Hi all,

It's that time of year again, so here's the new Halloween special:

http://www.matazone.co.uk/animpages/the_ba...ation_2004.html

I'm really happy with it, I think it works just as I'd hoped.

Have fun!

The music was really atmospheric, I liked it and I thought the animation style was great. smile.gif

Other than that, it was a little bit too simplistic for me.

I barely noticed the sound, think there might be a volume issue with it since everything else seems fine (and I havent adjusted my volume or anything).

The animation itself was cool, if a little on the short and simple side.

Expectations fulfilled!

I also barely noticed the sound and agree with Moop that there might be a volume issue, or maybe my computer sound has turned itself down and I haven't noticed unsure.gif

But congratulations Mata! smile.gif

I could hear a faint sound in the background, like a distant heart beat or slow breath which gave it lots of atmosphere I think. Thought the Babysitter was going to be the evil one. Damn those kids are freaky.

Thanks for the good wishes with the PhD!

I was trying to find a balance between not rushing through the story and lingering too long on images, so if it seems to go a little fast then my apologies, you obviously have superior attention spans! biggrin.gif

I've uploaded a new version with the music a few times louder. I guess it was set rather quiet for the average user. Thanks for pointing that out!

That was sick, twisted, demented and creepy. I loved it.

Those kids' faces made me cringe. The music made my skin crawl and the overall plot made me want to run and cower into bed.

In other words, awesome job, Mata. You did well.

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn't watch the creepier animations when I've gotten only four hours of sleep in the past 48 hours...

I swear if you play it in time with The Wizard of Oz then it tells the story. Though you might need acid.

It must have taken you ages to do the actual animation like that though. It looks hand drawn or painted, or with MAD MSPAINT SKILLZ!!!11

I watched it again now you've upped the volume and that music is seriously creepy! smile.gif And I love the hand drawn quality of it.

*Shudders* Now I have the full effect with the music, *shudders again* Simple, effective.

Did you do the evil whispers while bearing down over the couch too? I found that the most shuddery part.

Yep, the whispering was me too. I upped the pitch a bit to get a more child-like tone and found a piece of poetry that seemed suitable in a rather odd quasi-religious book that I have. It was H旦lderlin's Elegy, in case anyone's interested. I can't seem to find a copy of it on the web so I might type it out at some point.

OK, normally I'm not one to be confused, but what the hell is that meant to be about?

I've seen alot of weird animations... with no meaning at all (if you want to check out Fat-Pie then you'll know what I mean) but this seems like one where you need to know what's going on...

No offense...

Or criticism...

I think the animation speaks for itself, Jimmi. I mean, we see what's impartant and we get it. Everything else is just details.

There is a lot of ambiguity in it, but essentially the point is that in a peaceful looking bit of suburbia two small children are doing something evil.

It leaves the questions:

What exactly are they doing? Are they replacing people with demonic doubles or are they casting some sort of spell on them?

Are the parents in on it, or are they victims of the spell too?

Was the babysitter invited there specifically so that they could cast the spell on her? And who invited her?

Why is all this happening?

While watching the animation it is at first unclear who is going to be the evil one, will it be the strangely pale children or the babysitter in the shadowy hood? When the spell has been cast it is assumed that the babysitter will vanish, but then she's waving goodbye to the family the next day, so what has happened, was it a nightmare she was having? But then you see the same rictus grin that the children had and it is clear that something has changed in her... But what was it? Also it retrospectively makes the smiles of the parents seem more sinister.

Like I say, the central tale itself was simple: spell cast on babysitter, she's somehow affected by it. The questions raised by it are what makes it spooky.

There you go. How's that for destroying the mystique of the story-telling process...

Never seen Finding Forester I guess
Stars Sean Connery
A famous author who only wrote one book that became a classic and he becomes a reckloose, if found in Brooklyn by an aspiring writer highschool basketball playing male.

When Connery, the author, is asked why he wrote only one book says something along these lines
"They take your work and start interpate it and try to make it their own, while completely missing the whole point."

Hell that's what English classes here in the States teach us, to interupt others' works so get used to it or get out

William Gibson uses the term 'apophenia'. He says that it is the act of finding patterns where there are none. This is his usual reponse to people like me who point out that he has essentially been making a consistent point about religion (for example) in all his books. It's a way of saying 'It's not really there, you're reading too much into it!'

I'm of the opinion more in line with the death of the author argument, written by Roland Barthes, that suggests that the author of a piece is actually the reader, because they bring whole new meanings to every word that the writer could never have intended. I don't go with it fully, but I suspect that there are always more things in a text than the author meant to put there, so deeper reading is often productive.

I try to put some layering of intent in my animations (possibly with the exception of the Mittens ones) and so I generally think that they can stand up to a fair level of interogation before revealing things that I did not intentionally put in there, but no doubt such things do exist.

Animation is a wonderful thing to analyse, because everything that you see is intentional. It's not like film, where the person wandering in the background wearing a red jacket might just happen to have been an extra; in animation that person would have been drawn in that place for a reason.
