Ok So I have been going on about having a new tattoo done for ages. I want one done on the small of my back. This morning I was searching for faerie pictures when I cam across
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y245/faerieryn/faeriecloseup.jpg

Not a tattoo I know BUT I was wondering whether any of my artistically inclined matazonian friends could give me a hand making it into a tattooable image.

What I would like is for the faerie to be in abit more detail- namely hair colour and clothing but the essentail shape is exactly what I want. Any takers?

I can have a go for you, but I'm not the world's greatest artist. It might end up a bit stylised, but if you're ok with that, I have 3 friends who will vouch for my tatoo designs tongue.gif

Posted by: elphaba2 Aug 21 2006, 07:47 PM

I have a pair of earrings with that design. It's lovely. I wish I had any talent whatsoever in tattoo design, or else I would draw one up for you, but, well. Hope you can find a nice one--and I'm sure you will with GA drawing one.

thanks guys!!!!!

Just me? blink.gif Eep. Ok - Do you want the celticy knot-type bit in it as well? And where do you see the arm which is behind her going? It's a little difficult to make out.

Posted by: Ashbless Aug 22 2006, 02:49 PM

The tattoo artist him/herself may also be able to help you design it from your necklace. It looks beautiful.

Posted by: Cookieflair Aug 22 2006, 08:13 PM

That is a very nice image. Will people post their efforts? I would love to see.

I'm working on one at the moment too, I'm stuck on the hands and have a headache this evening or I would finish it up.

How's this?

Or maybe a flock of them...

I really should stop encouraging people to get more tattoos than they were planning on... ph34r.gif

Posted by: Faerieryn Aug 23 2006, 04:04 PM

All looking very cool people. Thanks so much. I do want the celticky knot thingy in it too as I was planning a celtic knot before I saw thispicture with a faerie attatched which makes it that much more perfect!!!

My main plan is to get it done on the small of my back so it will be another tatto I can't see without a mirror!!! But it will look so cool

Thanks again!!!

Posted by: Smiler Aug 24 2006, 12:50 PM

I'm lovin' Mata's flock'o'faeries but seriously, more than one FaerieRyn could we cope.

Ryn was going to go or something like a rose in celtic knots before (have a look at the back of and "A Knights Tale Directors Cut" if you have it) this kinda took over from that.

I think my fave so far is the thicker edged wings, although both look great... wonder how long it'll take before I get sick of holding up a mirror???? wink.gif

Posted by: {Gothic Angel} Aug 24 2006, 12:51 PM

I've done you two designs, but unfortunately my scanner is teh broken, so I'll have to either wait until it's fixed or see if I can get someone to scan it in for me. Bear with me a couple more days tongue.gif

Posted by: Stardust_Smile Aug 24 2006, 01:04 PM

I have that necklace!!!! Lovely idea for a design Ryn!

Posted by: Wyvern Aug 31 2006, 05:55 PM

Cool I'll have a doodle and see what I can come up with if anything just to get my drawing eye back in.

Posted by: LoLo Sep 1 2006, 01:59 AM

I had planned on finishing this but the creative bug seemed to go away from me and school starts next week so I'm not sure I'm going to get to finish it. If you want the bigger version for print let me know and I'll e-mail it to you. If I do get to finish it before you make a choice on what you want to use for your tat, I'll post a finished version.

If you take that to a tat artist they should be able to work with it to give it better legs and hands.

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 1 2006, 12:42 PM

Cool Thanks guys!!! The faeries are coming out really nicely. Now my next question is can anyone draw a faerie with the knots either side of it. That would be even better as I am hoping to get something celtic on the base of my spine and this design would fit perfectly.

Thanks!!!

Posted by: Mata Sep 1 2006, 01:00 PM

Is there any particular reason for the celtic knots? There are loads of other cool things out there; how about branches reaching out in the style of chinese plum blossoms?

http://www.angishearstone.com/plum5.html

Or waves in the style of Hokusai?

http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=hokusai

Not that there's anything wrong with celtic work, but there's a whole world of fantastic imagery out there, and it the celtic knotwork doesn't have specific symbolism for you then there are other options you might like to consider.

