Christmas is just around the corner, so it gives me a valid excuse to enjoy my most favourite treat of the season: the mince pie! Of all the countless goodies that Christmas brings to our mouths, I find the mince pie irresistible.
However, I have discovered that my love of them is not shared by everyone! I cannot quite comprehend why anyone would dislike them, and my only conclusion is that these people are just doing it in order to fight against the conformity of Christmas commercialism, but they secretly devour hundreds of them when nobody is looking. Naturally, I decided a poll of Matazonians was in order. So... like them, or hate them? Or maybe you haven't had one, or don't even know what one is (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mince_pie). This poll refers to the sweet mince pie, of Christmas tradition: QUOTE Mince pies normally have a pastry top, but versions may also be found without the top in which case they are known as mince tarts. Mince pies are filled with mincemeat – a preserve typically containing apple, dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas, spices, and either suet or vegetable shortening. Vote now! -------------------- |

I could not vote; there was not an appropriate option.
I generally don't like any desserts that involve raisins or other dried fruits (cranberries being the exception). Mince pies, Christmas pudding, fruitcake...blech. I like raisins and most dried fruit on its own, just not in stuff. Kind of like how I like raw cherries, but not cherry pie, and raw apples, but not apple pie or apple cake. ...I'm really not a picky eater, honest! This post contains the bulk of my dislikes as far as food is concerned (the other main one being the horrible things restaurants over here seem to try to pass off as Mexican food -------------------- I love you in a way that is mystical and eternal and illegal in 20 states.

I could not vote; there was not an appropriate option. That's okay, it keeps the results skewed in my favour, thus denying the mince pie haters any recognition I generally don't like any desserts that involve raisins or other dried fruits (cranberries being the exception). Used to not like them, because i was young and thought they were made out of the animal type of minced meat, and would just eat the surrounding pastry. Now that I am older and wiser (?) I appreciate them in their full glory. Mmmmm. Incomplete without mulled wine though.

I am incomplete. Yeah, sure, but what about the mince pie topic?... Ba-dum-tush I'm sure someone will be willing to force mince pies down your mouth whilst you are here. -------------------- |

Hmm. You know...It occurs to me that perhaps I should try homemade mince pies (and maybe even Christmas pudding) before dismissing them completely. I've only ever had them at my in-laws' house. Their Christmas pudding is store-bought, and the mincemeat comes from a jar and is spooned into bought pastry (or it has been when I've been there and paying attention, at least).
Mind you, I'll probably still hate them, as I don't like the stuff that goes into them, but I can't really say I've given them a shot if I've not had homemade, I think. And if I find a high-rated recipe, make it, and don't like it...well, I know moop will eat them, at least! -------------------- I love you in a way that is mystical and eternal and illegal in 20 states.

I feel kinda bad for being the first one to actually vote "no"...
But then I do sort of have deformed taste-buds, so that's my excuse. Actually, I don't really mind them, per se, they don't disgust me or anything, I'm just not a big fan of them, and don't enjoy eating them particularly. -------------------- When, will I, will I be famous?

The 'More to follow later' has come!
I will not divulge my recipe.. for in it there are many family secrets that if released could and WOULD set into motion the downfall of most civilized nations... That being said... It cannot be called a mince pie without first cooking the mince in a mixture of sherry and rum. It makes it wholesome that way. And Rounded. (cue drummer) I would consider sending samples or inviting folks over for some... but that would mean less for me. Sorry, but I am a little possessive of my pie. And my wooden spoon as left splinters in some that got 'handsy' So, as my favorite professor would say: Discuss! -------------------- It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion,

The best thing about homemade mince pies, is that I can eat a lot more of them before I start feeling oogy. Supermarket mince pies must have some kind of ingredient added to help addicts. Homemade ones though: I can eat like a total pig \o/

My favourites have a meringue top instead of pastry and a slice of home-made marzipan at the bottom under the mincemeat. Om nom.

After a barman friend of mine made me an amaretto sour, I am more in love with marzipan than ever. It has to be home-made though, otherwise it's terrible. Unless the person who made it is rubbish at making marzipan.
