You only hear about the prostitutes who are trying to get out of the trade.

Many women who sell sexual favours (they never "sell themselves") don't call themselves prostitutes. The word is so closely associated to the abused women on street corners that are fed drugs by a "pimp" and don't get any of the money they earned, that the real sex workers of the world don't like to use it. I know many women (15 that I still talk to, another dozen that I've lost contact with) that sell sexual favours. None were abused. None have "pimps". None do drugs, and only one of them even drinks, the rest are 100% sober all the time. These women are happy, intellegent, and cautious. They don't get assualted, they don't get arrested, they don't get STDs. They have no desire to do anything else (careerwise).

My sister's friend is training to become a social worker and part of her practicum was to job shadow a social worker who works with "recovering prostitutes" (that is the actual term they use). 83% of the ones she's worked with were/are addicted to cocaine. What doesn't surprise me is that every one of those women were abused as children. From what she's told me, the women turn to drugs to numb the pain of the abuse and they can't work enough, or steal enough, to pay for their habits. They either become endebted to a drug dealer who later forces them into the career, or they chose the career so that they don't become endebted to a drug dealer.

Now, if prostitution was legal, the women in the first category, would be perfectly respectable tax-paying members of society, and the women in the second probably couldn't get into the career at all. Prostitution would have to be very heavily regulated to make sure that it wasn't just moving the same drug addicts off the street corner and into a brothel. But if we were forward thinking enough to legalise it, we would be forward thinking enough to regulate it properly.

And an even more positive scenario, if drugs were also legalised, the women would never be in debt to a drug dealer, because drugs would be sold in safer (for lack of a better word) ways, so no one would force them into prostitution to pay for their habit. Plus there would be no stigma attatched to saying "I have a problem with drugs" and they could get help before they'd created the financial situation that would require such a high paying job.

I think that it's also important to note that it's acceptable to be payed to have sex with someone under the conditions that they are also being paid (albeit much less in most cases) and the act is captured on film. In terms of morality prostitution is better than pornography.

Sex is a sacred act between two people who love each other. (That's what people like to say anyway) This can paint a completely different picture of prostitutes, maybe they just love everyone? It's perfectly possible for someone to love multiple people. Prostitutes make love to the people that can't find anyone else to do it. They make love to people without judging them. You've only got one leg? fine with her as long as you've got the money. You like to be spanked with a ruler? sounds good if you can afford her time. It's love for a fee, which I'm sure many women who actually want to be prostitutes wouldn't need if happiness paid the electric bill.

But pornography compared to real sex, is like the difference between watching a televangelist and praying. You're watching a phoney version of something you want (or ought to want) to be doing yourself. (To make the metaphor more complicatied, prostitution would be like having a priest help/assist/lead you in prayer and paying him for his time and effort)