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 1 2006, 09:10 PM

It was more of a case that the design was already there. I can't draw and having a ready made design made it easier. Also it's very simple and quite pretty.

Posted by: Mata Sep 2 2006, 10:38 PM

Here's a straight copy of the image with the celtic knotwork translated for inking:

Here's with inked scrolling:

How about cherry blossoms?

... Or just have all of the above! (Which I think looks rather cool.)

Incidentally, if you do choose to use any of these designs, get your tattooist to tidy up the lines on the wings. They're fiddly to correct when use free-drawn vectors, but it'll be the work of moments with a pencil!

Posted by: {Gothic Angel} Sep 3 2006, 02:54 PM

I figure you can colour it in how you like (like a colouring book! happy.gif). And there be clothes and things.

Look at the full size one http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/gothicangel665/ScanImage001.jpg for a more detailled and better quality picture. edit: Which is slightly fuzzy now I come to look at it. I could even send you the original, if you want tongue.gif

Posted by: Mata Sep 5 2006, 10:46 PM

Let me know if you need bigger versions. Everything is vector, which means that I can scale up to whatever size you want very easily. I'm glad you like the pics, GA's are cool too smile.gif

Hi all,

I know this topic has been gone for a while now but with rykan posting about her tat I thought I'd bring it up again. I've decided that I want the one mata first put on for me with the knot work sort of design but I would like to put proper butterfly wings onto her. Is there anyone out there in internet land who could help? I've tried adding wings myself but have no art/ computer art skills and need help doing this. My plan is to leave much of the tattoo black and white but have colour on thw wings. Neat huh?

Posted by: monkey_called_narth Mar 3 2007, 09:47 PM

none of these are to brilliant, but i needed somthing to focus on for a while... so here goes.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/commiejerk/fairy34.jpg?t=1172958291

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/commiejerk/fairy23.jpg?t=1172958393

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f46/commiejerk/fairy12.gif?t=1172958418

if you used any of these, you would have to get the lines fixed a bit.

Posted by: Faerieryn Mar 3 2007, 10:17 PM

They are beautiful Narth!! Thank you. I will consult with my sponsor (rumour has it that I may be getting it as part of my birthday pressie and if not well he has to live with it- it'll be on my back so he'll see it more than me!) and let you know if I use them. They are lush!

Posted by: Rykan Mar 16 2007, 04:21 PM

Ah no, I was all set to try and have my go at drawing it ^^' I can try giving Mata's design butterfly wings though :3

Posted by: Faerieryn Mar 19 2007, 07:52 PM

Please do. Really, the more I see the more I can choose from

Posted by: Rykan Mar 21 2007, 03:54 PM

Hokay laugh.gif

Did this one in a vaguely anime style, and

this one in a vaguely more realistic style.

Let me know if you like either one of them, or want any changes or more details (like jewellry) and I'll neaten it up and ink it. Did you want it in colour or black and white shading or just the lines? Oh and did you want her holding the gem or not? And what about nipples >.>

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 1 2007, 12:40 PM

Ok guys. Sorry to keep doing this but I'm determined to have something I really love on my skin.

I've chosen the design

And now I've found some wings. They're the wrong size and probably a touch on the detailed side but these are the sort of thing I would like on the design.

Any ideas?

Posted by: Mata Sep 2 2007, 01:54 PM

How's this?

Posted by: Sir_Psycho_Sexy Sep 2 2007, 02:10 PM

That does look good, but the right arm is a little hidden by the wing. (Not sure why I'm commenting...)

I keep playing with the idea of something on the inside of my wrist, but it makes me cringe at the same time...

