So why don't we have a philosophy subforum? I think it would be kind of appropriate. Or do people just not care for those sorts of discussions? (I've noticed that attempts for them don't tend to go very far) I think it would be really cool!! Is it just me though?

While I greatly enjoy philosophical discussion, I see neither the widespread demand or need for one. All deep thought issues go in the issues forum, the subforum would have few topics and would set a precedent for way too many subforums.
The purpose of the subforum is to unclutter the main forum--this would not do that. -------------------- Still around, just lurking.

IT sounds good in theory, but like Max said, there's not much demand for one. Games was one thing because there are fifty thousand games and more to come, I assume.
What kind of topics would there be? They would have to be pretty good because philosophy discussions in general either become flame wars or run out of gas. The previous is why I'm hesitant on starting another anarchy thread (anyone remember what happened last time?). -------------------- With every breath...and all that I am...I will make a stand...until the end. |

What happened? It turned out that nobody knew what anarchy actually is?

We could have a topic on the probability of Hilbert's Hotel where there are an infinite number of rooms which are all full and yet there is always room for one more. Or we could talk about the existance of time without a universe. Or we could talk about whether Ramen Noodles really exist for the good of man. The possibilities are infinite like the number of rooms in Hilbert's Hotel. -------------------- ![]() Being Pimped By Aries Since 2003 |

Point, Lo. Do you personally deem it worthwhile to start a philosophy subforum? If so, go for it and we'll try to make it a decent subforum.

I think it would be interesting but I don't know that it would do to well. Perhaps a couple of topics here and there about philosophical ideas would work, but a whole forum probably wouldn't. I was just mainly being a brat and pointing out that a philosophy forum wouldn't have to be totally devoid of interesting topics. -------------------- ![]() Being Pimped By Aries Since 2003 |

Never said it would. I'm just saying that they're not extremely common and often just fizzle out. The games can keep going and going so thus have merit for their subforum.

Games are so dull. *pouts* I ... I guess I assumed the issues forum was all about politics and and....things that are going on, not about obscure ideas n' stuff. I should have payed more attention. >.< I can't really think of a topic, but I like to respond to topics. I like topics about philosophy because rambling is so much fun. I was surprised it didn't have it's own forum, and I am more surprised that ... that nobody cares. The truth hurts sometimes.

I can't wait until college and I can take a philosophy class. I absolutely love philosophy.

Philosophy topics are entirely appropriate for the Issues forum - in fact, any serious or semi-serious issue intended to be debated is what the forum's for. The reason I'm not particularly in favour of a Philosophy forum (though it's my favourite school subject, and I'm going to do my undergraduate degree in it, and probably post-grad too) is for two reasons:
1) To a degree, a lot of the topics are philosophical; principally ethics and political philosophy. 2) There doesn't seem to be a great demand for areas of philosophy like metaphysics, epistemology or the philosophy of mind. Cait: What do you want to talk about? Go to Issues and start a thread! I'd like to see discussions like that on these fora. Start the thread, and I promise to post in it -------------------- Every sort of expert knowledge and every inquiry, and similarly every action and undertaking, seems to seek some good. Because of that, people are right to affirm that the good is 'that which all things seek'...

I dunno, Sean. I don't think debating the merit of Ramen is worthy of the Issues forum. It's rather Dafty.

Makes sense. I have noticed that there is a hint of daftiness in certain debates.

This may not be of any interest to anyone, but I thought I'd post anyway. I've a fair amount more Chinese and Western philosophy than your average American (which means I've opened a book) and found a few things that are greatly intriguing. Mostly it comes from the Dao, but other instances can be found in cinema and literature as well; the saying that we never step into the same river twice. Applied to life, one little saying or idea can have some really profound implications if one happens to be a thinking man, or a pothead. Is anyone else interested in daoism or Eastern phil in general?

then sitting by the radar array, awaiting a reply. |
