Some of you may remember the test questionnaire I posted last year for my dissertation. I've refined it a bit now, and I've been told I need to base my dissertation around what answers I get back from this, so if you could all please take a few minutes to fill this in I would be so grateful!! (This is for everyone, don't feel like you shouldn't answer if you don't know anything about archaeology, I need the opinions of people like that the most!)

If I said the word “archaeology”, what would you think of? Digging, ruins, pottery, mosaics, bones What period/place in history would you think of? Romans, probably more Roman Britain If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be? Gotta be Indiana Jones, probably Lost Ark If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be? Erm. Coudn't name one to be honest. Can you name an archaeologist? Hmm. Tony Robinson Can you name a female archaeologist? Yes, if Lara Croft counts Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? Er, yeah. There are role models to be found in every field. Would you ever consider a job in archaeology? Possibly. Lab-based rather than field-based though. Do you consider archaeology glamorous? Not really, conjures up images of that guy with the crazy hair from Time Team Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like? probably not, I would guess it takes longer, and there's less excitement. most things seem to be like that. Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? I'd assume so, with technological developments and new methods Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? Labyrinth by Kate Mosse is sort of about archaeology, I guess but it's probably not what you mean Can you name an archaeologist? No Can you name a female archaeologist? It was one of my top 5 jobs when I was about 8 but as of now I don't think it would suit me Do you consider archaeology glamorous? It a 'covered in dust and dirt' way, some of the things that are found are amazing so it has its own special glamour to it Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like? To a certain extent, with Time Team you have all of the time constraints but less of the financial ones which can be seen in both Jurassic Park and Labyrinth Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? With the availablity of portable computers and more sophisticated mechanical tools, probably quite significantly Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? It probably has both good and bad bits, it brings peoples attention to it but possibly not to the bits that would help (example: need for funding etc) Age: 21 Sex: Female Education: Currently undertaking undergraduate degree Country: UK -------------------- |

I wanted nothing more than to be an archaeologist when I was younger, but now I've moved to a more arts-based career ambition Do you consider archaeology glamorous? Yes... not real archaeology, but the idea of it from constant TV, film, and book fame. Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like? I'm not sure, but I think that, like most things, media has completely distorted what archaeology is, a la the CSI shows. Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? Yes, most likely. Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? Probably a good thing... it gets interest up, and people who would never think of a career in a less glamorized field might be drawn to archaeology. Tony Robinson's the nearest I could get I'm afraid, but he's more of a presenter. Can you name a female archaeologist? Again, the nearest I could get is Tony Robinson. So no. No I can't. Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? The thought hadn't really occured to me before reading this question, but I suppose a large repertoire of knowledge would be something that newcomers would aspire to possess, and so I would consider those to have vast libraries of knowledge on the subject to be role models, yes. Would you ever consider a job in archaeology? I have a vague interest in the subject, but far too vague to ever get into it. Were I to list the top 20, or possibly even 50 jobs I would like to do in my life, I shouldn't imagine archaeologist would hit on it. Do you consider archaeology glamorous? In a manner, yes. Though more in a kind of quietly glamorous way. I like the idea of being able to surround onesself with knowledge and relics of the past, and I consider museums to have glamour of a sort, and so archaeology, though perhaps not the manual work of digging itself, more the overall discovery and accumulation of items from the past to be glamorous. Do you think what you see in the films/tv/books is an accurate portrayal of what archaeology is really like? I don't really see a lot of of archeology in modern media. I would guess that for fiction, it is made to be more exciting to catch the interest of a wider group of people, but I suppose things like Time Team are reasonably accurate protrayals of what it is like, yes. Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? I assume technology, as with all things, has had a large impact on it. What with being able to scan underground things before digging, and finding otherwise invisible things previously written on texts and other such things. I would guess it has changed quite a lot. Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? I think that as with all things, it makes little difference. I think that glamourisation of archaeology would lead to a greater interest in the subject for the duration of the popularity of said glamourisation, as seen with things like psychology and forensic science, and then return to more normal levels. Tony Robinson and Time Team, mostly. A lot of digging, and using very small brushes to clean very large, very old ceramics. Also Jurassic Park, but then I remember that's Paleontology. Even if I'm personally not interested in it, I can see why archaeology is important, and if it's viewed as glamorous, more people are going to go "Hey, I'm totally digging archaeology right now. Pun intended." The only way I can see the glamour damaging archaeology is when the archaeologists start spending all their budgets on totally pimping their diggers, at the expense of the dig itself. Top of my head I think Egyptian pyramids, Incan society, and Hawaiian caving. What period/place in history would you think of? The big island of Hawaii before the death of Captain Cook. If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be? I'm sorry I can't think of one. If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be? Again I'm drawing a blank, sorry. Wait, would National Geographic work, or is it considered a magazine? Can you name an archaeologist? Howard Carter.  