That was meant to be a burning noise. Dunno if anyone got it.
So yes, Burning Man. For those who don't have time or patience to follow the link, it's a massive art festival in the Nevada desert. I'm thinking of going for the first time this summer. I know loads of what past Mans have been like, but have very tiny miniscule nuggets of knowledge of what experiencing one would turn out to resemble. For example, I have no idea if a young person like myself would be able to fly out, get to the festival and back without any car access or skill with driving. Possible? Probably not. Money and weather are not huge things for me (and yes, I know I live in nice, cushy NY with no dust storms or 100+ degree heat) as I am durable as well as in possession of a job. Woo! But what about the other stuff? For example, the official site tells me that I need a parent or guardian over 21 to bring me. This is a no-no. Also, my strapping nubian men have informed me that they'll be on vacation Labor Day and thereby unable to carry all the stuff I'll need. How can I whittle the essentials (tent, sleeping bag, clothes, water, art) to be manageable and still survive? Thoughts? Encouragements? Kicks in the behind for being such an ambitious fool? All welcome. -------------------- can I kiss your dopamine? In a way I wonder if she's living in a magazine |

You can get there with a tour group called Green Tortoise (or something green like that
And check out the Tales from the Playa part of the site I worked my way through them all and there's stunning stories in there. But Mata's our local expert round here so I shall leave it to him to let you know anything else. Green Tortoise tours -------------------- |

I'm really interested in going but its cost and time thats the problem for me. I'd ideally like to go after University when I'm a little bit older and wiser.

My brother is going this year.
Thought I'd throw that out there. -------------------- If the world collapses and we find ourselves closer together I'm convinced it would be positive.

Its a long time. What better way to celebrate its end than at Burning Man?

Probably....for you maybe, for myself, I plan on mooching around a bit. I might have party...or just go to the pub with some friend and get unbelievably drunk....that'd be fun, though....party in a pool house is always a good giggle!

![]() 'Trouble Down Pit' now online! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Group: Admin Posts: 10,141 Joined: 22-February 03 From: Southern UK Member No.: 1 Gender: Male |
Considering I got to the BM in 1999, powered by very little other than determination and a friendly attitude, I would say that anyone who wants to get there and who can reach the right continent will be able to go. If you're starting in NY then life is much easier than for a person from Europe. There are some big BM groups based in NY who you can meet up with to get yourself fully prepared before you travel:
http://regionals.burningman.com/ If, for some mad reason, you decide not to do things that way then you could do it my way when I first went. I posted on the ePlaya ( http://eplaya.burningman.com/ ) that I was travelling by myself, I couldn't drive, I didn't have anywhere to stay, and I didn't know anyone else who was going, but that I was definitely going to the BM that year and I could get to any airport in America. I was sent about 50 offers of rides from people all across the US and tagged up with a group of uni kids from Berkley California. I stayed with them, pitched in with cooking and for food costs, and even slept in their houses for a few nights on either side of the burn itself. They met me from the airport, and it all worked despite the fact that I had never seen a single photo of them or spoken to any of them. My gods I was trusting! Still, it all worked and I had one of the best times of my life. The easy method is to go with The Green Tortoise, but if you have the option of hooking up with a load of loonies who are going out there to make art, rather than just travel and experience, then I highly suggest doing just that. There are always camps looking for enthusiastic members, so hook up with one of them and enjoy the ride. And no, I can't actually tell you what the Burning Man is or what it means (despite having been twice). -------------------- Trouble Down Pit: Still updated every Monday and Friday
