Say it ain't so!

Apparently there's lots of good things being said about the movie, and Peter Chung is fantastic, but I feel the same as a person on the IMDB boards:

QUOTE
Charlize Theron is a horrible choice for this role. I saw the poster for the movie in a theater today, pointed, screamed, and told my boyfriend that we were seeing it. When I checked the official site and saw that it was live action, I wasn't happy but I could deal with it. Until I saw Charlize. Then I just wanted to slap her through the computer screen.

If there were gods of film making then I'd be praying to them for this to not be rubbish. I'd probably add in a bit about, the unrelated film, 'Ultraviolet' too, which I'm excited about but I suspect is going to have great action but otherwise be rubbish.

Um. Are you really that suprised? Aeon Flux is hardly mainstream source material. It's dark as **** and twice as dirty.

In order to make that palatable to movie-going audiences the world over (and most importantly, America), you need a gorgeous blonde with big tits. Because everyone likes that, eh?

Her hair is dyed black, and I can't say I'd noticed her chest either way... But anyway, it does make you wonder why they even decided to do it though. The material is pretty damn odd at the best of times, and finishing an episode with a child getting his arms amputated isn't exactly the obvious sort of thing that mainstream movie goers are looking for.

Still, they made it for $55m, which is comparatively extremely cheap for a big Hollywood movie, so I guess they figure they'll get their return pretty much whatever they do.

Alright, the point about the hair I take.
Clicky clicky

The boobs are a fair point though. Just once, it would be nice to see a 'fittingly attractive' woman in a role, rather than a drop-dead gorgeous bird wearing baggy clothes.

She is usually blonde, just not in this movie. It does seem quite an unlikely fit though:

You do get normal-looking women in films, but it's usually in independent cinema, like 'Sideways'. You're not likely to get someone who looks a bit more human in the part, such as Sarah Clarke (Nina from the TV series '24'). If you're going to have a woman as the main character in an action movie you need to make her appeal to men, the main target audience.

Aeon was always sexy but in a non-mainstream way (the outfit speaks for itself http://www.gremlins.com/mmp3/img0057.jpg ). I suspect that lots of the SM stuff isn't going to make the film either! It does make me wonder exactly what _will_ be left from the original series.

See, that's just it, I think Nina 24 would have been a great great choice. She's got that deadpan delivery going on - she can do 'evil' when needs be, and she's even got more of a correct figure (if my recollection of the cartoons are anything to go by).

And why does the woman have to appeal to men through virtue of having appeared in perfume commercials? Why? You'd have thunk that for 55 million (i.e. a pittance in Hollywood), there'd be more creative freedom.

Oh well.

I am just happy they made it... however I many not be happy after I see it.
It is a little dark for most movie views, however I think that the main audience will know that before they ever go to see it. I just pray that Peter Chung keeps creative control over the film. I am not too worried about Charlize Theron. She is actually a pretty good actress. She was spot on in Monster and is normally a very convincing actress.

Besides, from looking at the pics from the film, it seems they tried to stay true to Aeon's gritty feel. It doesnt have that dirty glam look from Tomb Raider/Electra/X-men/*insert name here*.

I remain hopeful-but-unconvinced. I agree that Theron can be a fantastic actress who is capable of pulling out a great performance, but maybe that's one of the things that worries me... She might be too serious an actress to take such a silly-seeming role seriously. If you take a film like Equilibrium then you have a perfect example: it only really works because Christian Bale puts in a huge amount of effort into a very serious and intense performance, despite the possibility for the silliness of the whole thing.

I think Equilibrium has also shown Hollywood that it can get a good return on relatively cheap sci-fi films if the ideas are there. I hope that this hasn't set a dangerous precedent. (Pitch Black would be another example of this.)

Am I the only person who thinks it looks like they've dressed up Theron with a pair of tights on her arms?

yeah.. looks like they did not blow the budget on wardrobe. I have seen better outfits from the DragonCon guys!

I see what you are saying about the her being to serious. Aeon can be so whispy and real. That was one of the things that made all the dark subject matter okay. I just really want it to work! It is my fav animations. I still have not recovered from what they did to the Hulk, I can't take another heartbreak!! laugh.gif rolleyes.gif

You actually watched The Hulk? I have wondered before, but now you've just confirmed that you're a masochist! biggrin.gif

hahahaha.. No I watched 5 mins of the hulk and then promptly tossed the dvd in disgust. It was like watching a train wreck, you didn’t want to watch but it was so bad you had to. God it was just... rancid.
