What is the Pokemon addiction? Do you really have to catch them all?

I stopped with pokemon after the first 150. Back then I collected the cards, played the gameboy games, red, blue and yellow, and was really quite into it. Then it expanded and I just totally lost interest. Not really sure why.

I can't play pokemon games anymore. I enjoyed them when they first came out; apparently I also predicted their massive success to someone a year before they were seen in the U.K. as well, but I don't remember this at all. Now, though, they just lack too much for depth of gameplay to interest me. Bringing out more than 150 pokemon didn't provide bigger variety, it just meant more grind to level up the "new" pokemon, when the 150 we already had were already fairly samey. How many are there now, anyway? I lost count after silver and gold (I think that was 250).

Pokemon used "new game" on Dave. It's not very effective!

I'm in that age group that couldn't really start playing Pokemon until we were five or six, and that's when Silver, Gold, and Crystal came out. Horrible blasphemy, I know, but that first 150 mean nothing to me. I recall being pretty annoyed when I was eight and couldn't catch any of the "cool" Pokemon on the earlier versions. tongue.gif

Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life - weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget God. The stars died so that you could be here today. ~Lawrence Krauss

I did not get Pokemon at all when they first appeared. The only Pokemon game I ever tried was Pokemon Colosseum. I hated it for the entire seven consecutive hours I spent playing it. At one point the main character is attacked by a group of three toughs trying to steal back something I stole from their boss. We have a pokemon battle and I win and in the cutscene after the three toughs are standing over me going "oooooooh, damn you. We'll get you next time!" or somesuch.

Just punch me! I'm right there, there's three of you and you've proved you're of low morals. Just punch me and take it.

Did not like.

four hundred some.
for me, i think it's also warm-toasty memory related. i got red and blue on gameboy and spent lots of time loving it and being occupied, enjoying the music, curling up in bed on sick days with something i didn't get bored of. i took a large break and never played gold, crystal, or silver, but i did play emerald on an emulator and had these wonderful times with my sister. i'd narrate the whole thing and she'd laugh. i don't get to see her any more, so this is a nice memory too what with me missing her lots. when they started making games for the ds, the graphics were greatly improved, so i dug that aspect too - it's all just linked together as a big comfort thing for me, reminding me of all those nice times at once.

sadly, the morning i got soul silver i hadn't slept at all and was extremely miserable most of the day. :P

My little brother was a more appropriate age for it than I was when it first came out; I remember giving him my (modest) collection of Pokemon cards when I decided I had spent enough money on something I rarely used. I'll admit, of all the passing fads I've bought into, Pokemon does have some of the most fun times attached to it, and I don't think the games are bad, per-se; I just grew out of them after a while. Kinda surprising for a guy who still has his warhammer stuff, still plays D&D and is so into computer games he's being educated to make them, but I like to think my tastes have never really made any kind of sense...
