button. that might help ppl. or you can jus highlight the text before you select the color or size or whatever (see, thing're gettin discovered constantly biggrin.gif )

maybe someone could put on here an explaintion of adoting a noob and the other ways of owning ppl like minions and anti-minions... (i don't understand the whole minion thing)

isn't there a thread in the introductions thread devoted to adoptation. mabey someone could link it.... or better yet, i could link it. okay, here goes... http://www.matazone.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=196

Posted by: gerbilfromhell Apr 20 2003, 10:20 PM

(sry, zoey, that explains noobs only)

q: what's a minion/anit-minion
a: a minion is someone with less posts than you who you seize as your minion. it's almost like adoptin a noob cause you do kinda hafta tell them to post more and there's an unimplied helpin thing (you answer questions, back them up when their bein dissed) but you also get to order them to do stuff (not that they actually have to). an anti-minion is like an anti-noob (sorta). you seize someone with more posts than you, tell them to post less, and sorta hafta back each other up in the forum

Posted by: gerbilfromhell Apr 20 2003, 10:54 PM

q: what do i do if a post offends me/threatens me/ has un-allowed content in it?
a: there is a 'report this post' button in the lower right corner of every post, click on it, post your complaint, and it will be sent to mata and jonman (and whoever else becomes a mod)

Posted by: Sun Tsu Apr 20 2003, 11:37 PM

Whats an anti-n00b? I know what a n00b is, but I don't get this.

a NooB that is no longer a nooB, I think. . .

Posted by: craziness Apr 20 2003, 11:43 PM

no its not
antinoob was my idea
when you are a newbie, someone adopts you and shows youaround, encourages you to post more, and stuff.
an antinoob is someone who you adopt who has more posts than you, and you tell them they post too much.

a NooB that is no longer a nooB, I think. . .

that would be a foob (well, sorta, when your noob graduates you can ask him to become your foob but s/he can only be YOUR foob and no one else's)
neways, i've thought of another one which many ppl might not know

q: are those the ONLY colors to use?
a: NO! there are many others. jus type in the color you want after highlightin the word/phrase and pickin a color. it's jus like makin new sizes. i dun know all the colors that you can use, experiment for yourselves and find out. if it's a non-forum-existin color, it'll show up in your post without changin the color and you can edit your post to change it to a different color

i have that as one of the questions. and yes, prez, run.... run as far as you can for gerbil is helpin ppl

q: HELP! MY THREAD DIED! what happened? can i save it? (this quesiton really isn't for noobs and probably won't be a problem to anyone but me for a really long time)
a: your thread wasn't posted on for 30 days and yes, it can be saved, there's a few menu bar thingys at the bottom of the 4 forums, one of them says 'viewing from' and then lotsa choices. the auto choice is 'the last 30 days' but if you select 'the beginnin' then your thread will be SAVED! (c'mon ppl make your own questions i know i've missed somethin)

q: what happens if you post less than your minion/ post more than your anti-minion?
a: if your minion posts more than you, he is freed but can be seized again at a later time (leo got freed but i seized him again later), if you post more than your anti-minion, you are free and able to seize someone else as your anti-minion

q: what's the most characters you can use in a post? am i gonna need to shorten my posts sometimes?
a: unless you're me, no you will never reach the limit unless you're tryin to. the max # is 1,024,000 so i doubt many ppl will hafta shorten their posts cause they went over the limit laugh.gif

q: how do i pm ppl?
a: you can either go to 'my controls' then 'inbox' then 'send pm' or you can click on someone's name on the forum and either pm or e-mail them

ok so how do i post in white like some have done?

Posted by: gerbilfromhell Apr 23 2003, 10:54 AM

q: how do i change the colors to one of the new colors not in the list?
a: first, highlight the word/phrase you want to change and pick a color. it doesn't matter which color, jus pick one. then, change the name of the color in the brackets (somethin like [color=red]) to [color=white] or whatever by deleting the old name and typin in the new one

I post on another Invision board which is a parallel universe to this, and it doesn't have it. Intruiging!

Posted by: saucy_tara Dec 19 2003, 12:44 PM

It there because if anyone is particularly naughty we Moderators can raise the warn level. It goes up in increments of ten percent so one warn would raise the level to 10%, two to 20% and so on. It's a bit like 3 strikes and your out kinda thing, but if you are ever warned one of us will PM you to tell you why, and how it affects your status on the forum smile.gif

I'm not even a n00b on here anymore... and I don't know the answer to that question still... lol

Posted by: acidteardrop Jan 8 2004, 11:16 PM

they won't tell. IRC is exclusive, but for a reason. They could tell you a lot better than I, but before, when IRC opened it's gates to all, they had some _really_ bad experiences with people saying things...that shouldn't be said to say the least. They won't tell you the IRC room, so don't bother asking.

