Today us English people got the results from the first A level exams of the year, which we sat back in January. For all you foreign-type-people (especially cand tongue.gif), A levels are a 2-year course from ages 16-18 (or thereabouts), which we take after compulsory schooling finishes. Compared to the previous exams they are hellish difficult - we have to learn how to do independant learning and we don't get told everything in class anymore and things.

So, I've been doing badly in biology. My teacher is nice, but not very good at teaching, so all the work I have is based on me spending hours on reading textbooks and doing practise papers. For the last couple of months I have been panicking, because I desperately need to pass this course to do my preferred degree at my preferred college. I have been predicted a D and everyone else in my bio class was ungraded or an E (U is a fail, and automatic retake, E is BAD)

... I queued for AGES to get my results paper.
... I went to the board with the grade boundries on it.
... Chem- fine, Maths- fine

... Biology - A biggrin.gif

I screamed biggrin.gif

*bounces*

Go you!

*hugs*

That is so cool! I'm dead proud of you! I wish I could go back and redo my A levels just so that I can actually do the work properly and not fail them all!

I'm seriously so happy for you, I know how hard it is and how much work you put into it!

*more hugs and bouncing*

Woohoo! That's fantastic!

It's great when things catch you by surprise. When I got a first for my degree I had to go back and check the board three times, then use a piece of paper to make sure that I was reading along the right line biggrin.gif

Groncatuashuns.

Predicted grades are designed to scare you into working. That's my theory. Me and my buddy Pete were predicted an E or a fail in D&T (all those many years ago), and we got As.

One in the eye for the head of department, who hated us. Mind you, Pete did set the place on fire once. And between the two of us, I think we broke more tooling that everybody else put together.

Woo, go you, you sly devil, you. How many times can I say you to you in a paragraph addressed to you? Yes, you.

Well, I got an E in Physics, my only January module.. Not so pleased with that. Then again, I just got a B in my Computing mock. My teacher was impressed because I have an attendance of about 20% (chronic illness yada yada), and I'm above the median in my class. *jiggles victoriously* Just have to hope I can pull it through on everything.

JERUSALEM, Israel (AP) - In response to Israel's denial of water to the West Bank, HAMAS released three cheetahs in West Jerusalem, where they went on a killing spree, mauling four Jews and injuring thirteen.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) - Following a cheetah attack on West Jerusalem perpetrated by the majority HAMAS party, the Israeli Air Force retaliated by detonating twenty kiloton nuclear devices over Gaza City, Jenin, Nablus, Rafah, and Ramallah.

ASHDOD, Israel (AP) - As a result of the atomic bombings of five Palestinian cities, a 50-foot tall reptile has woken from its million-year slumber in the Mediterranean Sea. The monster has made landfall at Ashdod and obliterated the city. Eyewitnesses report that the monster left the destroyed city heading southeast.

Congrats to Wytukaze on the B, that's really good going if you've had problems getting to the lessons!

I got B,C, D, and E for my A-levels. At some point I might bung myself in for an easy one to get the full range. I hear general studies is a good choice, I could do it in web-design! smile.gif

Good luck smile.gif Do lots of practise papers tongue.gif I hate to say it, but I get the feeling they aren't interested in how much you know, they're interested in how well you express it.

That's pretty much spot on. Eloquence is often more important than content. It sounds wrong, but if you know everything and can't express yourself then that's a problem, but if you know a little and can explain it perfectly then that's a good start. (Which is one of the reasons that I ask people to write to a reasonable level of grammar and punctuation on here - ideas are pointless if your expression is flawed.)

Can you not get it remarked?

That's really evil, are they allowed to move grade boundaries just like that?

Remarking costs the school money, and they will only do it if there is a good reason. Besides, remarking is only actually recounting, so unless the examiner was incapable of basic arithmatic, it's unlikely to increase the marks. On the plus side, being two marks below the grade boundary means you need (roughly) one mark above in the next two modules, so it isn't going to make too much difference in the long run.

Easy for you to say, Mr A-in-everything tongue.gif

Without meaning to whinge, I'm not a genuis. An A means a lot, and they took it away, so whilst my head knows it doesnt make a difference, my confidence, happiness and calmness are kinda shot.

Also, Whitney deicded that I "must have cheated somehow to get an A, otherwise, hows could I have done it?" She's gonna have a field day on wednesday.

Hmm, fair enough. I guess my school was weird... they would send off loads of papers for remarking.

*hugs*

You still rock! A B is awesome too! Remember that a D is the 'average' grade for most A level subjects!

If it helps GA, my average A-level is between a C and a D, but I went on to get a first at degree level and now I'm doing a PhD. You've got a B, which is equal to the best that I ever did at A-level, and you were very close to an A, which is probably better than I did. I don't blame you for feeling deprived about this, I would too, but there are still bigger things in the future that will make these feel insignificant when you get to them.
