I would like to get my 'man' in Chicago a truly British present. I was thinking about a book on how to be British. Something jokey, not too expensive but charming

Xmas Pudding cant get more british than that unless you want to go the mince pie route but those seem to unnerve them for some reason in my experience.

Hmm. If you like this guy, I would not suggest giving him Christmas pudding.
I know there are some Americans out there who like it, but there are also some Americans out there who thought Sarah Palin would make a fabulous Vice President. The rest of us — the sane ones — don't claim them. On the other hand, you do get to set Christmas pudding on fire, so it has entertainment value. Only good part of it, if you ask me!

I ended up getting him a book from Waterstones written by Dara O'Brien about his exploits in England and what's makes us so 'English'. Ed suggested the American wartime things so I might get him one of those too. Don't want to go over the top though as I don't know if he's got my anything and it might be a little embarassing

On the subject of Xmas presents, what can you get for grandparents? One of them can't hear well, his sight is going, and hes had two hip replacements so he can't get out much.
I'm sure they go through these stages just to be awkward at times like these. |

My grandpa is in a similar condition these days, despite still living on his own. We usually get him "medicine" (read: whisky), but my mum and sister like to take him out shopping for an afternoon every now and again as a treat; he gets out of the house and is able to dictate to someone what clothes he needs and such, and they get to assuage the guilt they feel for not having seen him for the rest of the year. Plus they get to shop, which everybody knows is a girl's favourite pastime...