I'm trying very hard to remember the name of my professor in anthropology from university but unfortunately can only think of his nickname. Apparently on a dig he was one of the coolest people ever to work with. In the classroom he was often somewhat dull. Can you name a female archaeologist? No. I'm sure that women work in the field. Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? Once you began studying archeology I'm certain you would find people to admire. I was rather pleased that a recent group of scientists agreed not to separate a cromagnan (neanderthal?) couple that was found in a rare double burial. Would you ever consider a job in archaeology? I did when I was in university. At this stage I would probably continue in health care. Do you consider archaeology glamorous? It looked to be hard work but very interesting hard work. The payoff of cool stuff would make up for the hours that could be spent armed with a small trowel and brush. Probably around the turn of the century, when Egypt first started getting poked around in. If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be? Louis Leakey--of course, he's hella dead, but still an arachaeologist. Can you name a female archaeologist? Mary Leakey. Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? I'm sure they exist, and could impart a lot to the general public, but they're not really role models until more people are aware of them. The only archaeologists I could name did work a long time ago--I can't think of any from the modern age. Would you ever consider a job in archaeology? Maybe as a volunteer bone-scrubber, but I don't think I have the patience or dedication to be a bona-fide archaeologist. Do you consider archaeology glamorous? Yes. I think Time team probably shows what a dig could be like, The more fantastical sources like indiana jones, tomb raider and the mummy are probably not representative. Do you think archaeology has changed at all over the past 100 years? yes, a shift from glorified treasure hunters to people who honestly care about discovering information and preserving relics has occured. Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? media glamorisation provides money and resources, it also sources wannabe's and misinformation. Personally no, I wouldn't be as dedicated as some archeologists I've seen on TV are. Do you consider archaeology glamorous? I wouldn't, because it seems like you have to work hard to find aand uncover things, and you would get dirty/sweaty so I don't think that would be considered glamourous. But it is excitiing when they find new things so in that respect it could be slightly glamourous. I think certain aspects are, but on TV they don't show the length of time and work that it takes to do this job, so I don't think all of it is portrayed. In Jurrassic park I think it was glamourised, and that could be a good thing as it may have got people more interested and aware of archaeology. Digging, finds, finds processing, trowls, trenches, Flinders Petrie, Egyptology, Indiana Jones, the list is endless really. What period/place in history would you think of? Ancient (but only because I studied Ancient History and Archaeology) which involves Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Anglo Saxon, Viking, Iron Age (Celts). If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be? Indiana Jones trilogy If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be? Archaeology Can you name an archaeologist? Lots! Famous or not? Can you name a female archaeologist? Sara-Jane Farr (not famous - I've worked with her) Do you think there are any role models to be found in archaeology? Yes but not always good ones. Lara Croft and Indiana Jones do not reflect current archaeological practices and most that do are usually fairly boring (i.e. Time Team). Would you ever consider a job in archaeology? Yep! Good in a way as it attracts more people to the profession however it doesn't always give an accurate view of what archaeology is about. The films tend to be over glamorised but the TV shows can be quite accurate if not a little staid and boring. Digging up, looking for and finding old stuff; foundations; roads; tools; bodies (human and all elese, as well as insects and tiney creatures); jewles; ceramatics; types of things that have been found already, new things that make people (sometimes) know what better happened at a place in time. What period/place in history would you think of? Well, aside from the Anciant civilisations, anything really that's older than anyone alive, I guess. To put a time on it, maybe 150 plus years ago. As for place, well- anywhere, Doubt there are many places on earth where there arn't things to be dug up. If you could name only one archaeological film/tv show, what would it be? Time Team, thgouh I don't watch it. Mebbe if I had cable I could name some Discovery channel progs too. If you could name only one archaeological book, what would it be? Off the top of my head? Advances in technology has probably changed it vastly, as well as maybe (to speculate) the, erm.... attitudes/ ideologies/ approaches to archeology. Stuff like remains that have been taken (was an article about some Aboriginal remains that Austrlisa (loosly paraphrsaing) deemeed should be given back from a museaum (think it was British) who contest that they are the only ones of their type and therefore the mudeaum should be allowed them). I guess ethics must of changed. Do you think the glamorisation of archaeology in the media is a good or a bad thing? Why? To shed light on archeology I would expect a good thing- opening up people's minds. But as to wheather it's a fair representation of what archelogy is, and how it is cnoducted, I dunno.