I have a tattoo that I designed last year- I was going to wait a while, to make sure I still wanted it before getting it. Turns out, I still really REALLY do, I just have no clue as to where to put it. I want it on the sole of my right foot, but that would be super painful sad.gif

/end self-commentary

I really like those wings too, but perhaps the right hand side arm needs to be slightly bent at the elbow/ at a bigger angle away from the legs.

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 2 2007, 07:24 PM

Mata that is gorgeous!!! Now I just need to add some colour to the wings and then I'll be set!

Not so much I wouldn't have thought, the sole of your foot probably has quite tough skin anyway and not too much in the way of nerve endings. Walking on it while it healed might be an issue, but more in the way of an irritant than actual pain.

Posted by: Forever Unknown Sep 3 2007, 07:58 AM

Tattoos on the feet always fade really quickly, just so you know.

Posted by: Mata Sep 3 2007, 08:23 AM

I bet it would tickle like hell when they were doing it!

Posted by: Daria Sep 3 2007, 10:47 AM

Trouble is, SPS, it'd be on my instep. UBER soft part.
Luckily for me, Mata, I'm not ticklish biggrin.gif (well, except when naked or aroused, but I'm hoping I shall be neither when having the tattoo done).

My problem is that I don't want it to be visable unless I show people, I want it to be somewhere where I can see it and I don't want it on my hips/ tummy. Nor boob.

Especially on the soles of your feet. It likely wouldn't look the same in a few days, much less a few years. The soles are constantly in use, and they get pretty dirty (which means they take longer to heal, and there's a greater risk of infection).

I don't know where else you could get it that would be visible to you, but not to others. Just above your knee? Well, unless you wear shorter dresses a lot.

Posted by: Daria Sep 3 2007, 12:18 PM

/me hijacks Ryn's thread a little more

It would be in red, too. Haha, it would last about two days >_>

I've always thought that my sternum would be a fun place to have it done. But then again, it kind of defeats the point about "having it in a place where I can show others"

*imagines hoiking down top to show people new tattoo, forgetting that yes, boobies are there too*

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 3 2007, 09:48 PM

Perhaps at your hairline? I have always favoured tattoos that been covered when you want to. Hence mine is (and eventually are) on my back

For myself to potentially get. It's so cool you're actually getting it done, Ryn. I thought it had kind of disappeared into the ether biggrin.gif

about Places to Put It--A tattoo's always been in the "eventually" bit of my life (I've got a design, it's a small round submarine that I doodled one day and periodically test out in pen to see if I still like how it looks) and for ages I was so concerned about where it could go where I wouldn't mess up my chances in meeting people. But there are so many respectable and respected people who have visible tattoos that it's no longer a big deal for me. If I ever make it out to (and into) Berkeley, I'm buying a motorbike and getting my submarine on my forearm.

For me, I want it to be hidden for a few reasons:
- My mother. She HATES tattoos and piercings, and when my brother got his done, she cried.
- My granma- same reason, but without the tears
- My job: I'm currently a PA and have to go to meetings with people who I need to respect me from the word go. Unfortunately, if I was to have a tattoo somewhere very visable (no matter what it was), I would be immediately branded as a certain type of person.
- Lastly, my main concern is "what if I don't want to see it in later life?" I know I definitely want this tattoo done, but I am quite fickle with changes in my self,a nd get bored with things quite easily (my hair is only continuously the same colour due to it refusing to absorb temporary dyes).
Yes, my main concerns are about what others would think of me, but I think that it is actually important to have it as a very personal thing. The design means a lot (there is even a poem written about it for me), and I want to have the tattoo in a place where it is hidden, but where I can show people, so that I only share it with those who mean a lot to me and who would understand the thoughts behind it. To me because it is SO symbolic, it kind of feels as though something would somewhat be detracted from the design if everyone and their dog were to see it.

Posted by: Faerieryn Sep 7 2007, 08:15 PM

Between your shoulder blades. Below where most collars come. hat way you would only need to pull your shirt down at the back to show people.

