The Other Side forums - suitable for mature readers! _ Daily life _ Amazon Stuff

Posted by: Mata Apr 7 2005, 02:23 PM

As some of you have probably noticed, at the moment I'm trying various ways of making this site profitable while not costing my visitors anything. Think of it as a way of screwing money out of the people that charge too much for simple things anyway.

In that line of thinking, I'm now an associate with Amazon. The media industry likes to overprice things if you ask me, but in the end we still want their stuff so we have to bite the bullet.

Anyway, at the bottom of the forum pages and below the animations are now search boxes for Amazon. There's .com on the left and .co.uk on the right (if there's a big demand for anywhere else, such as from someone in Australia who uses Amazon lots then let me know). When you buy something after using one of those links then a few percent goes to me.

You don't pay anymore for things that you'd probably buy anyway, and I get to take money away from Amazon. Everyone's a winner!

If you are buying something from Amazon, please remember about this function on my site. I'd really appreciate it, cheers!

You mentioned in the advertising thread about hits on adverts. As I search through Amazon quite a bit I was wondering if I use your link do you get anything for that or is that just wishful thinking?

But for buying books and music, will do.

Posted by: Snugglebum the Destroyer Apr 7 2005, 02:36 PM

See - you should have done this yesterday as I brought a spanking new webcam from Amazon.

*sigh* Suppose I'll just have to go back and shop some more. evil.gif

Posted by: candice Apr 7 2005, 02:43 PM

Aww. Too bad you didn't do this 2 weeks ago. I just bought my textbooks from there. sad.gif But I will remember that this fall when I have to buy books again. smile.gif Although hmm I wonder if you still get money if it's from someone selling a used book on Amazon rather than a book Amazon is providing themselves, new?

As far as I can tell, the session remains active for a day after you use the link to visit the site:

We keep track of the Associates ID as the customer browses through our Web site, and even if they close their browser and come back later that day.

So I'm guessing that you could browse for 23hours 59minutes before making your purchase then my site still gets the commision.

Well, that how I _think_ it works anyway! But yes, it seems fine for you to browse before buying, you don't need to have gone directly to purchasing straight from the search on my site.

EDIT: Damn! I've had the code to do this for a couple of weeks but not had the time and/or have forgotten when I did have the time to do it. Oh well...

Posted by: Jonman Apr 7 2005, 02:57 PM

Ooh. Jedi mind powers. I was just looking at turgid MATLAB books earlier today so that I can actually be able to do my job.

They're flipping expensive like. And I'd echo Cand's question about second hand stuff - Amazon themselves take a percentage of those sales (quite a high one too, let me tell you as someone who offloads their old books on there). I wonder if they'll give part of that away.

Posted by: Mata Apr 7 2005, 03:00 PM

After a bit of Googling, I've seen on another that I do, but no confirmation on Amazon yet...

EDIT: I can't find anything in their T&C saying that they _don't_ so I suspect that I get the same rate for used and new.

Posted by: little_bear Apr 7 2005, 03:30 PM

I think this is pretty cool. It's right at the bottom of the page, so for the most part it's always hidden, plus I do a lot of shopping through Amazon, so this'll be pretty useful should I need it. I like em.

Posted by: Mata Apr 7 2005, 03:42 PM

There were some banners which would have been more prominent and eye-catching, but I'm trying to make these things annoy people as little as possible!

I don't know about other people, but I often use Amazon as a reference point too, so I hope it's quite handy as well as creating a bit of income for the site.

Posted by: Forever Unknown Apr 7 2005, 04:46 PM

Eeeeyyy! I'm an Amazon whore, so I shall definitely be taking advantage of useful linkiness.

Posted by: markslut Apr 7 2005, 07:17 PM

I would but I have my own (esp as I have about 10 days to find new hosting if demand for my site stays this high and the job not looking too rosy) which currently has paid 2GB's excess bandwidth

Posted by: I_am_the_best Apr 7 2005, 09:26 PM

I love having the search boxes at the bottom of the page. You think that it's the bottom, then suddenly there's more! I'm very easily amused. I buy lots of books from Amazon so all is good!

Posted by: JimiJimi Apr 7 2005, 09:41 PM

I didn't realise how much I'd be annoyed by those banners... just looking at them makes me annoyed, but I don't have to scroll down to them! Isn't that just amazing?

Well, no, not really, but I don't have to be annoyed, so... err... I guess this calls for a 'yay'.

Also I do use amazon quite a lot. So, it's all 'yay'.

Posted by: Mata Apr 7 2005, 11:51 PM

Markslut: Talk to my hosts, http://www.steadfastnetworks.com/ they're a huge amount cheaper than UK hosts, with a nice lot of bandwidth. I've got a custom package because I use so much, but their best off-the-shelf one is £80 for a year with 150GB per month transfer. Their hosting has been damn near rock solid too. They're one of the best hosts I've been with, and the price is great.

I_am_the_best: Glad you like them!

Jimi: sorry you don't like them!

These are about as unintrusive as I could make them. I didn't have to put them on the forums, but I figure that the amount of regulars on here mean that there's got to be people popping on and then going shopping. If I didn't have the links on the pages then it would be easy to forget about them being below the animations. I did try to work out how to have them in my sig, but it was refusing to let me do that.

