Just watching Kerrang in the UK, and I noticed that they are at the end of GNR week. This means that they've been showing a lot of their songs live, and I've noticed that the original GNR are one HOT band. Axl Rose in the days when he looked good. The guitarists topless and in these tight, TIGHT leather trousers with their amazing bodies (mostly Slash here) glistening with sweat

ahem

well anyone else notice this?

Sometimes I think that all the members of GnR and Red Hot Chilli Peppers are allergic to shirts...

But Slash definatly has the best headgear I have ever seen.

I'm a member of the "old school" of rock, being nearly 30 I was on the scene when GnR were at their most popular. I used to have a huuuuuuuuge crush on Axl Rose, I've always loved feminine men and he was so lovely before hedonistic rock lifestyle made him look like a drag queen..... biggrin.gif
It seems really weird to me that a lot of you can't really remember them, i suppose because they brought rock into the mainstream I thought everyone knew the songs and Axl's strange snake dance: " Woaaaaaaah woah woah sweet child o' miiiiiine" biggrin.gif

Is that true about GnR bringing rock into the mainstream? I thought it was made mainstream in the 70s by the likes of Queen, but disappeared through the weird electronic music eras of the early to mid 80s... Look at any classic rock compilation and it's stuffed to the gills with the likes of Queen, early Meat Loaf, Steppenwolf, BTO, anything with Eric Clapton in, Thin Lizzy, T-Rex etc etc etc...

I suppose they did help to recommercialise it in the late 80s, though. Their brand is a fair bit harder and faster, less tame than the rock of the 70s. And at least they were better than Europe! *sticks fingers down throat*

About GNR bringing rock into the mainstream, perhaps this is so, but they certainly weren't the first to do it. But it goes beyond Leo's list, you all forget The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and even earlier Elvis. Rock has been mainstream since it was invented, although it might have slipped in and out throughout the decades.

But I wouldn't say that GNR had a less tame brand of rock than anyone before them, all the above artists were complete maniacs on stage, did you know that Elvis once destroyed a grand piano with is bare hands in the middle of a gig? It's just that the media only showed the safe, watered down version, 'specially in the 50s through middle/late sixties.

And we havew to remember the likes of Hendrix, taking nips of liquid LSD on stage at Woodstock, nips of liquid LSD! Do you know how much acid that is? ohmy.gif

And, well, yeah, my point is that GnR are probably more tame musically and in performances, it's just that previous bands had to at least disguise it to get on TV.

EDIT: Also, the underground rock band of the seventies, namely The Stooges, were completely insane. Iggy Pop rolling around in broken vodka bottles after jumping into them from a stack of amps? ... And songs like Death Trip (you're pretty face is going to hell)... what about the velvet underground, herion is probably one of the darkest songs ever. Well, the velvets weren't hard rock by any standards, but my point is that the most insane bands are the ones that don't even need to try to be 'hard'.

This really depends on how you define rock. I have always considered the likes of Queen and friends to be "safe" rock. The kind that your parents don't mind you listening to. GnR were very good at branching the gap between this "safe" rock and the "hard rock/ metal" of the late 80's early 90's. Personally I can remember fast forwarding my tape player when Axl Rose started singing "Outta get me" like greased lightening just in case my mother heard the "F" word being screamed at innumerate decibels over and over again. But I can also remember her loving "Sweet Child" and "Paradise City".

I got into GNR a few years back and they are one of my all time favourites. Its just music channels don't usually play their videos apart from Sweet Child O Mine and November Rain, so this was really cool. I already knew they were quite hot, but DAMN they were HOT live!

I remember when GNR first came out. I had the biggest crush on Slash. I wanted his cookies sooooo bad!!! It was sad I remember the birth and down fall of GNR. They where a pretty good band. I still have all their CDs.. I just cant get into some of their music now though.

Okay, Creedance Clearwater Rivival (Rock Oldies Radio) Queen, GnR, Metallica...etc... all belong to the genre of Rock...

However...

In sub-genre's : CCR is classic rock, Queen is POP rock, GnR is alternate rock (Originated in Seattle Washington, USA) and Metallica is Heavy (or were) rock.

Of course you now have Speed Metal, Ska, Punk and other sub sub-genres.

Does this help?