I do, however, know what server it is.

Posted by: MrTeapot Jan 8 2004, 11:18 PM

Ah okay. So I assume you get told when you are a full time formite?

Posted by: acidteardrop Jan 8 2004, 11:21 PM

no, not even then. chances are you will never be told, they still haven't told me, and I've given up waiting for them to. If they decide to accept me (which they never will) then I think they'll allow me in, but otherwise no.

Posted by: MrTeapot Jan 8 2004, 11:22 PM

Ah alright then, I'll give up now. It just seemed that thats where the best laughs were to be had judging from topics and posts about it.

Posted by: leopold Jan 9 2004, 09:45 AM

The IRC room that was set up was originally done by a chap who used to post here regularly, then it was set up on IRC, then it got moved to Yahoo, then back to IRC again after Yahoo proved how sucky it was by not letting people join the room. After that, we had a couple of people wading in and causing all sorts of stress, which caused Debaser to set up a room properly with all sorts of goodies to stop it being such a stress for everyone.

It does seem to be extraordinarily difficult for newer people to get access to it these days, which I think is kinda sad - the bad apples have spoiled the experience for everyone (myself included, cos I'd have liked new people to chat with as well.)

You guys can always set up another chat room of some sort, so ya can all talk to each other.

Posted by: MrTeapot Jan 9 2004, 10:53 AM

Excellent idea. I'll set up a poll and see what people think. Then if all goes well I can just set up a quakenet room.

Posted by: Marsyas Feb 26 2004, 02:46 PM

I've been wondering this forever, because even though I work at another IPB forum, I never bothered to figure this one out:

I've seen a lot of people with scrolling sigs, both vertically and horizonatally. How do you do that?
Can't believe I never bothrered to ask.... unsure.gif

Posted by: sammi Mar 8 2004, 03:16 AM

I used something called a marquee. If you go to Lissaexplains.com, and then go under the section "fun stuff" ( beware - you may go blind from all the bright extreme neon-ish colors in there, so grab some sunglasses... laugh.gif ) there's a whole section on how to do them. She can probably explain them better than I ever could. happy.gif;;

How do you get the "from" stuff under your name? From: far away and the like. I've looked all over my controls, but it's hiding. And what post number do you have to have to customize your member level??

Posted by: silvermoon Aug 24 2005, 03:23 AM

You don't need many posts for a custom member title. I believe the current number is 10 or something around there. As for your other question, I'm not quite sure what you're asking about. If it's location, that's under My Controls > Personal Profile > Edit Personal Profile. It should be about the 8th thing down. Hope that helps!

Posted by: Astarael Aug 24 2005, 11:27 PM

Thanks for the info, all of it wroked. I guess I was scrolling around too fast on my profile and missed the location bar. My profile is nice now, so thanks!

How many posts until we can start own threads? I'm dying to make a comment :/

Thanks for the help, btw ^^

You can start your own threads right away.
*

I thought you couldn't since Mata put in place the Established Members bit. He was trying to let noobs participate in already started threads before making their own.

I think it's somewhere about 20 posts before you can start a thread, but I'm not completely sure.

Posted by: Astarael Jan 9 2006, 01:07 AM

I'm pretty sure that you can start threads right away in Introductions, Personal Concerns, and Creations, but you have to wait until... maybe 20 or 25 posts before you can start threads anywhere else.

Thanks. It was something concerning the animations, but I squeezed it inside the "suggestions" topic, since it was borderlining the subject.

OH! I forgot all about the Established Members thing. That was pretty recent. I think Ast is right about the forums you can post new topics in, and the basic number when you can start doing that. Glad you got to post your comment.

It's 40 posts, and I'm about to make a new thread about it in here.

Tall Kid: You'd be better off asking about this in the http://www.matazone.co.uk/forums/index.php?showforum=18 forum.

For now though, I'd say that a good diet and regular exercise is the only healthy way to lose weight.

Yeah i agree, if you start doing a little exercise every day you will notice a big difference eg walking to school and back.
But should you really be losing weight for this girl? Surely if she liked you she would go out with you whatever you looked like. Sounds a tad superficial to me.

1) Is this forum very active at all? Like lets say I make an interesting and thought provoking thread, how many replies would I get in one day?

2)(curious) Are most people on this forum european?

P.S. I'm loving Mr. Snaffleburger.