Having a tat on your back may be a buggar for you to see (mirrors are always handy!) but it is less likely to stretch on your back. Even if you put on weight you have to put on masses to make the width of your shoulders increase.

Having it done on your front you risk it stretching through weight gain or (as a girl) childbearing

Posted by: dreamsx Sep 16 2007, 08:18 PM

I wanted to know the same thing, but common sense tells me it depends on the size and colouring, and how long it takes.

Yup! It also depends on the tattooist, 'cause some are a complete rip-off. One of mine is 3x2 inches, just black with shading, and that was 30 from Rob in Winchester, about four years ago. Hopefully that gives some indication.

Posted by: Daria Sep 18 2007, 08:07 PM

Nor do I. Don't actually hate anyone. But every country has to have its Wales- America has Canada, Spain has Portual, France has the whole of Europe. SOMEwhere has to be the butt of all the jokes.

Goodpoint laugh.gif All them places are probably the least recognised places ever, even though Canada is pretty big, but they never seem to do anything. The UK and US are in a really gay and pointless war.Spain is good for holidays, as is France, the rest you named have nothing.

Judging by that, I think mine was a touch on the expensive side, but at the same time I got it in a studio that I knew and trusted, retouch was also free.

Yuppity!!!!! I tried putting those on it but I don't have the computer know how

Posted by: syuu Nov 11 2007, 04:10 AM

that sounds pretty cool.
tattoos are so..so addictive, i'm finding that out. the sad thing is, the prices are starting to really skyrocket - at least here in this city. so far i've only got three, but i'm considering getting some autumn leaves wrapped around one of my arms or something like that.

the sad thing is, even though we've proven tattoos are not for shady heroin addicted characters, they're still mostly unacceptable at work and i hate it a lot. i usually wear a fuzzy black wristband over the stars on my wrist, but recently they've told me to start covering up the little chinese symbol between my thumb and index also. i have to do it with chalk markers, it's crazy! (can't have a bandaid half on while serving coffee, it gives the wrong impression..)

what do you all think about companies and tattoo censorship? the reason i was given was that they don't know where to draw the line - say someone has a naked spread-eagled woman as a visible tattoo, they can't really tell them to cover that up and let someone else have an exposed one.

..personally, i think people should really just stop being so easily offended. meh! but oh well. tongue.gif

edit: now that i've read the whole thread, i'm drooling over this - http://www.angishearstone.com/plum5.html - as a back or shoulder piece. mmm, beautiful.

Posted by: syuu Nov 12 2007, 10:20 PM

you have none? innnteresting - get a mittens and snowball as a tramp stamp, Mata, it'd look hot!

since today's the day of my father's passing, i asked my grandma what his favorite animal was - turns out it's a bloodhound. so now i'm considering getting a bloodhound's face on my ankle and putting 'tony paul' underneath. rule of thumb is that they all mean something, but thus far they're all memorials!

..unless i get the plum tree, which i reallyreallyreally want. really. a lot.

Bloodhound? Hm. They're not exactly renowned for their aesthetic charms. I don't suppose he liked anything else?

I did hear that a couple each got a tattoo done on their ankles, she had Snowdrop and he had Mittens. Unfortunately they split up and she had it covered - I only heard about this afterwards and she doesn't have a photo! Bah!

So far I am uninked. I've not managed to settle on anything that I like for long enough yet, but there is something I've been pondering for a while. Sues is very anti-tattoos, which doesn't exactly speed the process along.

Posted by: syuu Nov 13 2007, 07:42 PM

hmm, that's true - i'm trying to find something of equal symbolism, but i'm not quite sure yet.

awww, who would cover up snowdrop or mittens? still, great idea. maybe i'll get a gigantic mr. snaffleburger on my forehead since he's my favorite. smile.gif

meep. why's she anti-tattoo?

Posted by: Mata Nov 14 2007, 01:22 PM

She just doesn't like them. No-one else in her family has ever had one. Come to think of it, no-one in mine has ever had a tattoo either, as far as I know.

