I don't understand why people are freaked out by clowns.

I only ever wanted to cry upon seeing a clown when it was wearing the same thing I was...only it was a clown and I was just me. In my regular clothes. *cries*

I hate clowns. That is the end of that. I think it's because they are so fake. I don't find them funny either. Their humour, if that, is pointless and just people doing silly things. Oh, and also, after seeing the film 'It', I was truely scarred for life. I couldn't go near drains for like a month and kept on seeing clowns in my garden.

anything that is paid to be happy must be scary.

And I have never seen any natural human being smile that much. It's just...creepy.

I'm a clown.

Tragick the Clown

I grew up on It, Killer Clowns from Outer Space and the Twisted Metal series. Though I don't listen to (or like) the Insane Clown Posse, I am aware of who they are. I know that John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer. I am well aware of the fact that clowns can be creepy.

I used to be scared of clowns who wear pancake makeup, huge painted-on smiles and and weird-colored wigs. Maybe that's why Tragick came to fruition in the manner that he did.

I have a friend who's a legitimate courophobiac. He couldn't watch the part in Scary Movie 2 where the clown attatcked the ambiguously gay guy. Normally, he's real chill about everything, but he couldn't take it.

And why is is all clowns are either happy and giddy and crap or all sad and down? That annoys me. What also gets to me is that clowns are portrayed as psychotic killers by alternative culture. If we had more realistic clowns, maybe they wouldn't be demonized by society.

My attempt is to be creepy in that good way, along with being realistically happy, legitimately depressed, nominally angry, sarcastic, emotional, artistic and everything a clown should be (to me at least). I have one cool joke, though: I ask if the audience was expecting me to do balloon animals. I then reach into the jacket and pull out a pump and a string balloon. I blow it up and tie it up, give it to someone and say, "Here. It's a knot."

Okay, maybe my opinion is skewed being a clown and knowing clowns, but I will say that I don't like most other clowns, be they crazy, uppity, melencholy, homicidal or any of that crap. GOD DAMN they annoy me sometimes.

I see.... so really clowns can be scary to those with a fear of men I makeup... or the more likely, Scared of Evil looking men/women who smile allot. I think thatís it. If the clown is sad you donít fear it you kind of pity it a bit.... maybe. But if itís smiling then itís almost.... plotting... Anyway evil or not, clowns scare the hell out of me....

Oh, yeah. People who are that happy normally disturb me. However I will agree that the makeup for some reason or another wants me to take the person out back and beat him/her with a hose. There is somethink kind of creepy about it. People really aren't made to be that happy.

My God. I'm turning against my own kind. tongue.gif

I think it's that they're always happy, no matter what. And when the smile is painted on but the person isn't smiling... *shivers* I also think that clowns are scary because you never know what they're thinking because they have a kind of mask on. I quite like the idea of sad clowns though, although it creeps me out a lot.

I thing both of you make good points... but why does someone smiling really make that difference? I mean when you see your friends smiling you donít wet yourself and woddle away... or maybe you do. But thatís beside the point. Maybe itís that they interact with you even though you have never seen them before.
this picture for example.

The kid looks like hes trying to get away.... but can't.... Dun Dun DUN!

Peaple always say this... relitives or not. "Dont talk to strangers.... oh before i forget, here is a weird man we found randomly. give'm a cuddle"

Well, it's not that they're smiling. I mean, when my friends smile, they smile because they find something good or funny. But clowns just.. smile. Because they have to. They block out all emotion and just show you that they're happy, even if they're not. That's what creeps me out. It's all one big lie...

I find most clown humor offensive on the basis of most adults thinking the only way to amuse kids is to have adults being stupid, which gives children no credability and is just generally offensive. Noone thinks the only way to amuse christians is to burn up witches and then have them run at you. why wouls you insult the inteligence of children the way that 99.99% of clowns do?

^this isn't as coherant as I'd like^

THough I presently forget the origin of the Klan, their present incarnation is an organization that supports white supremecy/empowerment. THey hold rallies, marches and hand out literature in major cities. They also burn crosses (I forget what it symbolizes) and misuse the Confederate flag to symbolize hatred instead of southern pride/heritage. Historically, they have lynched black people, but they also have issue with immigrants, Jews and homosexuals.

Something interesting, though, about clowns: THe Wringling Brothers' clown college is said to be the only free college in the world, but also the most difficult. Steve-O of Jackass, Wild Boys and Steve-O Vide-O fame graduated Wringling Brothers' clown college and can concievably get a job there if he wanted.

I'm sure that there are clowns that hate their jobs. I can see a clown drink to escape the pain that his/her career as a clown. I haven't met any clowns like that, but I'm sure they're out there.

I do! But no one suspects a giant purple dinosaur! Hahahahahahahahaha

How was that for your daily dose of random?

When I asked my sister why clowns scared her she said "It's the makeup, it covers their face so it's hard to tell what they really look like."
My mom said: "I think it's those big-a** feet they have, the red nose, and the freaky hair."
yes, the oddness runs in the family.

I've known a few clowns, and when they were not performing they were generally depressed. That's either the sign of a person who _really_ likes their job, or just that being paid to be happy is not good for the mind.

I went to a circus about eight years ago, and previously didn't see the point of clowns, but... I'm a little ashamed to admit this... The clowns were really funny. Not just a little bit funny, they were real laugh-out-loud funny. I know. It surprised the hell out of me! I think that perhaps people shouldn't knock clowns until they've seen a real circus clowns' performance live. It's just limp on television, but live is something completely different.

i see... but i guess when you compare

(the evil and twisted)

with the

(jolly and nice)

you begin to see why people have different views on clowns and what a clown is capable of doing to you.
What you were saying before about clowns at the circus. Clowns only come from the circus right? So how did the first image come accross? It baffles me so much.

Does anyone know the answer? Why ARE people scared of clowns!

The first portrayal of clowns annoys me. It's like they're trying to make clowns scary. Okay, I may be a hypocrite considering I liked It and my brother and I teamed as Sweet Tooth the clown and Minion the demon on Twisted Metal 2 all the time. It was different, though. The clown was supposed to be misleading as it's assumed that clowns are friendly and entertaining and what-not. Sweet Tooth just kicks ass.

I want to go to a circus, but no one save my little sister and her friends want to go (if I get my liscense back, maybe we can make it a bonding thing). I seriously want to go to the circus, especially since seeing Mata's post. To Hell with the lions and tightrope walkers; I want the clowns, dammit.

I'm sure the reason that the clown look came about was a general evolution from people just wearing basic makeup to show that he/she was a clown. As for people being scared of clowns, why are people scared of spiders or mice or something along those lines? I'm utterly terrified of spiders, but all I think about is where I put the Raid.

One can figure the present eruption of coulrophobia originated with John Wayne Gacy, Stephen King's It and the miserably acted yet strangely hilarious Killer Clowns from Outerspace. I had an ex who was TERRIFIED of clowns. It got to her when I sang a love song (and "Send in the Clowns" by Cold) onstage as Tragick. She got cool about it later in the night, though (since it's not a full-face thing, I figure).

THough I find it odd, I'm not suprised that some clowns are depressed when they aren't performing. I personally would get burned out if I had to be happy all the time.

THis is disturbing: I've seen clown porn before. I am not joking. You can't make that up. It's scary. I can't discribe it.

If I start a band with my friend Tim, I want to try to convince him to skin his head and don the name and image of Smokey (or Smoke-o) the Clown. Who knows? Maybe we could be featured on Celebrity Deathmatch squaring off with Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope from ICP.