I quite like them actually plus Sues is constantly asking me to check things on amazon while I'm browsing around on here, so this will make it nice and easy to do.

Sadly Jimi, if you find these intrusive then you really won't like the proper banners when they kick in. That's probably going to be in a couple of weeks time (I think). To get a decent amount per-click for the banners then they will have to be at the top of the page. The amazon thing I figure is actually quite handy, but it will take a lot of people spending money with amazon to make much of a difference at my end I think, so it's really just an idea to see how it goes and if people like them being there. I hope it will do well, but I'm not holding my breath!

When the real banners come in it will be best to think of them in terms of donating to my site. If everyone who visited my site everday clicked on a banner then I would get around £30,000 per month. That's a lot of people. Currently the donations are... Well, lets just say that there are a few individuals who have been doing more than their fair share! I certainly wouldn't want them to be taking the burden for everyone else, but in the end I do need to make money and banners are a good way to do it.

It's possible that I might get around 1% of visitors clicking, and that would be very useful in helping me pay the rent!

Posted by: MrTeapot Apr 8 2005, 12:08 AM

To get my favourite webcomics to a better standing in the comic ranks I tended to go around all the computers in my IT room (scrambled ip numbers) and vote around 15-20 times each go.

Perhaps this tactic can be repeated for the Mata Money Drive. You'll be a millionaire in a week.

Posted by: Mata Apr 8 2005, 12:50 AM

That really would be lovely. *dreams of paying thousands of monkeys to randomly type until they produce my thesis for me*

Posted by: Righteous Apr 8 2005, 01:59 AM

As I've said, I don't pay Mata's bills, so it isn't my call. However, I'd like to point out that their location is rather out-of-the-way and it's Amazon so chances are at least a few of us will actually use them.

If I ever want to buy anything from Amazon, I'll be sure to do it through here.

Posted by: beleraphon Apr 8 2005, 07:41 AM

Well, I buy music via a portal to MNS on somone elses site, so I'll buy books and dvd's via the amazon portal here.
Doesn't bother me at all and if it helps then great!

I thought that was for the swinging of the swords. *shrugs*

Anywho, the Amazon thing is fine. I don't have to pay the bills for this very large site, I don't have to look at it if I don't want to and it just seems like the most practical thing to do.

Also, I buy things from Amazon a few times a year...

Posted by: Mata Apr 8 2005, 02:45 PM

Actually, the bills for the site have now been covered by some of the regulars on here in their donations over the last couple of months, for which I am very grateful. This is now to help me pay the rent and buy food! ... Actually, the tax year has just ended, so I need to find money to pay my accountant, so some money will be going towards that.

On an old website of mine I had an associates program with Amazon. I believe that the percentage commission you get varies on how that person made the purchase:

You get the highest % if you link to the exact item that they buy. A lot of sites have people going, "This CD is really cool... click here to buy it on Amazon." And should they do so, you get £££. Then, if they have searched for the item via your page, I believe you get a slightly lesser amount. Finally, if they link to Amazon via your page, you get the lowest amount.

You can also set up a recommendations page which you link to, upon which you push people in the direction of certain items. I believe this gives you a similar commission level as a direct item link.

As for second-hand items, sold through Amazon's ebay-esque private-sale system: I am fairly certain you don't get anything on this. Also, you dont receive a % on some Amazon items - I think this includes the electronics/hardware departments. Plus, if a buyer returns his/her item for a refund, your commission is taken back. There are some other bits and pieces too, which my memory fails to remember.

Essentially though, Mata... if you want to earn the highest %, you should set up a page where you recommend books, DVDs, CDs, etc. with links to their pages on Amazon.

Posted by: MrTeapot Apr 11 2005, 08:17 PM

Perhaps some of the recommendations in the Media threads could do the work for you. All this "best of" this and "greatest X to" that.

Posted by: Mata Apr 12 2005, 12:11 AM

I've considered making a page like this just because I quite like the idea, but, from what I can tell from the literature, there's a standard rate that increases the more items I sell. It may be that they've simplified the system since then.

Posted by: Hobbes Apr 12 2005, 05:39 PM

My old associate account is still active. And it still holds the £3.21 I 'earned'.

Posted by: MistressAlti Apr 12 2005, 06:14 PM

Is there any reason that I *wouldn't* see the amazon toolbar/ad at the bottom of the forums?

I never see it on mine, but I checked the forums without logging in from a different computer and saw them. Why does this happen?

Posted by: CommieBastard Apr 12 2005, 06:33 PM

I don't like new stuff, but once I get used to it it's not so bad, I think they're OK now, and fortunately I buy stuff quite often from Amazon if it's not on eBay...

So, those new banners which are going in soon I'm sure I'll get used to!

I think so. I meant hardware electronics, rather than software. i.e. you don't get anything if someone buys an iPod. Having said that, from Mata it sounds like the rules have changed, so it may well be different now.

Posted by: CommieBastard Apr 12 2005, 09:16 PM

I think I might know what's causing that. Down the bottom of the page, are you using one of the 'pre-2.0' skins? Try putting it on the default one.

EDIT: I've checked and I do get the same percentage on 'third-party' sales, so I guess that's second-hand stuff, and from the US site I get that on the first $25 of electronics hardware. The UK doesn't say anything about money on hardware as far as I can see, but I assume it's probably a similar arrangement.