Posted by: CheeseMoose Jun 26 2007, 04:49 PM

Hi there

Depending on the subject of your thread, it may well get half a dozen replies in one day, significantly more if there are two or more people online who disagree about your topic.

And probably the biggest nationality on here is British, followed by American, and a scattering of others. No regular Aussie posters though, which I've always thought was a bit odd.

However, even if you're looking for more replies than that, please don't deprive us of your interesting and thought-provoking thread. There are some very intelligent and articulate people on here who would love to discuss it, whatever the subject is.

Posted by: vanfullofretards Jun 27 2007, 09:47 PM

Thank you for the response.

Posted by: Mata Jun 28 2007, 12:05 AM

We do have at least one regular Australian member that I can think of. We have a few different nationalities, but the regular posting members are usually from the UK and the US. I'm not sure what the balance is precisely, but, like CM says, I'm fairly sure the UK is more heavily represented.

As for 'active': yes, the forums do have regular posts, and it seems to be picking up again lately. Really it depends on what's happening in the world or our lives. Naturally, if a topic is started in a way that prompts discussion then it will get more responses than one that doesn't. For example: 'my dog is great' wouldn't get much feedback, 'I love my dog, and he always likes drying himself on the sofa after it rains. Does anyone else have a dog with an annoying/cute habit?' would get a lot more.

Welcome to my forums!

I have found a way for people to get any colour writing you can possibly have. First you have to get the HTML cade of the colour you want and then instead of typing a colour use the HTML. Example:

Text Coulour Test

There are many ways to get HTML codes for colours, such as looking at their properties, and also on some website and programs it will give you the 6 digited code when you are selecting a colour.

You maaaaaaaaaaaaaaay want to check your html, love, 'cause it's not coming through.

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 16 2007, 10:25 AM

While this is probably hardly news to any of the more experienced internet-type people, it is true.

It doesn't work with every single colour you can find a hexadecimal code for, there used to be a thread about this actually, finding a weird hex-code and giving the colour a suitable name... we were easily amused.

If you want a guide, http://www.free-webmaster-tools.com/colorpicker.htm.

Posted by: -TheKasbah- Sep 16 2007, 02:05 PM

I think if you look closely, it did work actually. Just by typing a random 6 digit code rather than a colour.

Plus I know it isn't a surprise to explerienced people, it's for noobs, if the know how to use the html.

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 16 2007, 02:14 PM

Good point, just two thinks. Firstly, it's not html, secondly, it hadn't worked because I checked the post and there was no hex-code, you'd written descriptive words in the colour field.

Posted by: -TheKasbah- Sep 16 2007, 02:24 PM

I know, I changed it because you couldn't see it without looking to see the code, because I put discriptive words instead it didn't change the colour and you couldn't see what I was trying to show.

I couldn't be bothered explaining it, but it is HTML. If it wasn't then it would just show the code you tried to put in instead of changing the colour.

Posted by: moop Sep 16 2007, 03:25 PM

Nah, it's BBCode. The forum doesn't allow you to use actual HTML.

Or, you know, you could try either contributing to the thread or *gasp* ignoring it.

What a concept rolleyes.gif

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 25 2007, 10:09 PM

If the thread's dead there's nothing to contribute, if it get's ignored it'll keep happening. I don't see how that's preferable.

Posted by: SPEAKERfortheLOST Sep 25 2007, 10:20 PM

I have to admit... SPS is right. If it is ignored it will fester and grow, better to get it now than let that happen...

Threads don't die if people have things to contribute. that's the point. If they were spamming it, fine, but they had valid opinions on the subject.

And if it really bothers you that much, you can post in a "live" thread.

Not to mention the fact that the Noob thread should never "die," considering we get more members each day.

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 26 2007, 12:44 AM

This wasn't the thread I was referring to, it's pinned so it doesn't die, which is why I posted here. Perhaps you could've followed the three links cunningly hidden with in my post? You quoted it, you must've seen them.

I did see them, but my original point still stands.

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 26 2007, 12:13 PM

Okay kids, let's bury our heads in the sand, let the random people spam the forums we know and love.

Psst... don't speak your mind, it's not allowed

Posted by: Radaga Oct 1 2007, 01:57 PM

some times necroposting is not a bad thing. Think of a novice who looks around, and finds an old, but interesting topic, and reads it, and have a different view, should he not be allowed to express his opinion based solely in the fact that it have been dead for a while?

Im my forums we admins necropost intentionally some posts when we see a significant number of new people have joined in the forum, so they can see what already have been discussed.