Maybe it's psychology - there's this idea that the male mind is constantly looking for more females to mate with, so a way for women to keep a man is to look different all the time, for example by wearing lots of different outfits. This theory also runs that the reverse is true, that women want their man to be consistent and look the same as much as possible. I know Sues doesn't like me to bleach my hair because when she first got to know me I had black hair and that's how she thinks of me, so maybe there's a similar thing going on with tattoos. I'm really not sure, and I don't think she is either.

Posted by: Daria Nov 15 2007, 10:24 AM

My mother hates the idea of tattoos and piercings so much that she cries whenever we (usually being my dad and I or my brother and I) talk about them. I have my ears pierced only because my dad took me and I promised not to talk to my mum about it afterwards.
I have a tattoo design that I love, and have loved for over a year now. I just need to find a position for it- however silly it sounds, I think I might try it out in different places with a perm marker.

Posted by: elphaba2 Nov 15 2007, 11:01 AM

It does not look silly. Most people find it sensible to try things out first.

No, there's just a scale of rightness:

Ok everyone. I'm bumping this thread because I am determined to get this tattoo done before I get married.

Mata gave me the design

Now i need to think about wing colouring and design. I don't seem to be able to play with the image on my computer so if people are bored and fancy doing something artistic... have a go!

What he said, but also: Bewbs? Am I perv for wanting boobies on a fairy? She seems like a she fairy 'n' all.

Posted by: Industrial Kybosh Dec 29 2008, 09:01 PM

Could be a man fairy. Lack of nips is still a worry, though.

Posted by: Faerieryn Dec 29 2008, 11:06 PM

She is indeed a she faerie. I'm not sure about putting boobs on her. Probably but the lines would have to be quite thin. I'd check with the tattooist. I'm intending for her to done on my lower back just above the trouser line about 10cm across I think, maybe a little smaller depending on cost!

Posted by: Mata Dec 30 2008, 03:27 PM

I think you'd need to have it larger to do it justice, as a personal opinion. I know it costs more, but you'll have it on all your life, so it's worth getting it a reasonable size.

Posted by: funked)out_frog Dec 30 2008, 04:26 PM

I had a try at http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j225/mhariclaire/DSC00614.jpg and am gonna have another few designs now to go do. I have to agree with Mata though, I think 10cm wingspan is rather small, not to even include the patterny bit too. Do you gots any http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehndi you could roughly draw it out with to get an idea how at 10cm it would look. Wing design and or colouring might be finnikier the small it gets and that summit you've got to think about for your tattoo. Also I was thinking about how well the tattooist you are going to can do gradients. Like, each bit of wing pattern could be one colour with each one above it being a slightly different colour/ or noticeable. Or if the change in colour would occur in it. If that makes sense.

Anyways, let me know what you think happy.gif

Ohoh, the drawing on the right is the wing design, and the drawing on the right is me practicing using the chalk pastels (haven't used them much, prefer oil) to go through the colours I could remember from our avatar on a wingish design >_>

Posted by: Faerieryn Dec 30 2008, 10:48 PM

We'll see about size. It all depends on many factors including cash, time, my pain threshold etc. The prettier it is the bigger it will be!

I'm finally getting a tattoo! I've got my appointment booked for Friday afternoon, 5-7pm. I'm getting a decorative swirly thing based on old wrought iron with a cyber-esque hexagonal pattern overlaid on it. It's a bit hard to explain.

I'm getting it on the left side of my torso. I'm told it's going to hurt like a bast*** while it's being done on my ribs! It's going to be pretty big - starting a few inches below my armpit and ending below my waistline.

Naturally, I'm very excited about this, and a little nervous too, all in all though I think it's about time. There will, of course, be photos when it's done, though it might take a couple of sessions so you might get in-progress shots.

Posted by: Cath Jun 15 2010, 05:41 PM

Progress shots would be very cool.

