I'm finally getting around to finishing up Metroid Prime on the Gamecube.  I'm not particularly good at first person shooters, but it's fun.
*

It's good, but felt a bit artificially limited. Like Zelda: The Wind Waker, a lot of the gameplay comprises of long journies back and forth between places you've already been. The visual design is wonderful, but I wasn't convinced that the gameplay was really as fresh as the presentation suggested. It's another one on my 'good, but lacks heart' Gamecube pile.

Currently I'm working through Baten Kaitos. It's surprisingly good for a card-based battle system.
*

I think Jonman was having a crack at that... If I remember correctly he didn't get on with it, but I can't really remember why.

I don't know that one. What's Wrath?

I really liked the battle system in Baten Kaitos, but the rest of the game design sucked. The pre-rendered backgrounds are mediocre to say the least. The character animations seem to have gone back in time 5 years. The structure is so linear it takes any enjoyment out of walking the narrow path that's set out for you. The only variation comes from how much you can bothered to backtrack. The plot is alright, but all of the characters are less-than-one-dimensional. The vocal acting is unforgivable, and had to be turned off within 10 minutes of starting.

It's a shame, because as I say, the whole card system is excellant, with some nice fresh ideas (like the way the cards evolve over time).

You can't beat a bit of Spider Solitaire if you want to waste a few minutes/hours.

I'm still on PS1 Medievil and GC Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. Splin.C. is really quite annoying at times. The range of controls is very limited, so the feeling of being a special forces agent is massively hampered by the character's apparent inability to perform many basic functions, and the sudden jumps from abject blindness to X-ray vision of the enemies. I think I'm playing it too carefully and should probably just run forwards and kill everything...

I love Medievil! Man, that was one great game. It had this odd brand of humour that really appealed to me as well and the second was even quirkier. Bloody hard games though, I tell you that.

I find with Splinter Cell that I just end up getting frustrated and putting a hole in every guard's head, from the shadows of course. Either that, or I don't bother with stealth and just charge around firing wildly. You're right about the annoying variation in enemy AI as well Mata. They can go from practically God-like to not being able to see two mm in front of them. It's even worse in Chaos Theory, or so I hear. I will admit though, there is a massive thrill to be got from successfully sneaking up behind a guard and tw*ting him with the butt of your pistol.

Since we're discussing Splinter Cell, I feel any post really wouldn't be complete without this smiley:

ph34r.gif

Plus, it just gives me a chance to use it without looking a kn*b. ¬_¬

Broke out my Sega Genesis today. Played a quick round of Vectorman. Don't know if anyone else remembers it, but it was a true classic.

I had a craving to play Civ 3 a couple of weekends ago, but I can't for the life of me find the CD. Which was upsetting. Then the laptop fell over and was out of action for a couple of weeks. Which was upsetting.

Now I have the laptop back, but still can't find the CD. Perhaps I'll slide to Fleabay and see if I can pick one up for cheap...

Not too long ago, I found the N64 and played Yoshi and Donkey Kong all day.
Now, I'm working on Super Mario Sunshine. It's kinda strange that someone could base a whole game off of cleaning up a town....

Mario Sunshine didn't really do it for me and I'm just not sure why. It had a really nice feature in the water cannon thing, but it just didn't ever really feel... Something... 'Engaging' I guess might be the word I'm looking for.

I played God Of War at a friend's house earlier this week, and it is brilliant fun. Simple, easy to pick up, instantly satisfying with every button press, and with enough eye-candy that you really don't care that the battles are often very similar to earlier ones. It's one of those few times that graphics really can make a game worthwhile, and the visual design is good at the worst of times and stunning at the best. Even the sound design is great! Yep, I'm definitely a convert to that one and will be picking up a copy as soon as I can justify it from my diminished coffers!

Ooo, I just loved sliding Mario around in the paint, seeing him get all mucky and then washing him clean again. happy.gif

My, that sounded rather homoerotic.

Meh, I'll post it anyway.

I picked up The Bards Tale the other day. One of the funniest games I've ever grabbed. Not only that, the sarcasm is spot on. biggrin.gif

Best first five minutes of any game, just for the beer song. Hehehehehehe.

Whilst becoming bored today after finishing my browse of the internet, I thought I'd play a game. Then I discovered that I haven't actually got any installed anymore, it's been that long since I've played any.

So I settled for Windows 3D Pinball XP: Space Cadet.

I got a new high score though ;D

I used to play that a lot. I got a huge high score, several million if I remember correctly. It took ages... Then my hard-drive corrupted and lost the score. I've barely gone back to it since then!