Aha! That'll do nicely!

Posted by: Mata Apr 13 2005, 03:36 PM

I might do a bit of database wrangling at some point and turn everyone's forum skin over onto being the default one. Pixiegoth was having a problem where the 'subscribe to this topic' box thingy was always selected, and I eventually tracked that down to the skin as well. It might be easiest to just swap everyone's over.

oo Ad's

Please mata. I beg you no noisy adverts, especially for mobile ringtones featuring a frog

Posted by: Mata Apr 14 2005, 11:35 PM

I have requested that I don't get any ads from spawn-of-Satan-Jamster, but I don't have full control over what I get. My requests were 'no adult sites and not bloody annoying Jamster'.

Who is more annoying: the frog or the chick? Either way, I hate them both.

I generally hate mobile phones, so having a discreet and easily ignorable advert for them at the top of the page is quite funny really. I get to ignore them and take their money. Hurrah!

Posted by: Snugglebum the Destroyer Apr 14 2005, 11:41 PM

how do you feel about "the party bee".... I find him maxi big cute

Posted by: Mata Apr 15 2005, 03:30 PM

I've not seen or heard that one yet, and frankly I'm quite happy about this situation...

Okay, the banners are up in the places that they're going to stay. I initially wasn't going to put up skyscraper ones next to the animations, but they are worth considerably more than the normal banners and they double the income for the page, so I figured I would be very stupid not to do it.

I find it quite odd that my site might actually make me a profit in the next few months! It'll take about two months, possibly a little bit more, before the income from this reaches me, but if it does net a reasonable amount then I'll be taking down the donations page. I'm not going to ask for money if I've already got a reasonable income from the site!

Posted by: Mata Apr 17 2005, 04:17 PM

Posted by: Mata May 10 2005, 05:50 PM

Could people occasionally click the banners then wait for the ad-page to load please? It makes my site look better in the eyes of advertisers if you do.

So far today there have been about 5000 views of the small banners at the top of the screen and four clicks. Obviously I'd like to improve this ratio!

Thanks!

Posted by: snoo May 10 2005, 06:34 PM

Posted by: moop May 10 2005, 08:04 PM

I clicked, though I didn't really want to go to Sardinia, tongue.gif much less on easyJet since I always seem to catch something from their utter lack of air filtering.

Posted by: Mata May 11 2005, 12:33 AM

ohmy.gif That worked... My usual number of clicks on the banners at the top of the page is between six and ten, and in the few hours that I've been at the pub it leapt up to 68!!! So yesterday clocked in at that.

The skyscraper ones beside the animations reflect a more normal number for the day, which was '9'. If anyone fancies popping over to the main site ( http://www.matazone.co.uk ) and clicking the big banners beside animations and menus then that would be good too.

Thanks everyone, keep it up!

Posted by: Tenacious C May 11 2005, 07:02 PM

Do we HAVE to "buy" the stuff on those ads? Because I buy other things on Amazon frequently. I wish I came back to the forums to see this earlier...I just bought $150 worth of stuff on there! But it was a dress and jewelry, and I don't think that would count towards your ad clicks...would it?

edit: Whoa now, nevermind. I searched stuff on that bar and I bought 2 video games. So you'll get whatever percentage of $50US. >_>

Piffle. Easyjet aircraft have the same 'air filters' as any other aircraft. AC Packs are part of the standard aircraft fit.

That said, they may turn one of them off to reduce the bleed load applied to the engines (or simply dial down the pack flow demands), and thereby saving some fuel. But that just means you'll get less air blasting into the cabin, rather than unfiltered or 'dirty' air.

The problem is probably more to do with the class of customer that flies Easyjet. Disease-ridden peasants the lot of them.

Flown easyjet 3 times, got ill (quite badly 2 of those times) immediately after each time.

2 out of three is hardly conclusive statisitcal proof.
For instance, I've flown Easyjet once, and I didn't get sick. Therefore, they have a 100% non-sick-making record. They must have special anti-microbial seats that protect the sitter from bacteria.

Posted by: Pab May 17 2005, 12:29 PM

Well of course!

I bet nuclear waste reprocessing plants would pay people to take them off their hands, no wonder budget airlines can operate with such low prices. And those phospholipid bilayers - so soft and comfortable. It's almost as if the seat moulds around you and absorbs you completely. Ohcrapohcrapohcrap! get me out! The seat! It's eating me!

Well, the good news is that from last month the banners have earnt enough money to pay one third of my rent, which is not to be sniffed at. The bad news is that £100 of this came from the UK adverts, and the company doesn't want to advertise on here any more.

Apparently I had around 150,000 impressions of the banners from the UK last month, and the company won't advertise on anyone getting less than 250,000 views from the UK. This is a major bummer. The US companies pay around a third-to-a-quarter of what the UK companies pay. This is bad news in two respects. Firstly, because I'm going to lose what wasn't a huge amount of money to start off with but that I do rather desperately need. Secondly, I'm going to have to go across to using a different advertising company the UK banners to try and get at least some money from them.

The second bit here is the one that is the worst in some respects, because it means that there will be lower-grade advertisers on here, with annoying banners that I will probably be continually trying to block.

The solution is fairly simple: if I can increase the hits on the site to one million globally per month (currently it's in the region of around 300-400k) then I can go back to having the nice banners, because the usual rate of hits for the UK is around 30%. Putting this solution in place is rather more tricky.

