This is a special 'thank you' to the handful of people who donated while this site has been offline.

Between what you've donated and the things I'm selling on eBay I've just about covered the next year's hosting, so thanks again.

While I'm at it, there's a day left on the eBay auctions:

It is good that people donate, coz it means we can all still post here, without Mata resorting to eating dirt and drinking rain water. *nods* smile.gif

I would have done more man, but the exchange rate is killer!

But me and Missy had a good idea to translate the cost of running this thing. Is there anyway you can PM me a est. of how much this thing costs you? Just a idea of the cost, we dont want to get all up in your buisness or anything.

Right, well, here's a rundown of the last 18 months of Matazone finances plus a few brief details:

Nov/Dec 2003: I did a load of work for a couple of media outlets and got £6500. At the time I only had a couple of hundred pounds left, so this immediately goes into paying for my rent and food.

Feb 2004: hosting costs £1500. The host was rock solid and provided good support. I then use the next six or seven months of T-shirt sales and donations to try and recoup this expenditure so I can still pay the rent.

Six months ago-ish: I finally close my T-shirt shop in preparation for the new merchandise contract with Blue Banana. At that point I have £3000 pounds left.

Since then I've had income from the royalties on the merchandise + selling stuff on eBay totalling around £1000.

It costs me around £750 to live each month, and I pay myself £650. Bear in mind that the average yearly income in the UK is supposed to be £26,151 (that's £2179.25 per month, source http://www.nuj.org.uk/inner.php?docid=840 ). If you do the maths, then you'll see that for the last month I've been calling in web-design debts to pay the rent!

Now, clearly I wasn't going to be able to afford the new hosting bill from my old provider, and while I do like having a stable server I also like having a place to live. I'm also quite fond of food occasionally. I looked at US hosting prices and found that due to the terrible value of the dollar and the fierce competition in the US hosting market that I could get a package that allowed for expansion of the site for around £120 with webhostingboy.com . What I didn't know at the time was that they provide terrible hosting.

After the last month it got to the point where I couldn't put up with the service any more so I bought a new hosting package, which actually cost less, around £90 (I've got a larger package than they usually offer and than I can currently afford because I've agreed to have a banner for their hosting on my menu pages), and so far seems to be far more professionally run. Unfortunately that investment represents approximately half of my total wealth at this time. In the last two months I've spent more on hosting than my income during that time from royalities.

In theory, later this month I should be getting almost enough to pay the rent from the merchandise royalties, because it is finally getting into enough shops for this to become realistic. I've also been told though that next month might be a bit sparse. Apparently in May I should finally be getting enough money to live off.

So, between the donations and the sales from eBay (most of the items on there are ending today, BTW) I should be able to cover the outlay for the hosting on the site, but without much left over.

... And that is the rather dire state of current Matazone finances!

You did ask! wink.gif

EDIT: BTW, I've not told you this to make it a sob-story, I just wanted to explain why I'm struggling to pay for the site when the hosting packages are so cheap. When it looks like I'm going to be set to run without the need for donations I'll take the page down, but until I'm sure that I can be secure in my own income then it'll stay.

EDIT2: I'm not sure how much of the bandwidth is used specifically by the forums, but the actual size of the forums on the server is around two thirds of the total size of the site.

Time to enforce a spam tax, methinks
(that'll cut my posts by half smile.gif)

It is interesting to see the financial side of the site. It sounds like one of those vicious circles, where you need more visitors in order to encourage more merchandise sales, but that also means more bandwidth, which means larger hosting packages which means needing more visitors... etc.

I am currently supremely annoyed, because I missed the auction on your painting, Mata. I had a work-related emergency which meant having to give up my day off. I got back ten minutes after the auction end. Very annoying, especially after having missed your last art auction in a very similar way. Ho hum.

Today's lesson: turn off your mobile phone during your day off.

You spend approx 3289.00 (US Dollars) on this forum in 6 months. Since you also spend arse loads of time working on this we will round that up to 3500.00, cause time is money!

