My dear Matazonians, I have a difficult issue here on the eve of Goth Day* (friday the thirteenth). Having come quite far in the planning, I realized to my shock and chagrin that I have no clue what goths wear on their feet! Quelle horreur!

We do have goths here, but all I can recall of their shoes were swishes of large black pants. Curses to me and my distractability when presented with eyeliner!

So I present this poll to you wiser and more gothy among us. Which shoes are the gothiest?

*goth day is a joyous celebration on every Friday the thirteenth characterized by black clothing, nails and eyeliner. Lots and lots of eyeliner. We also write very bad poetry and recite it in monotone. **

**not intended to offend

At the risk of sounding like something of a spoilsport none of the options strike me as being particularly gothy. The riding boots may just creep in with appropriate clothing, but Cons are right out!

Just as I feared *is not particularly gothy*. What might you suggest?

Have a crack with the most hideously sparkly shoes you have to hand. One gothesque chap I know swears by his silver lizardskin shoes. The rest of us swear at his silver lizardskin shoes. tongue.gif One of the older terms used to describe goths was non-conformists, which gives the hint that you can qualify simply by being an awkward so and so.

Ahhhhh that sort of goth. I'm afraid I meant the more run-of-the-mill angst/teen/marilyn manson shirt type goth. The all-black, my-soul-is-a-dark-hole type thing (not that anyone here is like that). I wear all kind of crazy stuff normally (lots of sequins/homemade shirts/thrift store finds) so Goth Day is going more towards a conventional subculture idea. If that makes any sense.

Well, for the traditionalist view you're looking for something big, black, and clompy. Para boots should be your yardstick.

I could probably borrow my brother's nazi boots. They're about twelve sizes too large, though--I'd have to tape them on.

...rendering this thread useless. Oh dear. (feel free to delete, I suppose)

Never fear, polls are malleable!

The boots being horrendously badly fitting can only be a good thing for the effect you're after.

I'm only concerned about stairs. Namely falling down them.

I'd have to go with either the ballet shoes or the riding boots, though, if you have big (baggy) enough trousers it probably doesn't matter all that much.

On a side note, this is probably the most Barry (Mr Fuzzy) has posted in weeks! feel honoured!! tongue.gif

Given that you're going for teen-angst-goth then you can probably get away with most of those options. I think that I'd feel guilty if you fell down the stairs, so I'll go for the riding boots, which are probably second best.

Calling upon my oodles of experience, I would stick with boots or the ballet shoes. Converse and such risk going outside your genre. The doc martens are a dangerous burst of color, but as they are dr. martens will work with certain outfits for a proper look. tongue.gif Falling down is not goh, so out go the nazi boots. *nod*

Para boots should indeed be on the menu for those marilyn manson gothlet types, ill-fitting is also part of the look your going for. Duct tape them to your legs if they are too troublesome.

or choose yourself, personal expression and all...

If you are going for true gothdom shouldn't you be aiming for quiet lurking type entries into rooms? The ballet shoes are my favourite as they cause little noise, can be hidden under HUGE trouser legs and can be worn until the following day without too much pain.

I agree with Ryn, the ballet shoes are most appropriate... also a touch non-conformist with the stereotype so you still have your own individual spin.

Good luck! biggrin.gif

Wow, people replied! blush.gif I wound up going with the riding boots, because apparently my brother has a little identity crisis when I borrow his clothes. He locked the boots in a drawer when I asked to borrow them....o.O. But it is of little matter, as the skirt I wore was very long and you could only see the tips, which are leather and square-looking.

In other news, Goth Day is easily the best holiday ever. I put eyeliner on boys and made them pretty! I may even find the strength in my poor little angsty soul to post pictures, but don't hold your breath.

(as a side note: Cath has the same shoes as me! Woo! *is suddenly is a very good mood*)

So to keep this thread alive, as I breathed life into it and would feel guilty if it languished, did anyone else go goth/do anything special on this lovely Friday the thirteenth?

I got very drunk and contemplated mortality... Which is pretty goth, but I actually had a good reason for doing so, so I'm not sure if that counts.