Posted by: Sir Psycho Sexy Jun 15 2010, 05:48 PM

From the sounds of it, you'll definitely be doing that in more than one sitting. While my back piece is pretty big, it is quite simple in terms of shading, and that took over two hours.

That said, I had a different artist doing my re-touch and she went over about 40-50% in under an hour... tongue.gif

Posted by: Mata Jun 16 2010, 01:02 PM

Yes, I think it's going to be 4-5 hours in the end. I might as well start wincing now, just to get some practise in before Friday.

And yes Cath, it can't be worse than the hair, I hope! Except with the hair I had an enormous amount of pain killers during the operation and on hand for the next two weeks. Even so, that was probably the most painful thing I've experienced.

^ Are you sure that's a tattoo design, and not just a portrait of me?

Posted by: Daria Jun 19 2010, 07:16 PM

Yay tattoo!
I've had a design since 2006 that I have really wanted, but have waited for a while to see if I still want it. And I do! And I have eeeeven managed to figure out where I want it (which was one of the main reasons for waiting so long). I want it on my sternum! Although apparently that will really hurt. I figure the tramadol will come in handy.

Posted by: Pikasyuu Jun 19 2010, 09:33 PM

It usually does. I've got two/three tattoos upcoming, two definite, the third fairly optional, and the need to get my stars colored in so that they're all black rather than green and black. The three I'm getting are all very simple and small as far as tattoos are concerned, so the total bill shouldn't be over $150 - all I need now is $150 to spare, and I'll be all inked out. I also need to figure out placement for the one - it'll just be two letters, 'en', which has its meaning and roots in Geisha/Japanese culture and more or less has to do with a karmic bond to another person and, in a way, explains how you sort of just click with someone or have very close, special friends for a lifetime. I'm hovering around the clavicle area, the neck, the ear, or the side of my elbow. Not sure which.

Posted by: Daria Jun 19 2010, 09:37 PM

I like the side of your elbow. As for where the tattoo should go, I've no idea. (ohhh I'm so funny...)

Posted by: CheeseMoose Jun 19 2010, 09:40 PM

Chelsey that is amazing. I kinda want it on me now, but not in a way that would last sitting in a tattoo place with a dude with a needle standing next to me.

Posted by: Mata Jun 19 2010, 11:55 PM

I've only got as far as the first part of the outlines at the moment - that took nearly an hour to do. That's the hexagonal shapes done, so next up will be the swirly shapes in the background, then we can move on to the colouring.

It did hurt, quite a lot in places, but it was bearable too. I'm looking forward to getting it finished. It's probably going to cost something like $1000/700 in the end! Eek!

I'll post a photo as soon as I can. I've not taken one yet.

Posted by: Mata Jun 20 2010, 11:40 AM

Like I say, this is only half the design, thre's lots of swirly stuff in the background to come yet smile.gif

Posted by: Mr Fuzzy Jun 20 2010, 01:02 PM

You've missed the dialling code off.

In seriousness, I like that pretty much as is, bung a few colours in and I'd be sorted. However I trust in your good taste so am looking forward to the swirls.

Posted by: Mata Jun 23 2010, 04:56 PM

I'm booked for another three hours on Friday - we'll be finishing the outline and starting up on the shading. I'm very excited to get it done smile.gif

Posted by: Cath Jun 24 2010, 01:24 AM

I'm guessing a lot less nervous this time as well. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Mata Jun 24 2010, 07:45 AM

Weirdly, when I got in there and was getting the tattoo done I didn't feel at all nervous. That's pretty strange really, considering that I am in the process of getting myself marked for life - even thinking in those terms about it makes me feel odd, but the actuality of getting it done didn't bother me.

I tend to get fairly jittery when I'm getting new piercings (adrenaline), and those can be removed, so really I should be a lot more dubious about a tattoo... Most peculiar.

(I have also used the words: weird, strange, odd, and peculiar in this post. I am a rampaging thesaurus.)

