Well, this is more of a daft thing, but it *technically* is a tip.
So, you guys ever have loads of leftover rice, but don't feel like using a microwave? Because you're hardcore and healthy like that? Zomg, there's a solution! And it's not putting the rice in a pan and adding water to it. 'Cause then it gets all soggy and nasty. Here's what you do! Put your rice in a Ziplock baggy. Take a pan and fill it up with water. Put the baggy in the water, so that it's covered completely Turn on the stove and wait for it to heat up. And then you're ready to eat! Yummy yummy! Oh the boredom... -------------------- ![]() |

*shrug* Apparently it does somewhat to the molecules and make all the nutrients and stuff go away? I could be totally wrong on that though.
*edit* Meh, googled it for a while. Some sites say that they're only harmful if used inappropriately. Others say that they are totally dangerous. [/color] -------------------- ![]() |

Dangerous if you, for example, place a balloon of hydrogen with spoon selotaped to the side in the microwave and turned it on*, dangerous in the explodey sense, yes. Not really so much with rice...though I was always told never to keep/reheat rice anyway...food poisong being what it is and all....
*in the sense that you would turn on an electrical appliance, obviously you wouldn't be telling it what a naughty little microwave it is and telling it it'll get a good seeing to when you get it alone in private, nor should you try...that'd just be weird... -------------------- He's a freak of nature, but we love him so.

I don't see what's so bad about reheating it in the microwave, other than that sometimes a few of the grains explode. -------------------- |

Not really so much with rice...though I was always told never to keep/reheat rice anyway...food poisong being what it is and all.... Rice keeps for ages. At least a week after it's cooked before it'll start to go bad, assuming you keep it in the fridge (not like snoo's former flatmate, or various people I've known). Not that it'll taste particularly nice after about the third day...but it certainly won't cause food poisoning! When in doubt, just sniff the dang stuff. If it smells moldy, probably not a good idea to eat it. If not, then go ahead and reheat it however you like. -------------------- I love you in a way that is mystical and eternal and illegal in 20 states.

I don't know about microwaves, but I doubt boiling plastic is going to be a particularly healthy thing to do...

Boiling + Microwaves = Bad
You can superheat and supercool water, and if you do it in conditions where the water doesnt have any disturbances, it can get beyond the point of boiling/cooling without showing signs. So if you try to boil water in a microwave, it gets past the point of boiling, but wont show it boiling, once you reach in and move the container it EXPLODES. Owch. Same with supercooling, you can get water lower than 0 degrees C and it can remain a liquid, as long as the molecules are still. The second you disrupt it it will crystalize. Pretty neat, huh? /spam -------------------- Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things that escape those who dream by night

So if you try to boil water in a microwave, it gets past the point of boiling, but wont show it boiling, once you reach in and move the container it EXPLODES. The chances of it happening in a real life situation is next to nothing, the water has to be pure for it to happen. Also, to avoid the plastic toxins you could always implement the 'chocolate melting method' and put the rice in a bowl over the water. Would take longer but would still work pretty much the same. -------------------- |

No, you melt chocolate by putting it over either an open flame or over boiling water.

In another container. It's called a double-boiler--usually you stack two saucepans on top of each other, the bottom one filled with a coupla inches of water and the top with the thing you're melting/heating/boiling. Instead of heating the thing with a gas flame, you're heating it with steam, which means milk is less likely to curdle, chocolate less likely to burn, PLASTIC less likely to FILL YOUR WATER WITH DANGEROUS INEDIBLE MOLECULES.
Just kidding. I have no idea what plastic does when boiled in water. -------------------- can I kiss your dopamine? In a way I wonder if she's living in a magazine |

SPS was suggesting, quite rightly, that Hershey's is not really chocolate, it is merely a chocolate substitute that you think is chocolate because you have never tasted real chocolate.
And therefore Hershey's should be burnt. At every opportunity. -------------------- QUOTE (Peter Griffin) Math, my dear boy, is nothing more than the lesbian sister of biology. |

You can superheat and supercool water [...] The chances of it happening in a real life situation is next to nothing, the water has to be pure for it to happen. Not so, apparently. A relation of mine managed it with a mug of milk (which I think cold be classed as very impure water!); however, it's very unlikely to happen in modern microwaves because of the rotating plate moving things around enough to disturb the process. -------------------- Trouble Down Pit: Still updated every Monday and Friday

Okay I don't know what you mean but I don't really want to know what you mean... :S What he meant was, as CM pointed out....Hershey's is disgusting. As is most mass-produced chocolate in the US (well, except Reese's...ooh, peanut butter). You really have to go to a small, family owned chocalatier to get yummy chocolate there, at least in my experience. Oh, or look inside Ben & Jerry's ice cream. I actually didn't think I even liked chocolate untill I was a teenager because I'd only had icky Hershey's type stuff. It makes my throat burn...bleugh.