I'm working on a new Little Goth Girl animation at the moment. Once that's done I'm going to probably make a game, because they get lots of hits. As always, if you fancy plugging my website on other boards that would be appreciated.

'Just thought I'd let you know what's been happening.

Posted by: Mata Jun 9 2005, 06:04 PM

Some good news.

Because the clicks rate is good they've decided not to withdraw support for my site after all for another month. Yay! biggrin.gif

This means that clicking the banners really is helping keep my site online. Don't go crazy for it, but please do click the banners every day or two because I really do need the money!

Posted by: Pab Jun 27 2005, 04:15 PM

Oy Mata!

This is surely the wrong thread, but over here in the Pyrenees I get hit with US banners on here. So for you, my friend, 2 options:

A. Come up with Catalan advertising
B. Tell them where Andorra is.

The first option is MUCH MUCH easier ...

Posted by: Mata Jun 28 2005, 11:23 AM

There are standard global advertising banners for countries without targetted advertising. Apparently US companies don't mind advertising to the world because they think that you're all interested in their stuff. It's a bit arrogant of them, but if they have to pay to support their arrogance then that's fine by me.

Is there much call for Catalan advertising?

On here? ... well, let me see ... ermmm ... No. None at all. At worst, we can now say we have discussed the possibilities of advertising to catalans on Matazone. Most sites haven't even got that far!

Posted by: Mata Jun 28 2005, 12:02 PM

In fairness, most site admins probably aren't even aware that Andorra exists.

Yup. We would have been "going back to the bible on this one*". Luckily our pious plans have been thwarted by unfortunate meteorology and a planned trip to get my hair cut. Just as well, as any plan with that driving force behind it is abviously going to be a bigotted and moronic enterprise of the first order, including personal profit, and much blood and tears.

I bought 3 items, but I bought them all together to get the free postage, so I don't know if you're getting royalties for all three things? *shrug*

Posted by: Mata Oct 2 2005, 04:52 PM

Yep, I get money for anything that you put in your shopping basket in a session started from the search box on my forums that you then purchase inside of a month. I don't get to see who has bought the items, but I do get to see what has been purchased. It appears that someone is very keen on healthy eating books. I've had quite a few sales of that kind of thing.

If I may say so, the GNER ads are very annoying.. and don't interest me as I live at the other end of the Country (instead having to deal with Virgin quoting £150+ for trips to the north

Ah, well I'm not going to complain about advertisers on the grounds of naff design. Scarily, I quite like the design of the MSN ones. They're quite cute and a lot nicer than the Sky ones.

Posted by: Mata Nov 13 2006, 12:38 PM

*bump*

It's that time of year again!

If you're doing your Christmas shopping on Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com please try and remember to use the search boxes below (or one of the links from my webcomic or blog) to start your trip and this site gets around 5% of what you spend, at no additional cost to yourself.

The last year's Amazon vouchers were used to buy a lovely graphics tablet, which has speeded up the production time and art quality on in my webcomics and made many of the processes of animation a huge amount faster. Thanks everyone, and keep it up!

If you can cajole your relatives into starting their trips using the search boxes too, then all the better wink.gif

In case anyone's wondering: I don't know who buys what, or even what country it is being shipped to, but I do get to see a list of what has been purchased. I get no personal details whatsoever, and I have no way of connecting people to their purchases. Your identity is completely hidden from me at all times... But if you do fancy saying what you've bought, then I always like chatting about books and films!

My top tip this year for people who like action films is 'District 13', known as 'District B13' in the US. More about that here: http://comic.matazone.co.uk/2006/10/23/pure-evil/

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Nov 13 2006, 01:07 PM

I bought Nightfall Collectors Edition a little while ago, should be a nice £2 for you, it should have been £2.50, but amazon knocked £10 off the RRP...

Posted by: Mata Nov 13 2006, 01:22 PM

I knew that had to be one of the forum people! biggrin.gif Cheers Pat!

Posted by: LoLo Nov 13 2006, 02:51 PM

I actually ordered a couple of CDs this weekend using the search box...Stone Sour and Moloko

Posted by: Mata Nov 15 2006, 12:02 PM

Ah yes, they've turned up on the list now. Thanks!

As an experiment, in the forums and below Trouble Down Pit I'm going to put 'optimised' links for the pages. Let me know if you find these too annoying and I'll change them back. I think it could be quite interesting to see what they show!

Posted by: snoo Nov 15 2006, 01:08 PM

I prefer the search funtion, although it's good that they give you ideas of what to buy I normally know what I want and it's faster to just type it in and buy it than have to click on something then do a search... maybe I'm just lazy? tongue.gif

Posted by: Mata Nov 15 2006, 01:13 PM

I'm finding the suggestions quite interesting, but does anyone else feel like Snoo on this one?

Oh, and I'm trying to work out how to change the background so it's not all stripey...

EDIT: Nope, I can't seem to work that one out. I'd made a nice background 'n' ev'ryfink!

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Nov 18 2006, 01:25 PM

I would say the stripey bits at the top and the bottom to make it look a little tacked on, but it's not something I imagine anyone spending a whole helluva long time looking at so it's not really an issue...

