I look up to Claude Debussy because he was an amazing composer and I love playing and listening to all his stuff.

I also look up to my piano teacher because she can play the piano really scarily well and she's such a kind, clever person.

And those on ladders.

But not the top step. It's just there as a joke, you're not actually supposed to use it. So clearly anyone on it is not worth looking up at.

Seriously though? I'm given to hero worship of Thoreau, and Blake, assorted artists (Chuck Close makes me cry at night), and african swallows with coconuts. Provided they are standing on ladders at the time.

I have a tendency to look up to fictional characters, such as ones in books, which seems a little odd, but it's not like I do it on purpose. I also look up to some strangers, even though I mat only have seen them walk down the street once. A few friends in particular, and muttermuttermutter (happy now cand?)
As for real life, I tend to look at the floor, so people on ladders are just two slats of metal to me.

I didn't know that about Danny Elfman... He's one of my favourite composers as is Claude Debussy ^.^ I like to play his stuff too.

I look up to (well, tall people, duh) uhm, Franz Liszt. People with large hands (because they can play piano better). Ballerinas, contortionists, those who speak 4 languages fluently or more, anyone who can cook really well.

And strippers. ^.^

A'ight, a'ight. If you want my real list o' people that i look up to, here you go:

Dante (the poet! I'm not that much a fanboy!)
Pope (the poet)
Milton (guess who! yup! a poet!)
Mozart (decidedly not a poet)
Bach
Douglas Adams
John Popper
Mr. Claeys
Mr. K
Mr. Ferrara

The last three are particularly good teachers of mine.

Danny Elfman is a god. In a million years I can only hope to be as good a musician and composer as he is.

Igor Stravinsky, for the way he broke the boundries of music in his time.

Tarja Turunen and Christina Scabbia, Bruce Dickinson and Sully Erna. They have such incredible stage presence and personality, and they all sing like angels, which I'm working on. Plus they all happen to be gorgeous. *mutters darkly*

Alanna the Lioness, in the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce. I don't know why, she's just so determined to do the right thing and she works hard at things... or something. I like her. Even though she's not real.

The partnership between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, because, let's face it, who doesn't? tongue.gif

Apparantly my piano teachers' piano teacher was tauht by Liszt...

I think that I missed out Chopin. He was a true genius. Especially his Revolutionary Etude, it's so beautifully fascinating!

I also look up to my dad because he is very fair and logical, although, come to think of it, not all the time...

So many Elfman fans... I personally prefer John Williams. And to GA, I like Tchaikocsky more than Stravinski.

Imaginative People.

Like Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker and the grandaddy of all that is good himself, the original Mr JT: JRR Tolkein.

On a not-so-famous level, there's people like The Neville over at b3ta, and of course, the reason we're all here: Mata*.

Given that I spend every waking second listening to music, and would rather have a giant CD collection than a giant something else, it suprises me that very few of my heroes are musicians. I mean, Connor Oberst and Ben Gibbard both deserve Nobel Excellence prizes for their lyrics, but these arent the people who spring to mind first.

*by 'here' I mean the forums. Despite some comments in the Mata rumour thread, Mata is not God, nor even the man-whore father of us all.

My father. He works 80+ hours a week. A man with tremendous will power, too.
Plus he's from Texas and he has a cool accent.

I suppose I "look up" to a great variety of people for their achievements, but I can never narrow it down when someone asks me for a role model. Apparently my teachers all found it depressing when I tried to state that I didn't have a role model, but I tend to find values I honor within many people and try to integrate them into my personality. *shrug* Not that I don't look up to people, though.

I'm not sure if I actually have a role model.

I quite like Kurt Vonnegut (the author), there are a few people on the forums that I wish I could be more like, a former professor of mine seems to have it together, and my grade 8 teacher, when faced with the prospect of having a pretty nose or a functional nose chose function over form and I always admired him for that.

And after those two massively constructive additions to the thread...

There have been lots of people I've been inspired by. In the past they were mainly fictional:

King Arthur
Bruce Wayne
Agent Dale Cooper (from Twin Peaks)

I liked the way that they all had a code that they live by, and that they all had a side to them that understood that by understanding the contradictions in yourself you can grow to be a stronger person. That was something that was important to me.

These days it's more difficult to say:

Jim Henson (for being one of the most universal entertainers during my life so far)
William Gibson (for inspiring nearly everything in culture that I love and still writing brillant fiction after nearly 30 years)
Sham Bhangal (he writes books about Flash, and does so with great lucidity, which is a rare gift)
Lance Henrikson (I'm not sure why, but I think he's got great presence)
Angelina Jolie (for walking the line between commercialism and individuality and still keeping her morals, also for adopting when living in the Hollywood culture)
Drew Barrymore (for pulling herself back from the edge to have a second go at life, also for putting her money behind small projects to support upcoming artists)
Piet Mondrain (the painter, who pursued one idea brilliantly)

That'll do the for moment.

In no particular order:

My dad for being a hard worker who's willing to do anything to support his family.
Mick Foley for sacrificing and giving blood, sweat and tears to do what he loves for a living. He also married a wife who's way more attractive than he deserves.
Mata for being Mata.
Scooter Ward for overcoming drugs dispite everything that led him to drugs in the first place.
My 12th grade economics teacher for his steadfast beliefs in freedom.
The guy who stood in front of the tank during a protest in China for being brave like that.
Dimebag Darrel from Pantera and Skinny from Mushroomhead for their astounding amounts of humility.
My mom for her Faith in God.
Kevin Smith for being short and fat and having a career founded on bad words, sexual innuendoes and overanalyzing things. He also has a wife who's too hot for him.
Quentin Tarentino for giving all of us movie geeks a glimmer of hope.
The guy who wrote and directed Dazed and Confuzed and Slacker for inspiring me and Kevin Smith to make movies for a living.
Samuel L. Jackson for his tremendous acting ability.
John Lithgow for his tremendous acting ability.
Ice-T for being a legitimate badass, yet humble at the same time.
George Carlin for his intelligent, strangely heartwarming cynicism.
Bam Margera for having so many talents.
Stan "The Man" Lee and Jack "The King" Kirby for creating Spider-Man, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four among others.
Martin Luther King, Jr. for legitimately believing in equality among all people.
Jon Davis from Korn for overcoming everything he did in the manner that he did.
Clive Barker for being such a handsome chap at his age. Oh, and he also wrote The Hellbound Heart (among many other greats) and writing and directing Hellraiser.
My brother Rick for being so intelligent and well-rounded and having such a good head on his shoulders. I also commend him for being in a relationship for over three years.
Anyone who isn't afraid to cry.
Anyone who's ever punched someone in the face for saying "boys don't cry."
My friend "Sweet" Brooks and Joe Frantz for being professionals, being way too good and being twins separated at birth.

There's probably more, but these cats are the ones that stand out in my mind.
