I think the idea is to calm traffic by scaring drivers to death
American peeps don't really have traffic islands as far as I'm aware, but for those of us lucky enough to live in the UK, I think if I came across this place whilst driving, I'd be in need of a fresh change of underwear. I've been round that many, many times (I live only half an hour from Swindon) and it looks a lot worse than it is.
I think the trick is to observe the normal rules for the mini roundabouts but pretty much ignore the big one. Either that or close your eyes and hope for the best...

Circle...so many cars...so many ways
 I can't get behind the wheel for another 2 years, but CRIKEY! Here we have traffic circles, in which they plop a huge concrete circle in the middle of intersecting roads, plant some trees in the middle, and make confusing signs. Navigating around the circle slows down traffic. This is in the SUBURBS. A car crosses one of the streets every thirty seconds. Oops. For a moment i thought you meant actual islands, like Long Island. There's a something at the end of my street that cars drive around to make U-turns. It's pretty neglected though.

I love roundabouts, at first they seemed quite scary (especially because the first time I ever drove around one it had a triangle bit between the in and out lanes and as I got to the give way line I was concentrating too much on stopping and drove straight onto the triangle and stalled...woo) but after that I came to love them! am I just being really slow? -------------------- |

Sweet Lord. I have enough trouble with the three roundabouts on the island I live on. That ginormous roundabout would probably get me into an accident daily. Plus you wouldn't be able to have any fun riding around in circles over and over without worrying about whom you're going to hit.

Aerial view indeed! .... Correct me if I'm wrong, but that roundabout must achieve the best affect when you're in car, approaching it, seeing it from a 'very close to the ground' angle ... all you would see is something the size of half a football pitch, covered in streaks of paint, with cars all over it going in circles and panic stricken faces screaming "get the f@ck outta the way!!!!!"
