Tatu's version of "How Soon Is Now" kicks serious booty.... GO TATU!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

I haven't heard it...but no. It can't be.

I heard both. The Tatu version sucks. Sorry deaq, but the Smiths version is definitive, as well as bein the original.

I hate poor cover versions of classics. mad.gif

I love the Smiths though. All top stuff. I think Morrissey went off the boil a bit once they split up though.

Smiths are grand and Placebo's cover of Bigmouth strikes again is damned good too.

The Smiths eh, depressing lyrics but with the fantastic guitar of Johnny Marr to make the songs sound cheerfull.

A strange combination that works for me. One of my all time favourite short songs is 'Please,Please,Please Let Me Get What I Want' 2 minutes of sheer beauty.

QUOTE (cheese is funny @ Oct 12 2003, 11:33 PM)
now to be on topic... genre of the smiths? just wondering...

Genre wise, The Smiths used to be under "indie" (independant, you know), as they weren't "mainstream", they are along the lines of Echo And The Bunnymen and other eighties greats! Morrisey, the lead singer is well known for his dour lyrical genius and having gladiolli hanging out of his back pocket as he danced around the stage! Oh, yeah, and they're great!!

*mutter, mutter "Yes, I remember The Smiths - I really am that old!"* dry.gif

the Cure is good, but i am more hopelessly biased than anyone. to me, the Smiths represent the greatest band in all of history. of course that's inaccurate, judging by sales, popularity, et-cetera, but hey.

..i'm still very, very scared by the amount of people that've never heard of them.

Pah. Future Sound Of London are still the best band in history, and I am also happy to disregard sales and other statistics in support of this claim.

FSOL is very cool electronica, so absolutely nothing like The Smiths.

I have discovered recently that 'Charming Man' is almost impossible to sing along with on SingStar. The pace of the delivery is completely ridiculous:

lyricslyricslyricslyricslyricslyricslyricslyrics
lyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiics
oooh
lyricslyricslyricslyricslyricslyyyyyyyyyyyyyricslyricslyyyyyrics

Unless you know the song precisely already you don't stand a chance!

More of a reason to know the songs inside out, then! You know, just incase someone suddenly challenges you to a duel of Smiths' songs.
It's happened.
I'm lucky to be still standing.

FSOL? Eww. I'm not into their stuff whatsoever They have a cool website though.

The best band is most definitely either G3 or something including Slash.
*Guitars totally make a band a gazillion times better*

Never actually heard of The Smiths before this, but will google now.

The FSOL website for the Dead Cities album was what first inspired me to get into web-design. After much nagging by me, it was put back online! Yay! http://raft.vmg.co.uk/fsol/

Their last two albums, released as 'FSOL presents Amorphous Androgynous' were hippy nonsense and really patchy. A few good tracks and a lot of average psychedelia around them, but Lifeforms, ISDN, and especially Dead Cities are brilliant. They have been my constant source of inspiration for ten years - my degree dissertation was written to their accompaniment, about 80% of my PhD thesis was written with one of those albums playing, and now they always go on when I want to get into the mood to write my novel. I've tried other things, but they never quite work as well!

Guitars are okay, but... Well, they always sound like guitars. There's variety of course, but it's variety inside a spectrum. I like lots of guitar-based bands for their music, lyrics, or passion: their choice of instruments don't really influence me!

(Except the Hammond Organ, which cannot possibly ever produce bad music. Even bad tunes on a Hammond sound incredible.)

..that was amazingly clever. gave me a pretty good laugh, too. tongue.gif
i haven't gotten around to giving FSOL a listen yet, but hearing that it's good background music to inspiration really turns me into them. the smiths usually does that for me - i can't quite understand it. the whole obsession all started when InKy dedicated 'There is a Light...' to me, as cheesy and embarrassing as that sounds. i downloaded that, thought it was alright, wasn't much into some of their other stuff after that, and then BAM! Bigmouth Strikes Again popped onto my CD player, and i was..hopelessly hooked. for the last couple of years, Rubber Ring's been my favorite, but the only two I can listen to while writing or reading are oscillate wildly and money changes everything. if you're familiar (see: obsessed) with the Smiths, you'll know it's because those are two of their instrumentals. that, or I've never heard a version with words.