Posted by: Hobbes Jun 24 2010, 12:36 PM

Ah, the wonders of adrenaline. You can work yourself up towards something, with nerves or fear or excitement but, when the pinnacle moment arrives, your body pumps about some wonderful chemicals and suddenly it it's not all as bad as you thought.

...Or else you leg it.

I don't remember how to count so...just post the picture, mata!

Also, a friend of mine (friend is a loose word here, I suppose) recently got a very detailed tatoo of a cross on his shoulder blade. According to him, the outline bit didn't hurt at all, but once they went in to do the shading, he was close to tears. (The idea of which made me smile.)

Any similar experiences for you, sir?

Posted by: Mata Jul 2 2010, 12:45 PM

I'm going for the third session today. This is the first colouring session, so it will be interesting to see how that compares. Both my friends and the tattooist tell me that the outline is more painful, so the odds are that this won't be quite as bad as previous weeks (not that they have been terrible, but it was pretty sore over the lower ribs and on my hip bone).

I found the outlines on mine more painful and the fill kind of tickled.

I had to log into facebook to see the pic, so I'm guessing most non-facebookians would not be able to see it.

Posted by: Mata Jul 3 2010, 08:28 AM

Okay, I'll get a photo on here when I've taken a new one so you all can see.

Yesterday wasn't too bad - the shading hardly hurt at all, but we've only got a few weeks to finish the whole tattoo so she had to go over the shading with the colouring immediately afterwards. She would usually leave several weeks between the shading and colouring, and I can understand why: it was really pretty sore when she was going over areas for the second time, especially on my ribs.

Next Saturday I've got a four hour colouring session and we hope to get all of the blue swirls done in that time. We've started on them this week but there's a lot to go. I think four hours of shading/colouring will be okay - it only really hurts when she's redoing bits and then she moves on, so it's tolerable. The issue is more about the tattooist finding the time than me tolerating the pain!

Posted by: Mata Jul 14 2010, 12:30 PM

The four hour session last Saturday was called off due to the tattooist being ill, so to try and catch up I've got five hours booked this Saturday. Five hours! Ouch! I doubt I'll be able to move much on Sunday...

Posted by: Faerieryn Jul 19 2010, 10:03 PM

Incidentally, I have made official plans to have my tattoo (you know the one I have been planning since, like, forever!) by my 30th, which is in March (make sure you are back in the country Mata, I intend to see you folk dance! Mwa hah hah!) This means that due to the position of it and schools having problems about showing things like tattoos I need it done by Christmas. I am consequentially looking for colourists still. Erin/ Wyvern said she would have a look at it for me but I am open to all suggestions as I am an equal opportunities faerie. You may even tell me it looks better without colour- I don't know! Please take a look back as this thread and if you fancy a go at colouring it give it a shot and let me know. I kinda like the idea of being able to say "My friend Mata designed it for me and my friend <insert YOUR name here> sorted the colouring!

Posted by: Mata Jul 21 2010, 12:44 PM

I might have another go at the drawing to see if I can do more with it these days.

Where is it going and how large will it be?

I've had more work done on mine this weekend just gone (four and a half hours colouring is very sore, especially if a lot of it is on the waistband of your underwear/trousers!). I've got another four hours lined up on Friday, then probably another three or four next Wednesday, by which point I really hope it will be done because it will have cost an absolute fortune! I'll put up more photos soon smile.gif

Posted by: Faerieryn Jul 21 2010, 09:15 PM

Cheers Mata!
It is going on the small of my back and will be no bigger than 15cm. I hope you aren't too sore for too long. I has been so long since I had my last tat that I can't remember the pain. I think it felt like a large amount of stings all at once but that was 9 years ago!

Posted by: Mata Jul 22 2010, 01:04 PM

I'm finding it mostly feels like someone pushing really hard with a biro rather than actual pain - although the bit on my hip was very painful towards the end of my last session (she'd already shaded it that day so it was effectively the second time that bit of skin was being tattooed in four hours, and it was a very long session).

