So, I was searching the members, and I noticed that there are some people in the "Established Members" group rather than the usual "New Members". What is the difference between the two groups? How did we (I'm a member) become established?

That's so strange! It's just you, Cath, Cheesemoose, Elphaba2, IATB, JimiJimi, Little_Bear, Novander, Oscarhilton and Witless (yeah, I'm a little bored tonight) and I can't see anything on first glance which would single you out?

How, oh how, do we join this hallowed group? blink.gif

The member groups have been slightly rejigged to put a few small restrictions on freshly joined members, and hopefully cut down on the incidence of spammy new threads. The way I had to make it work has left all the existing members in this group, but as soon as they post the system automatically puts those who have been around for a bit in the Established Members group. I would have done this by hand, but I'm far too lazy to check all the SQL commands which would be needed to do it as a batch job. tongue.gif

Edit: Snuggs - by posting then you just did!

So what you are saying, is that all the people that have posted since you did this are Established Members?

Damn, I was hoping I had somehow got promoted.

After a fashion you have. It's just that, not very excitingly, you've been promoted to the normal set of permissions.

Basically we've come to the conclusion that it would be good if people had to join in with other threads for a little while before they can start making their own ones. Mr Fuzzy has been doing the technical wizardry to get this going so I'm not sure of the specific settings that he has gone for, but essentially it means that new members can only start a thread in introductions and creations. Thinking about it, maybe Personal Concerns would be a good idea too. Hm.

The point is that new members will get a better idea of what this place is like before they start making their own threads in the general-topic bits of the forum. This might mean that less people bother to remain around to become full members, but it will also hopefully mean that new threads are generally in the style of these forums more so than they may be currently.

Initial thought, best thing since sliced bread. But unfortuantly not every first thread is out of the forum style, first name to come to mind would be Witless and his first few posts which were great to read and really refreshing. Pro's still outway that minor con though, I think this will encourage a lot more lurking until ready too, which is never a bad thing.

Heh. Anyway, it seems like a good way to stop the pointless polls all over Daft from overenthusiatic newbies. Just a quick question, though. If you have just enough posts to be an established member (I don't know the magic number) and about, say, three quarters of your posts are spam in the Games area, are you still qualified to start useful threads? I tend to wonder pointless things like this a lot.
Thanks for pointing me here, Mata. This is only the second time I've poked into Site Faults. smile.gif

Lots of other forums have a games area that doesn't count towards total post count. They tend to implement such things when people get so excited about getting a certain number of posts that they constantly spam in stuff like Word Association.

It was just a thought. The new system seems like a good idea, so I don't think there's any real need to change it unless newbies turn in spamwhores so they can become established members. cool.gif Hopefully they'll be nice enough to learn the rules.

Heh. I used to do that, not to bump my post count but to see my name on the Today's Top Poster thing. And because I hated lord of darness.

But I've a question. Surfing the old forums and seeing the posts of members such as NummyNums and Dancing Hamster Guy, I noticed that their titles were "New Members." Does that mean that they could concievably come back? Not that that would particularly bother me, but I was just pondering.

They only switch over the next time that they post. Fuzzy could put through an SQL command to switch them all instantly, but he can't be bothered to work out the code and neither can I!
