Thats ok smile.gif It's just that many Pagans, including myself, recognise Witchcraft as a valid and indeed growing religious choice. I'm sure If I put a link to a Buddist or Christian festival in Daft then offence might be taken by followeres of those particular religions.
Don't worry about it tho, ok?? smile.gif

Edit: Take that back, don't think I'll go now I see its a Children of Artemis thing.

Yeah I gave up with them years ago. They are good for people who want to get into the craft and get starter information but I soon realised it wasn't for me and dropped them like a hot potato. Not my bag. Still a Pagan tho smile.gif

They gave me the impression that they're just there to take 14 year olds pocket money. Didn't like them at all. But yeah there are always other paths to take.

I got that impression too. There was a big scuffle between them and the Pagan Federation a few years back that in my opinion was extremely childish and could've been avoided but that's a completely different kettle of fish.

Personally I didn't like the Witchfest I went to in 2002. I wasn't impressed but I did hear other people saying it was good.

If you want to try something different the Pagan Federation do have an annual conference. It's a bit more geared to older people but I hear it's good. They also do local conferences around the country.

They have a thing in the PF where they don't like to promote as they don't want to be seen to be forcing their "religious" views on others. Personally I never agreed with that and would do everything I could. I used to work as a volunteer for them until I was stabbed in the back by some so-called friends. Why does that seem to happen to me all the time? I think I am too trusting rolleyes.gif Anyway it wasn't the PF that did me wrong. They are brilliant and their cause is worthy smile.gif I don't think I'll go to the London National Conference but I do try and get to the Leeds one.

Imply? Umm... Not really, I was just amused by the disparity of having a pagan's convention in a town that's world renouned for being a bit rough and very boring.

I've heard some of my Pagan friends talk about this. It seems to be a pretty damn big deal if some of my friends and even the Pagan Alliance at my university are talking about it.

I was very offended in RS class, we were talking about all the religions in the world and then we were asked to do a chart of all the religions in the tutor group and they missed out both satanist and pagan (me being a former pagan and now a satanist).

Pagan is quite a wide definition and not the most desciptive. Ask 10 'Pagans' what the word 'Pagan' means and you'll get 11 answers. Did the class put Christian as one name or did they break it down into Catholic, Anglican etc?

As for Satanism, I can't remember if it is considered a world religion or not. But I'm sure most schools would associate the religion with just being anti-christian or not accpetable to be taught about in schools.

There is actually actually a Church of Satan, but I don't think Satanism is regarded as being a religion by either the US or the UK (don't hold me to that). The main problem is, if you say 'satanism' to someone, they will most likely have made up their mind about it before you can explain anything about it.

Yeah it was established by Anton LeVey in the 60s I think. But whether its classed as a Religion is I think by a certain number of people on the census who say it is their religion. So if enough people are open to being Satanists then it is classed as a world relgion.

Well, the CIA Factbook contains an accurate description of Satanism (as in LaVey's Church of Satan) so it's recognised to a degree in America. Religion being something of a hobby of mine, I own LaVey's The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Rituals, it's an interesting philosophy.

I always thought the "world religions" were Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism - that is, the Big Six.

On the bbc news site the other day the british navy has accepted a crew member who's faith is satanism, he's permittied to practice and celebrate his faith the same as any other person.
So I guess now all other minority religions should get the same acceptance and respect.

Yeah, I read about that. I think that it is unfortunate that people think that because Satan is often depicted as the evil guy, it makes all satanists evil, which is totally not true.

I've just re-read this after writing and I'm not sure it quite fits but I wanted my pennies worth sorry wink.gif I'm still sick and not thinking too straight but I think its pretty linear- May need a re-do nest week (or I could be lynched?) Didnt realise how long it was either, sorry unsure.gif

1) I love the diversity of Paganism (and by extension some forms of witchcraft) - I've studied so much of it historically with dashes into contemporary and its had me very impressed while quite unnerved at the same time.

2) Paganism I dont think, can be classed as a 'major' world religion mainly due to the disparity within the generic name. Like MrTeapot said- 10 Pagans, 11 different answers, or more. But there are disparities in the big 6 too. Its really just a matter of 'unified' numbers. Also, maybe the lack of some definate joint structural network if not an institution. I know this barks against the right to individual expression/ will to practice as one sees fit, but with all the followers, books, sites, groups and federations all seeing different myriad rainbows, who speaks for Paganism?
The big 6 have unifying laws for followers to take up and live by in their daily lives. Written texts, tomes and scriptures. Buildings, figureheads. They have humans hard at work through whatever means, divine or no, ruling the roost until the day we supposedly find out whats next (or not).
Three of these six spawn from human differences on historical figures and interpretations. Hell, their branches are so divided how many different ways? You really have to be on the ball to keep up, but at the same time they're unified. Two use the much more ancient/long lived/ingrained beliefs of/in multi pantheons; depending on the regions diversity you see different Deities and stresses, that at one point were the only way to explain something. For all five though the added argument now rages over whether they now explain it still, or just fill the gaps.
Buddhism I'm not sure about to be honest outside of small facts, but isn't a large part of the belief structure bettering oneself and helping others while learning on a path to enlightenment? All at heart have the same root rule(s) adopted by most, if not all Pagans.
The way I understand it, is that for the most part, Wiccanism/Paganism's main 'law' is the fundamental respect of all living things and the views of others. It is the basis of basic human common decency.
Trouble is, that basic is up for interpretation; and no mater where said rules or laws come from, human hands wrote them down and used them for their own means. The double edged blade. Too many rules or too much control or not enough and confusion. Unifying body versus free will.
Personally I'd say all have something to offer and without the 'Big 6' AS WELL AS the squibilion others we'd be much poorer.
