I've had the pleasure (and in some cases not mentioned here, extreme DISpleasure) of viewing quite a large number of anime titles lately and I figured I'd share some recommendations here. Because I can. And I'm bored. So roll with it, kiddies.

1) Someday's Dreamers - I cannot recommend this title enough. It's about how, in present day Tokyo, there are people called Mages who can wield the Special Power. Magic, more or less. The government has set up a Department of Mages type thing and mages go through training and become registered Mages with the government and are only allowed to use their powers on behalf of an Official Request. Anyone can request these and after approval, the assigned mage will do their best to fulfill the request. This story follows Yume, a simply countral gal heading into Tokyo for her Summer training. Surprisingly, the show focuses a LOT less on the whole Mage thing and more on the human stories involved. Characters hold back using their powers because there's always a "better way". It may not sound the greatest, but give it a chance. The show is well written and very nicely paced, and even tear jerking an episode or two. Highly recommended.

2) Azumanga Daioh - Pure, irreverent Japanese crack. That's all I can say. Any show where they have intermissions of one of the main characters cooking and singing in a REALLY cute voice.....yeah. It's cute, it's saccarin, it's giving me tooth aches. Yatta. This show follows the stories of a very interesting group of high school students.

3) Cosplay Complex - Fanservice. Of the WORST kind. Cute anime girls dress up like our favorite anime characters for their school club. An italian exchange student dresses up as walls, idols, you name it, in order to get the true love of little girls so desperately seeks, only to be "taken severe advantage of" by an older widow. Noses bleed, milkies bounce, Aries runs crying. Can't get enough of it.

Azumanga daiyoh is very wierd, but good. My only gripe with it is they drag out a few things a little bit too long. I agree with Aries about the cuteness of Chiyo though.

I probably won't get to see the other shows you mentioned any time soon due to having 56k. It takes forever to watch series when I get a new episode about once a day. My current obsession is Naruto, and I'd already decided to start watching Saiyuki once I get caught up with it. I'll keep this thread in mind though.

Surely every single anime fan has seen Cowboy Bebop?

I did not list certain things such as Bebop and Trigun simply because.....they're a given. Cowboy Bebop and it's movie are simply pure art. I can't say it enough. The ending of the series deeply stirred my emotions and the movie was ungodly intense. And with Trigun....all I will say is this. Wolfwood. The last scene you see him in. Just...wow.

FLCL has long been a favorite of mine.

I only listed three newer animes I've just recently come across. Chiyo-chan is the cutest thing ever. I feel so bad for poor Osaka. Especially the episode where she's worn out and sleeping through class because she dreamed about Chiyo's pig tails all day. ANd the "Dream" episode where she kills poor Chiyo-chan. How freaking cute was that? The show DOES tend to drag on a bit at places....yet it's so addicting.

Another I would like to recommend is an off shoot of the FABULOUS Excel Saga (any anime fan should watch THAT...good lord is it funny). It's called Puni Puni Poemi. Be warned though, there's some pretty hefty adult content, what with the S&M, nudity, and strange abuse of a fish for a transformation. The show is insane. It's horrible fan service and probably one of the worst things ever created. I can't recommend it enough. Any one who enjoys Excel Saga will get a kick out of Puni Puni Poemi.

surely you jest. AS makes me ill. the art didn't impress me, either.

I highly recommend Serial Experiments Lain. The art is gorgeous. I'd give a capsule summary, if I could understand what it was about. Basically: If a program pervades the whole of the internet (the Wired) and could manipulate it, would it be a God? Lain enters the Wired after a classmate who committed suicide emails her, claiming to live on within the Wired. Where is the line between the digital and "real" world? Through it, do we create life? It makes my brain hurt, and if you search out the maddenly obscure DVDs, yours can too!

Other than that? I second Wolf's Rain; Escaflowne's a classic; Miyazaki's old movies, like Totoro and Laputa, are awesome; Eva's a given isn't it?; and FLCL. Oh, and Millenium Actress is near perfect. The art, the music, the story, everything. The ending almost made ME cry, and I usually make crying an annual event. Watch it! cons00m!

edit: I forgot Witch Hunter Robin! *slaps hand* but NOT the English dub: avoid it! I have a fansub box set, yay, and it's uebercool. 'Specially the last 15 or so episodes. it's brilliant.

Come on people, have we forgotten about Ranma 1/2 so quickly? What's not to like about a boy that turns into a girl, a man that turns into a panda, another boy that turns in to a cute little piggy, and a girl that turns into a cat? And then there's martial arts mayhem, and a bit of real human-based story (ie Kasumi/Akane and Tofu-sensei). Where is the love? happy.gif (Shame on you all)

Silly child, I already mentioned it. ^^ Eva's in the same realm as Bebop, it's required...er...viewing.

Heh. Definately Bebop...but because it can be rather hefty stuff, I recommend Miyazaki as a painless, easy way of learning to love anime. To view (and remember, always watch the Japanese if you can. Dubby companies have a bad habit of changing the script.): Princess Mononoke (Mononoke-hime), Spirited Away, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbour Totoro. There are others, but those are his best.

AHH, WHY?!?

<Okay, I admit it, there was a time when i watched it. Before it was popular, mind you.>

If you do watch them, make sure you move on to something better. you know, something that isn't just cheapo still shots.

Ooh, and i saw puni puni poemy... It was so funny, but not for anyone who can't handle heavy^2 adult themes.

Aries, my dearest e-hubby, got me hooked on this one. Revolutionary Girl Utena. It's, quite frankly, fricking brilliant. Very surreal in places, especially after the first saga. And the movie was brilliantly beautiful.

I wish I hadn't been out of the anime loop... so much catching up to do, so little time...