Posted by: Mata Nov 19 2006, 02:19 PM

Yeah, the top isn't too bad, but it looks a bit weird at the bottom. Sorry I can't seem to work out how to change it. I've tried doing it through CSS and with HTML and I can't make it happen. I might have another go later in the week.

Personally, I'm really enjoying the ads at the bottom of the page. I'm always interested in seeing what the Amazon bot has decided might be relevant.

I should also mention that as well as the curiosity about what it would suggest, things that are bought after using the bot suggestions as the initial link add a few more percent onto the associate commision, which is very handy!

Posted by: snoo Nov 20 2006, 11:28 AM

It's trying to sell me Norton Antivirus and A "How to pass your driving test" thing o.O

If you get more comission from them then that's cool and I understand you wanting them instead of the searches. When I posted here last time I had come specifically to use the search box to buy something, something that I am now going to go and pimp out in media in the hope that it comes up in the suggestions... then I'll take it as a sign I was meant to buy it rather than the whim I would have bought it on last week.

Posted by: LoLo Nov 25 2006, 02:11 PM

I swear amazon.co.uk suggests better stuff for me to buy than amazon.com

Posted by: I_am_the_best Nov 30 2006, 09:32 PM

I like the beheading biggrin.gif. But it's not all gut 'n' gore, honest. There is some nifty pakour (free-running) and *daydreams* David Belle topless.

Posted by: Mata Dec 3 2006, 07:06 PM

There's no associate package for eBay, but it would be quite fun to have that on here. In the meantime, they advertise down the side of the page quite a bit. Incidentally, the new advertising package that I'm on means that about 2/3s of the advertisers pay per-click rather than by page views, so don't get carried away (or I'll get my site banned from the package) but occasional clicks for things you're interested in wouldn't go amiss smile.gif

How are people finding the Amazon suggested items boxes? I could narrow down the linked items to CDs, DVDs, and games, but I'm rather enjoying the eclectic selection of stuff that's offered. After December 31st the suggested-items link bonus disappears so there won't be any benefit to the 'suggested' boxes over the old search boxes - which do people prefer? In January I could swap back to the search boxes if people like them more, or I could leave things as they are. I need feedback here! You're the people who use this site, so let me know what you think!

Pesonally, I find the suggested links quite interesting, but I'm fine with changing back to the search boxes if there's a majority who prefer them instead.

Posted by: Mata Nov 16 2007, 10:53 AM

I thought that, in the time approaching Christmas, this could do with being bumped.

For those who don't know, the gist is that if you are shopping on Amazon.com or .co.uk then if you start you trip with any of the Amazon links below my animations/comic strip, or using the search boxes at the bottom of the pages on these forums, then this site gets 5% of what you spend. This helps cover nasty stuff like hosting charges and keeps it all online and everyone happy.

The Amazon serach boxes were tucked away on an old page layout which doesn't quite work with the more recent software, but it's good enough I guess. I've swapped everyone onto it, so you should all see the boxes again now. Can someone confirm that for me please?

I really should try and update one of the more recent ones...

Hmm. The boxes show on the home page, but nowhere else. Still, I've got them at the forefront of my mind for my next Amazon jaunt - which, I will confess, tends to be frequent, if fairly low-priced. I could soon be earning you several pence!

Made a few purchases today, but mostly fairly low-hitters on the expense stakes.

Hmm... I might have to spend a bit of time hacking around in the skin files to see if I can work out what's going on.

Could you tell me what skin it says you're using? It should be in a box on the left under these posts. The IPB Default Skin has my modifications in it, and I tried to switch everyone over to that... But that might not have worked.

InKy, even regular pennies mount up after a while!

"IPB 2.2.0 Default" is what mine says.

Also I don't see them either, but did see them when I was looking at trouble down pit when I was reading that earlier in the day.

I must admit sadly that I too had forgotten to search for my things on here too. *hangs head* I usually spend enough to get free shipping too, so that should add up to a bit.

Distorts the page a little, but still very useable (and I've just made a buy!) Do you still get profits if it's through a gift card, Mata?

Posted by: funked)out_frog Jan 4 2009, 12:08 AM

Elphaba, my ones that Mata listed were bought with an Amazon gift certificate thingy.

I't not all funky for me either and has the two search boxes down at the bottom of the thread page for me happy.gif

I think I am using the default skiny thingy. BUT When I initially tried to post this (on Spoon's account) and hit reply I got a 404. I hit back and hit reply again and it got posted. Just throwing it out there >_>

Posted by: Mata Jan 4 2009, 02:42 AM

Okay, so in theory everyone should now be on the default 2.2 skin, and I've removed the side bar for the time being until I can work out how to make that work without the page going screwy on the main forums list.

It looks okay to me. How's it working for everyone else?

Posted by: funked)out_frog Jan 4 2009, 04:32 AM

Posted by: Industrial Kybosh Jan 7 2009, 07:54 AM

Well, the reason the .co.uk list gave me pause to chuckle is that it's all mine. I make quite regular small-fry purchases from Amazon, so this will probably happen a lot. Seriously, though, that threesome was pure me - quirky alternative comedy, gruesome horror and and obscure EP by and obscure band (or, to be more precise, and obscure offshoot of an obscure band - watch me get more pretentious by the minute!).

