And right fine it is too.
I've been absent from the Inter Nets since Sunday, which was when I moved in. I've only just managed to get access. For those of you not subscribed to my newsletter, I'm at the University of Sheffield studying for a BA in Philosophy. I've also signed up to learn Japanese, so look out for my posts in the Non-English forum So! What have I missed? QUOTE (Mata @ Sep 23 2005, 01:50 AM) Would three years count as a pretty severe case of writer's block? QUOTE How's the cooking going? What are the people you're living with like? Cooking's going quite well. I'm trying to get over my generally attitude of lethargy towards it - the "can't be bothered, I'll have a Pot Noodle" reaction. That's generally a solid way to survive the year. Often people declare that everyone they live with is their best friend only to decide that they hate them all by January.
As for the cooking, either you'll get bored of Pot Noodles, you'll run out of money, or your body will vigorously declare its need for something with a lower salt content. Possibly all of those at once. -------------------- Trouble Down Pit: Still updated every Monday and Friday

From what I saw when I was there (and both my sisters are at the moment), most uni students live on pasta and cups of tea. Not liking either pasta (I know it's flavourless, I don't like the texture) or tea, I was something of a traitor to the mould.
Rice is pretty cheap and versatile too, though, and you'll probably learn just how inventive it is possible to be with potatoes. |

I lived off pasta for most of my time at uni (with the exception of the 'Special K and Guiness' diet period of my life) but I think that was because for almost every day of my life with my parents my main meal would near-always involve potatoes. They're nice, but you can have too much of a good thing. Pasta is only as plain as you make it. Get yourself decent condiments and it'll never be plain again!
That's not quite true actually, the quick-cook stuff is just rubbish in comparision to the takes-five-minutes-longer variety. I assume that q.c. pasta has a higher water content, or something; it's just not as tasty. -------------------- Trouble Down Pit: Still updated every Monday and Friday

I was under the impression that quick cook pasta was generally smaller and therefore has a larger surface area to volume ratio allowing it to cook faster.
Anyway, it's good for camp stoves because there is nothing worse than having half cooked pasta because you ran out of gas -------------------- |

If cooking time is such an issue you can leave it to soak all day whack the heat on for 3 mins when you get home and then leave it to drain till it dries out to your tastes.

Hurrah for univeristy! I'm at mine now, starting my final year...it's quite scary...I'll have to do real life things after this year...or I could be like mata and study 'til I'm nearly 30...hmm....neither are appealing. Anyway, ain't it grand?
On the food front, you can get some rather nice ready meals from Tesco, not those nasty cheap ones either, really nice, or buy one of them whole chickens and strip it, then you can keep it in the fridge for a while, I had one that kept for at least a week or so. I mostly live of sandwiches, frozen pizzas and apples. Oh! Never underestimate the value of an avocado, nice snack on their own, with some sort of seasoning, or, and this is one of my favourites, mash up half of one and put it in a bacon sandwich, works better if you toast the bread too or it goes a little soggy. Other food advice, buy containers, cook it bulk and put it in the fridge or freezer for another time, because cooking for one all the time is a pain in the arse. My last word of advice, hobnobs. -------------------- He's a freak of nature, but we love him so.

Oi! Less with the '30' business! I'm only 28, and, all being well, I'll have finished my course before my birthday. 30 indeed... Anyway, it's hardly like I've been avoiding the real world. I don't get any grant so I've had to earn rent and food throughout the course. Academia is definitely not the real world but unless you're a full-time fully-funded student then you have some pretty harsh realities to get to grips with.
Doing real life stuff isn't so bad. Usually it involves finding something massively inappropriate, doing that for a few years, wondering what you're doing with your life... Actually, real life isn't too great. Remain a full-time student. -------------------- Trouble Down Pit: Still updated every Monday and Friday
