Hey all.
I just got a letter from the Dutch government confirming they're lowering my student loan debt by 15k! I wanted to shout it out, but that seemed kinda pointless =D |

Congrats! There was a law passed recently in the United States that lowers the amount of debt you are required to pay off for student debts per month. It was reduced pretty drastically, which is a godsend to students here. I'm certainly happy about it.

I was actually pretty concerned about it, because they screwed up administratively which could make it look like I kinda defrauded them (which could mean I'd have to pay that money off myself anywy) so I was relieved they didn't make that mistake. |

Over here in the NL if you're over 18 and you study, you get financial support. If you finish whatever course you're doing in 10 years or less, the support is considered a gift. If you don't, it's converted to a loan (which is pretty reasonable, the rent is 10x as low as any of the banks) which you have to pay off in 20 or so years. So in July last year I graduated with about 19k in student loans (this is the money they gave me as a gift, and some more as a loan) and I was a bit scared that it wouldn't be deducted due to an administrative error. So seeing that removed from the balance was pretty nice. |