I still think you should go bigger - 15cm is very small! When I saw the design held up to my skin I made the whole thing much bigger - mine's now about twice the size it was originally going to be, but it looks a huge amount better for it.

Posted by: Faerieryn Jul 24 2010, 10:35 AM

I probably will if I'm honest it all depends- the small of my back isn't exactly massive!

Posted by: voices_in_my_head Aug 4 2010, 09:27 AM

I've always thought that larger tatoos were much better than small ones. If you're going to get something put on your body permanently, why not make it to where it's the first thing people see?

Because maybe you don't want it to be for everyone else- you want it to be for yourself.

Posted by: Faerieryn Aug 4 2010, 06:42 PM

My main reason for wanting it small is because I'm small. I'm a size 8- 10 (US 2 or 4 I think) so where I want it done isn't that big a space in the first place. I also need to cover it up when at work. I'm a teacher and for some reason they frown on teachers showing body art (can't think why- everytime a kid sees my tattoo by accident they always ask whether it hurt. I tell them the painful truth!)

Still hoping for colouring ideas BTW! I've worked out that in order to get it done by my 30th and give it time to heal before going back to work I'm gonna need it doing over the christmas holidays

Posted by: Mata Aug 4 2010, 09:12 PM

Keep poking my about this. I doubt I'll have time over the next couple of weeks, but I'll definitey have a shot at redoing the central graphic and some colour for you by Christmas. smile.gif

I had my tat done in a location where I can keep it covered easily, but I feel like I want to show it off all the time! I didn't make the design to be something that is immediately easy to understand, but I think it's complex enough that it will look cool to anyone who has the time to really look at it.

I guess some people want to keep their tattoos to themselves, but for the most part a tattoo is an external expression of an idea or an aesthetic choice, so I guess most of them are done in visible locations except where they have to be hidden for work.

Posted by: Faerieryn Aug 4 2010, 10:06 PM

Cheers! BTW I saw the pictures on fb of your tat. It looks great. Is it definitely finished now?

I lean towards small to medium tattoos myself. The current largest are my DayanFlowers, natch, which for anyone who hasn't seen them, take up most of my left collarbone/clavicle area. I plan on having the flowers themselves extended to run over my shoulder and maybe onto my back someday - sadly, not anytime soon. I have my entire lifetime to shell out money for tattoos, and right now, other priorities are just above and beyond. The Hello Kitty I plan on putting on my right shoulder should be a little smaller than those, the 'en' for my elbow will be the smallest I have yet, and I'm planning on having my dead people stars colored in. Originally, (aka now) they're black tipped with an army/olive green in the middle, but I'm starting to think it would be more appropriate and more in line with my overall look and intent to get them blackened. They'll also transition up towards the 'luck' symbol better that way.
Hand tattoos are my thing, bigtime. I love my hands. I've had compliments on them, they're the most used part of my body as far as expression goes..and I want them decorated. Most of high school was spent drawing on my hands - both palms and the backs - more for how it looked rather than something to do. Outer ear and leg tattoos sound good too, but I don't think I'd get anything above the thigh. Concentrating on the tops of my feet/ankles for aesthetic purposes is main on my list.
Hopefully when I'm done, I'll be sprinkled lightly with art rather than heavily saturated or totally without it. That's the goal! Woo, bodymods. smile.gif

I want more, but I want to be in shape first.

Posted by: Mata Aug 8 2010, 05:39 PM

Yannick - No, those dots weren't deliberately left that way, we just missed them! They have since been filled in and the green has been gone over again.

Ryn - The design is finished, but the colouring needs touching up. The green is now done and shouldn't need to be touched again, but we'll be going over the dark and light blue bits again at some point in the future. The tattooist has offered to do this for free whenever I'm next in Oxford, but there's a lot of area to cover so it will probably need two fairly long sessions (4ish hours). So... Yes, it's sort of done now, but it's got more touch-ups to come.

And yes, I will get some decent photos online soon!
