Uhm. Sorry, but I sincerely doubt that story.

Your member info says you're in California (well, "Calafornia," actually, but why be pedantic?). In the United States, employees who sell alcohol have to card if you look under the age of 27.

It's pretty unlikely that you looked that old on your 13th birthday. I'm nearly 24 and I still get carded here without fail, even by people who have known me personally since high school (but I look kind of young anyway...my boyfriend's parents thought I was 19!). When I used to sell alcohol, I ended up carding people as old as 35 because to me they looked about 25 or 26. That ended up just making their day, though. wink.gif

I could always be wrong, I suppose. It's just been my experience that places in the US tend to be pretty rigorous with carding. If they get caught serving alcohol to a minor, they're in for some SERIOUSLY bad fines (the employee who did it, as well as the company). It drove a pizza place near me out of business a couple of years ago, and they had a mini-chain of stores across the region (about 3-6..can't remember how many towns had them exactly). They all had to close when ONE of the stores served alcohol to a minor because the fines were too much for the owner to pay and still stay in business.

To be fair, I've been offered alcohol at restaurants (meaning the waiter was expecting me to order beer when my dad and his friends did) since I was about sixteen. On my eighteenth, I bought porn just for the Hell of it expecting to get carded and I didn't. These days, strangely, people rarely think I'm older than seventeen or eighteen unless I have a beard.

That said, I, too, find it unlikely that you'd be able to get into a bar and drink at thirteen, if for nothing else, the restrictions they put on businesses that Cand pointed out. And, as Pizza Guy pointed out, what the Hell would you be doing out drinking at your age anyway? What morally or mentally competant person of legal drinking age would take a thirteen-year-old to go out to a club to get hammered anyway?

EDIT: Great. My little sister turns thirteen in less than three years. Now all I can think about is creepy guys taking her to get smashed. Looks like I'm not getting any sleep tonight. Thanks.

No. It's not just that the minimum age is higher here...alcohol laws are just overall MUCH stricter in America. It was really weird for me over there only getting carded once.

Although I think there's a law that says your parents can give you alcohol as long as you're on their property...but I don't think that applies to being out in public. And that might not even be an actual law to begin with...I can't remember where I heard that.

Yeah, as far as I know, in England, you can have 1 glass of wine or a beer with a meal in a restaurant (not a food pub) if your parent or guardian is present and you are over 14. You can also drink alcohol in your own home if your parents are presnet if you are over 14. and of course you can buy alcohol if you are over 18, but most shops and pubs ask for ID if you look under 21.

My mum got ID'd to buy an 18 certificate DVD the other day...and I'm her 18 year old daughter. They looked so sheepish when I got my driving licence out to prove the point smile.gif but I digress.
Where I live it depends on the bar staff and the doormen, but it's quite strict. There used to be a pub that never served anyone older than 17 on a Friday and Saturday night, so that's no new story to me. Still it's scary though, but since the new management came in that's stopped. Now it's just White Lightning (that's cider if they don't have that brand in America) at extra strength in the park at nights. Wooo.
How many people here actually wanted to drink things they didn't enjoy just for the kudos of getting drunk when they were 14 or so?? I know I didn't, but I'm curious now.

Now did you just get into the bar at 13 or did you drink as well? I doubt that you drank as well, I can see the getting into a bar. I know from experience that the bars in Cali are very strict about selling alcohol. Most places don't give a rats @ss how old you look, they card you anyway.

On that same token I've been to a couple of bars that are also pool halls, and serve some food so they allow minors in, but they card at the bar. They like to play off that whole family atmosphere thing and so they let anyone in. Personally I'm thinking that this is probably what happened to you.

Gee, what a responsible brother you have. rolleyes.gif

Not only did he give a 13 year old alochol, he did so in public...where he could quite easily be caught and arrested. That's a really great role model you have there...

Hrm. Was that too sarcastic? >_> Anyway, how were we supposed to know this? You gave the impression in your original post that you got served at the bar.
