Light guns are great. You point them at your TV, pull the trigger, and the TV tells your compubot which bit of the screen your gun was pointing at! Magic! I think that it's done with tiny trained gerbils taking notes of the co-ordinates and scurying down the wires to tell the machine where the gun was pointed, but I'm sure that there is a proper solution.

My main reason for asking is this: I love light gun games, but they don't work on 100Mhz televisions, which is the upcoming standard for TVs. Is this simply a processing problem, or does the technology simply not work beyond a 60Mhz refresh rate?

Like, dude, this is so blatently a conspiracy by the light gun and TV maker companies. They want your hard earned dough, innit. So like, they all got together and though 'jezze, we need to get more income for more alien experimantations [these companies so do kidnap innocent passing aliens and do experimentations on them to find the question], I know let's see where money can be made due to [blatently foreseen] inbuilt obsoletes'.

I'm telling you, man, that is so the truth because I've seen the light, and I know it all.

*looks you in the eye* Yeah, I know that too, but send me a cheque and I'll keep stum*

I dont know the answer but i would suggest that the refresh rate of the tv is probably something like the lights wavelength frequency and the poor gun gets very confuseled when it tries to read both the light its expecting and the flicker from your tv.
Just a guess.

Bit off topic, but isn't the refresh rate 60Hz in general as opposed to 60MHz?

It's mostly 50Hz in the UK, 60Hz in the other places like the US. It's all down to the frequency of electricity, mains at least. In case you didn't guess it's 50Hz in UK and 60 in the US, no idea why it's different, American's like to be different on these things. Even more off topic, that's why PAL works at 25fps and NTSC works at 30 (or 29.97 if we're being pedantic), again Americans like to be different.
Not knowing how a light gun works, I couldn't say why it doesn't, could speculate that they're designed to work on around 50-60Hz displays, 100Hz would be just too quick for it. Ever seen a video camera pointed at a TV or monitor? I'm guessing something similar happens with the light gun and can't see what you're pointing at.

Call me a big old cheat if you will, but I headed to Howstuffworks to find the answer. That should clear up the mystery of why they don't want to work with 100Hz.

I read the wikipedia article on this, but the howstuffworks one is better. It's all in the timing and because a 100hz timing is different from a 60hz timing a system designed for one won't work on the other. I guess the question then really is whether the photoelectric cells in the guns are sensitive/fast enough to pick up 100hz signals.

I had a physics teacher at GCSE level who spent about half an hour explaining how magnetic tapes worked to us. When he was finished he said 'but I don't believe it'. He was of the opinion that the sensitivity needed to make magnetic tapes work was beyond the technology involved. Having read about light guns I now know how he feels. Surely they can't possibly work like that? That's just silly!

I understand how to count in Binary, but still dont believe that that can make my computer do what it does!

When you get into programming it does strange things to your mind. When you're really in the zone you look at the world and no longer see analog reality, instead it's a complex series of 'if' statements.

Is that like that bit in the first Matrix movie when Neo was revived after being shot and saw everything as code?

You mean it's not all 'if...then' and 'do...while' ?