There are 255,165 posts on this board and the board is 2 years old. Since we are working with your last 6 months income we will divide the total number of posts by 4. This will give us a rough average of 6 months of posts. That comes to 63791 est. posts per 6 months. Divide that by your 3500.00 spent comes to a total of 0.05 Cents or 0.0259890 GBP per post.

So take your post count, find your 6 months post average and multiply it by 0.05 and that is how much you owe Mata.

Ooo, spam tax evil.gif

The paintings are a nice way to earn a little extra money while not sacrificing my soul to rampant commercialism (such as advertising butter or switch cards, not that I blame Jonti and Joel for doing this, I suspect it's left them minted), so there will be more in the future.

Yes, running a site like this is a bit of a catch 22, but I think I'm at the bottom of a money curve at the moment. Hopefully in a couple of months it will turn back up and I'll be doing okay, making things I want, running the site I want; I'll have the hits _and_ still have my morals left at the end of it all. Bonus.

...Anyway, yes, there will be more paintings.

Rav, that's a lovely thought, but I know that not everyone has the finacial capacity to either send or afford to donate. Nobody owes me anything, I put this place here out of my own freewill. Of course, it is lovely when people do donate, but I certainly don't expect it.

That is the idea Missy and I had, create a spam tax. We used to have cussing jars when I was a kid. If you cussed or did something bad you had to put a dollar in the jar. At the end of the year we went on vacation. I say we do the same thing, but you go on vacation.. or actually have somewhere to live that isn’t a cardboard box.

I know.. hopfully this wil let them know how much work you put into this thing. And maybe they will cut down on the spam a little bit to smile.gif . I know that I often take for granted the amount of work you put into this place.

According to my calculations, I owe Mata a bit less than 38p.

Tell you what, I'll buy him a pint next time I see him, that ought to put me in credit for a couple of years...

Hmm, let's see...

A year is 365 days, so six months is 183 days.

According to my profile, I have 7.9 posts per day.

183 times 7.9 is 1445.7 posts in six months, on average.

Ravein calculates the cost at 0.0259890 pence per post.

0.0259890 times 1445.7 equals 37.5722973 pence.

Anything wrong with my maths?

Let's see now. Including this post, I have made 898 posts. I joined late February '03. So I'll just round it to two whole years. So, in two years I've made 898 posts. That's 224.5 posts every 6 months. At a cost of 0.0259890p per post, that means I owe Mata the grand total oooooof...

5.8345305p

I'm generous... I'll round that up to 6p.

*digs deep*

EDIT: For more accuracy, I shall now follow CB's formula, as above.

1.2 posts per day.
183days x 1.2posts = 219.6 posts every 6 months

0.0259890p * 219.6 = 5.7071844
So that's actually less! But I'll still round up to 6p biggrin.gif

If we're really going to work on this kind of theory I prefer the analogy of street entertainment (which was, after all, what I was doing to pay for food when I started The Other Side).

I figure that if you watch a person perform for quarter of an hour then you'd be rude not to give him/her a pound at the end of it. So, now what you do is calculate the amount of my animations that you've watched, plus the amount of time that you've spent on my forums, work it out in multiples of fifteen minutes and that's how many pounds you owe me biggrin.gif

I suspect Swift would have a field-day with modern culture, but personally I'm not in any great hurry to put his modest proposal into place.

Smart chap, that Swift.

According to Commie's formula I owe just over 31p. Which is pretty substantial considering I have been here less that 4 months.

183 x 9.8 = 1793.4

1793.4 x 0.0259890 = 46.6086726

46.6086726 x 2/3 = 31.07p (because I have only been here for 4 months)

32.025 cents, which is 16.6536p. Now, I've donated £10 to the forum in total, so instead, Mata owes me £9.833464! tongue.gif

No, I'd like to think that money went to a good cause... although it probably went to keeping Mata alive with food. That's a good enough cause, I've saved Mata's life!