As it happen, I was listening to Paradise Island and Flight Of The Conchords last night, and am thoroughly chuffed with my purchases. Silent Hill was a preorder, so I'll just have to wait for that one.

Don't get too excited about the pennies mounting up, Mata. 'Getup' will have made you one pence, and that's only if they round up. See what I mean about small fry?

Posted by: leopold Jan 7 2009, 11:13 AM

I was wondering how much indifference you could stand before you had to tell us, Inks. Not very much, is the answer. But possibly more than I could.

Oh, and the purchase list - are you logged on when you access amazon.co.uk perchance? Your purchase list is bound to be everything you bought because you bought it. I didn't buy any of it and, by not being logged on to amazon, I don't even get to see a purchase list. But if I did, it'd be for expensive books about counselling which I got about a year ago for the missus. Sorry Mata, if I'd realised, I could've netted you a few quid there.

Inky, you are currently rated 7 on the pretentiousometer. Your ranking is "Kenneth Branagh".

Posted by: Industrial Kybosh Jan 7 2009, 12:52 PM

Indifference is like water off a duck's back to me. It was boredom at work that prompted me to reveal the gory truth.

Those purchases were a bit of a test run for me, and I was just amused by the fact that I made up the whole of the UK-based list, and also that, upon reading them back, they created a very accurate impression of me as a shopper.

By the way, if you ever compare me to Kenneth Branagh again, I'll pull your teeth out through your arse. I hate that tidy-bearded method-acting f@ck.

Posted by: Mata Jan 7 2009, 01:40 PM

Don't worry about it being pennies InKy - it mounts up eventually, doesn't cost you anything, and it gives us a bit of fun seeing what you've bought.

A few updates... I'll try and keep these weekly, that way I won't get too much overlap:

Oi, don't blame me! That's where you were placed on the IPS (International Pretentiousness Scale). Although your blatant contempt for Il Branagh's acting skills means you can be reclassified as a 6. Although the arse-tooth pulling situation sort of puts me off telling you your ranking ph34r.gif

Scrabble 60th Anniversary Edition

What distinguishes this from all the other editions? Are there new, previously undiscovered letters? Are some letters bigger than others, taking up more squares? Are there crude sexual forfeits in place of the 'Double Word Score' spaces? Or is it just on a fancy-schmancy board, possibly made of ivory and the fingers of peasants?

I will be writing a letter to the IPS henceforthwith. Branagh isn't pretentious. He's just a ladypart.

Hehe I ordered Pushing Daisies and Scrabble... both from .co.uk though!

The 60th anniversary edition was half price and I believe it has ridges to prevent the tiles from sliding around, I just wanted a scrabble board and it was cheap!

The music book was me because no music shops seem to sell any reasonable edition, it's all Schirmer or Edition Peters. Honestly I have no clue what Kalmus is like... but it was ridiculously cheap for a reason I hopefully won't discover. smile.gif

Yeah those were me along with some other stuff up there (I love Ed Wood!)....jeese I've been on a shopping spree. Unfortunately I had to cancel the Buffy order when I realized I didn't have as much money as I thought I did, but I will order them back again after I get paid for a web site I just updated.

Can you get paid for them twice if I order then cancel Mata? lol

Posted by: Mata Jan 28 2009, 01:27 PM

Clearly they don't. They should have a healthy fear of me and my cunnning ways. There's a company that I tried to buy some goods from several months ago. I'm finally getting a refund. They appear to regularly be conning people on the assumption that most people can't be bothered to go through the hassle of getting their money back or taking the company to court. They don't know who they were screwing with, because I'm now going to see if I can get their online transaction facilities withdrawn. ph34r.gif

Mwahahaha! Good luck with that, Mata. I pity the fools.

Posted by: leopold Jan 28 2009, 03:22 PM

Is getting a refund enough? Hell no! You get them brought down, just for the insult!

Posted by: Mata Jan 28 2009, 11:32 PM

Well, inest.co.uk they didn't respond to emails, their address and phone numbers had changed from the ones listed on their website. I had to trick them into phoning me to get their number (pretending that I was a new customer who wanted to pay by phone) then their phone message system is constantly full. They get a land line, and then that is constantly going to an incorrectly set up message system so you can't even leave a message. I then finally get to talk to the manager (it's amazing what you can get if you say 'if I don't hear from him by 10pm tonight then I'm taking the company to court') who assures me that it's all a mistake and that he refund will be with me in days. I then don't get the refund, have to phone fifteen times in a row (hanging up after the fifth ring to stop going to the answer machine that won't take messages), and finally I had confirmation today that I do actually have a refund on the way.

Yep. It's a bit more than them being rubbish, they really have deliberately made it as hard as possible for me to get through to them in the hope that I'll go away. For every person like me there will be a half-dozen more that would have given up, so being fined by a small-claims court still leaves them in profit. I think I'll just make sure that http://www.inest.co.uk (who are crooks, con men, con artists, scammers) have as hard a time as possible getting anyone to process transactions for them. Did I mention that the website of these swindlers is http://www.inest.co.uk ? Yep, the conmen at http://www.inest.co.uk really shouldn't be trusted, and I'd be very happy indeed if http://www.inest.co.uk went out of business because they're a bunch of theives.

