Ok, so I'm thinking about what I could wear to a Medieval Dinner as costume and thought 'Yeah how cool would it be to have a Crest/Familial Symbol to wear?' Unfotunately I have neither sad.gif but I have worn many over the years through Cadets and casual wear etc and so I figured I'd ask what the coolest crest would be for matazonians to wear if they were thrown back into the mists of chivalry and knighthood in a mysteeeeeEEEEEErious time experiment accident?

A tabard and shield emblazed with Mittens/Snowdrop? The outline of LGG to tell the world of your allegience? or, my personal tied favourites, the Thundercat symbol bold as brass on a battlefield banner or, of course, a big ol' yellow Smiley on black?
Who's gonna form the battle line (metephorical) and impose upon the enemy a masterful display of design caolour and fashionalbe accessories?

What are your thoughts folks and do any of the tatooed bods wear/see their tats as their crests? Telling the viewer who you are and what you stand for? Do you know your family crest/have one?

I think I might actually have a family crest...

Fari quac sentiat- to speak what he feels

Sometimes it is cool to have a family herritage- we don't have a big house in the country or anything, it's just pretty amazing to beable to trace back our family and what they have done- one of them was once going to make a type of monastary-style compound for gambling, orgies and other illegal things.biggrin.gif
Other times it is annoying, and the amount of people who can't spell my surname is ridiculous.

There was a guy reading a book on tartan this morning. Quite an interesting thing to overhear, the different clans and stuff, what they were famous for.

Did you know that just red and blue tartan was for milk sellers? Anyone with just red and blue in their tartan heratidge came from people who touched then sold milk from cows dangly bits?

My maternal grandfather was Scotish, so I have that heritage to call on if I want, there is a Mitchell tartan, I remember it being _very_ similar to the Blackwatch tartan, to the point my grandfather used to say the Mitchell tartan was Blackwatch.
However, seeing as I have my fathers name, I tend to relate to that heritage more...which I believe is French way back (like 1066 way back) and has a crest involving a greyhound. Not as cool as having a kilt though. tongue.gif

French or Norman? I find ancestry amazing, especially since it is very difficult to trace ancestry here because nobody's quite sure exactly where my family came from. The furthest back we can trace it here goes to before the American Revolution, and before that it was somewhere in England, but we're not sure where.

I think that a side of my family (cavell side) has a crest with three flying sheep on it or something. We've also got a massive family tree going all the way back to the 1600's. Unfortunately there is only one Cavell still alive and he is waay too old to have any babies and the name only runs as a middle name in any families now. So that stem is pretty much dead.

When we had to research our family crest last year, I think Mine was two golden Unicorn heads facing each other, with a silver chevron in the middle.... or it might have been the other way around.

Edit: I was right!

Nihil amanti durum - Nothing is hard for one who loves

I'm pretty sure it's Latin, although it could be Italian. It's a nice motto.

I should do some research on that...

I've got a personal motto, though.

I don't know about my family, although my dad was talking about adopting Si Hoc Legere Scis Nimium Eruditionis Habes as a family motto.

I do however have a personal motto, which is Nihil curo de ista tua stulta superstitione

Were are the unicorns on the crest you posted? Its all black and red.

Anyway, having posted this I'm still no closer to my own crest etc although I may have a lead from my sister who did some family tree cscrabbling so I'll see what I can get.

They're not facing each other like I thought they were, but they are there! I was close...kinda. laugh.gif

There is one near the bottom of the black square, and one at the point of the triangle-thing.