It may not have been http://www.inest.co.uk, but some group with a similar name to http://www.inest.co.uk, but not http://www.inest.co.uk. Though http://www.inest.co.uk is a fairly memorable name. They were forced to update their contact details on their site after I complained so much about inest.co.uk . Previous to my long series of complaints to their transaction provider they didn't have the correct details listed on there. I believe the current correct details for http://www.inest.co.uk are as follows:

iNest Ltd
99 Birmingham Road
West Bromwich,
West Midlands,
B70 6PX.

Tel 0121 533 1428
Mob 07984 348 659 (UK T-Mobile)
Fax 0121 601 2646

I have got through on the mobile and telephone number, but I did need to ring many, many, many times before they would answer. Like I say it was around 15 times, maybe more, before they would pick up, and their message boxes were always full, suggesting that they never bother listening to them. Oh, and the manager is called Mr Hussein, but weirdly he never seemed to be in when I called, although he did call me back after I threatened court action... As correctly pointed out above, http://www.inest.co.uk is part of BH Systems Ltd. (who might be writtern as B.H. Systems Ltd, or perhaps B. H. Systems Limited, I guess). I wonder if the 'parent' company is also run by a bunch of swindling conartist crooks?

ohmy.gif

Are you daring to suggest that http://www.inest.co.uk are a bunch of thieving, crooked types who'll take your money but not provide a service? Gosh! That's like suggesting the t'internet is full of other sorts just like http://www.inest.co.uk who will perform the same sort of skullduggery. Nice bit of detective work on http://www.inest.co.uk though, Mata. http://www.inest.co.uk really shouldn't leave false details about how to contact http://www.inest.co.uk as that's just terrible. I mean, what if someone needed to contact http://www.inest.co.uk in an emergency? The consequences for http://www.inest.co.uk would be just awful!

And I do believe that I saw the same article about http://www.inest.co.uk that Inky read. Apparently http://www.inest.co.uk are directly responsible for the credit crunch, for it was http://www.inest.co.uk who went round swindling the poor, unfortunate banks out of some of their millions. And I think the man in charge of http://www.inest.co.uk is married to his own mother. Which is just wrong. Or is that incest? I dunno. Incest, http://www.inest.co.uk... it's close enough.

Do we suspect that the spambots that trawl the tinterwebs have had a big enough hint yet?

Visit http://www.inest.co.uk, for all your getting ripped off needs!

Incidentally, they don't sell anything you can't get just as inexpensively in any large supermarket...

Posted by: Mata Jan 30 2009, 02:02 PM

They had a combo DAB, CD, and cassette player. Usually they don't have the cassette deck, so finding that for a decent price seemed like a good deal. Frankly I should have listened to my inner web-designer which was ringing big warning bells about http://www.inest.co.uk because their design was so shoddy, and they'd even nicked checkout button graphics from Amazon!

A nice bit of Curtis Mayfield there, and I can't wait to see 'I'm a Cyborg'. Possibly my fault...remember I ordered it, then canceled because I didn't have the funds I thought I did. When I first ordered them, each season was $20, then when I was able to re-order they kicked the price up to $32, so I kept checking back to see if the price went back down to a more affordable price.

Yay! Me again. Other than the film (an absolute beaut - not much like Park's vengeance trilogy, more like an surreal Asian comedy take on 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. Until recently it was going for £30 second hand, but a recent reprint chucked it in the £7 margin. Win!), it's all part of my latest stupid idea - to make mix CDs for all of my colleagues before I leave the Phones4u nest on Friday. I realised I needed more soul, so I picked up a bit of Curtis (which happened to come with a bonus CD of his 'Short Eyes' soundtrack - woo!) for some of the classic stuff, and the Vice City soundtrack boxset (which I once owned, but had stolen dry.gif) for the quality cheese.

I now have 20 CDs to make. So far, I've made 12. Halp.

Mata's right about 'Oldboy' by the way. Absolute solid gold classic.

I salute whoever bought Let The Right One In; I've been told it's a good book and it's certainly a very good film, but Mata - please make sure you got the version with the original cinema release subtitles (unless, of course, you're planning on just watching it in original swedish). Some horror movie blog did a side by side comparison of the DVD subtitles and the Theatrical ones, showing how massively dumbed down for DVD it's been.

I should spend more time here; I hadn't noticed this thread's resurgence. The knowledge that I may become part of a game might've been enough to remind me to use the amazon links here on all the stuff I order, but Amazon make it so easy for me to think "hey, I want that!" and then like five seconds later it's ordered.

Books
Where the Hell is Matt?: Dancing Badly Around the World
DVD
Hogfather

I didn't even know that there was a book of Where The Hell Is Matt? Cool!

Mexican Train Dominoes Travel Version

Moebius is a very cool and influential French comic artist, so that sounds good. I've not heard the new Prodigy album yet (Invaders Must Die) but I liked the one track that I've heard from it - it sounds a lot like Jilted Generation, so it's dated but still catchy.

I've got no idea who might have ordered these. They're a bit of an odd bunch!

Don't forget to keep using the links!

Good. The dancing book did go through Mata's site. I wasn't sure if it would. In the third video (dancing with everybody) there's a flash of a Matazonian running in from the left in the Vancouver shot. : )
That was a fun day.

Posted by: Mata May 12 2009, 12:29 PM

I remember you posting the thread when you were going off to dance with him. I didn't remember you mentioning that the video was online. What was he like? He's seems like a very nice chap from the interviews I've seen.

Posted by: Ashbless May 21 2009, 05:46 AM

He seemed like a nice guy in person as well. Very interesting stories told in a matter of fact way. Seemed happy enough to talk to anyone who wanted to chat. Claimed to really like his non-job of traveling.

Forgive me Mata, for I have sinned.

I placed an Amazon order, and forgot about your links.

You'd think that, by now, you would have gotten through to every last cell in my brain that I must go via the links...

I wish to repent

I have bought quite a bit of stuff using the links recently (6 weeks ago) but you don't seem to have mentioned it :S

Being that this is nearly two months, there will be some repeats, but it should cover Snoo's order... So can you guess what she bought?

Now see if you can pick which six were mine. Bonus point if you correctly guess which one seems to have been lost in transit.

Ok Nov, this is my guess.

Let the Right One in

In Bruges [DVD] [2008]
Little Miss Sunshine [DVD] [2006]
Office Space [1999] [DVD]
Snakes on a Plane [DVD] [2006]
The Royal Tenenbaums [DVD] [2002]

I think that In Bruges is the kind of thing that might've gotten lost.

I also ordered Sigur Ros - Von at the same time as the other stuff so seems a bit weird that it's not on the list.

Posted by: Mata May 27 2009, 08:34 PM

'Office Space' is the oldest on there, so that might not have been in stock, so could have ben sent individually and might have gone AWOL.

Mmm, if I'd realised that it was Wes Anderson before the first post I would have gone for it the first time but I couldn't be bothered to check. I'm not 100% sure of my feelings towards his stuff, I think I have to be in the right mood for it!

Posted by: Mata May 31 2009, 10:30 PM

I've seen a couple of his films, and they still don't work for me. I really tried to like them and I feel like I should, but they just don't push my buttons.

I watched Let The Right One In a few nights ago... It's interesting. Definitely a good film, but it's also very Scandinavian so everything takes a very long time to happen, and when it does it's usually quite small. I feel like the story could have been told in half the time. I liked it, and would recommend it, but it's not going to be for everyone.

Posted by: LoLo Jun 2 2009, 01:57 AM

I just had this random thought...Mata if you use the search box to buy something for yourself off of amazon do you get a percentage of that purchase back?

Posted by: Mata Jun 2 2009, 12:44 PM

Nope. They're pretty sharp at that kind of thing. I'm not sure what they're like with people who live at your address ordering stuff, but they can be a bit iffy about it. They also take the money back if a person returns the goods or cancels the order.

Someone clearly likes the Dresden Files. I enjoyed the first few on audio book, and I hear they keep getting better, but I don't know who would be shopping for them.

I'm trying a new linky thing at the bottom of the page because I think the old ones have stopped working. It's supposed to work out what people on this site will like and mak suggestions. I've got it set so that it will open a new window/tab when you click on something so you won't lose your place on the forums. Let me know what you think of it.

Lo: What do you think of the Kindle? I've heard mixed reports - some people love it, others seem to think it's tosh.

Thanks for remembering my links smile.gif

So far I like it, though I haven't had time to actually read more than a few pages of a book on it yet. I'm sure I will tomorrow though. I'll be bringing it with me, so I'll just try and remember to bring it to the meet so you can check it out. It has a read out loud option on it that is kind of interesting, but it sounds like a speak and spell is reading to you. lol

Hmm... I suspect that people in the UK are using the links more often than people in the US!

There are some top choices of books from the UK. It's good to see The House Of Leaves on there, and I'd wondered about The Walking Dead series: are they any good?

Well I know for me personally, I have been slacking on buying things form Amazon, but I've been slacking on buying anything. I should go back to my consumerism some time. laugh.gif

Posted by: snoo Mar 17 2011, 06:09 PM

I think some of those books are mine, not House of Leaves though.

I have basically banned myself from using Amazon at the moment, I went a bit crazy for a while with pre-orders so had to go cold turkey! dry.gif

Posted by: Mata Mar 17 2011, 07:39 PM

Don't let me lead you into the wayward principles of consumerism but, you know, if you are going for consumerism then don't forget your friendly neighbourhood animator/cartoonist/creative bloke smile.gif

Thanks everyone who has remembered the links this holiday. The Brits are definitely winning on this one, with over 50 items compared to 6 form the US.

Something's either messed up with the links or my setup. This year I _definitely_ remembered the link. And I was pretty sure there were a few things last year that I did but it had been a while so I couldn't be certain.

Posted by: mooooooooooopo Dec 20 2011, 09:55 PM

All of the six .com items you listed are Cand and my gifts for her family. >_> There were a few other items we got on Amazon.com which aren't showing up too.

Posted by: Cath Sparrow Dec 21 2011, 02:07 PM

The socks were me (or mum to be more presise)

Posted by: Mata Dec 21 2011, 06:39 PM

I think that's just the list of items from the last month. If you ordered in November then those things probably won't be on there. Thanks for remembering to use the links!

Posted by: Oni Usagi Dec 21 2011, 08:35 PM

That must be it, turns out it was in November. I'm surprised I got it out of the way that quickly.

And naughty you, using range to make uk look better. tongue.gif

Posted by: Mata Dec 22 2011, 08:18 PM

I just picked the first range that seemed to fit. Oops! biggrin.gif
