So, while in IRC, I've been privy to learning new things about you guys over yonder. It's struck me that texting seems to be a very big thing in the UK. I have examples, but they aren't coming to mind.

Why is that? Do English people text more than they talk on the phone?

It's usually cheaper and more to the point. Plus we don't have to bother with annoying pleasantries that will last 10 minutes. "How are you? How's your father?" blah blah blah.

It means that you can think about what you're going to say first and not sound completely stupid. Or for people like me who stutter, it saves a lot of trouble and is much quicker.

Advantages to texting over phoning:

-Discretion, for example when informing your lover that you do indeed have crabs and the doctor has recomended that they get down to the STD clinic as soon as, whilst on the train home.

-Can be used like an electronic postit note. Event's; addresses; shoe sizes.

-Because sometimes you don't actually want to talk to the receiver, just inform them of summit.

-So you can have a 'mature' conversation with your 'friend' about the 'desert' you have planned to share with them, when in the company of people who would frown upon hearing such talk. Like your boss.

-To promote txt speak. tongue.gif

I have to agree with IATB, it does give you a chance to clearly and concisely tell someone summit. And it can be a bit cheaper depending on your tarrif, I think.

I've not had a phone for the last few months, but I would have to say that in the seven or so months I did have it about 80% of my credit went on texting.

Nothing beats a good natter on the phone, but texts have thier use.

Also because for the reciever it is more descrite. And by sending a text you aren't likely to interupt them from what they were doing as much as you would from a phone call.

Yeah, that's all well and good for you people who know how to read and write. But for us illiterates, its just fun to make pretty shapes. WHOO HOOO!

Also, texting is nice for those times when you have to tell someone something without giving them a chance to verbally respond. Like the time I texted my roommate that I had just set his bed on fire while he was sleeping. I didn't have to wake him up or listen to him screaming in pain. It was a win-win situation.

Texting is great if you feel like talking to someone at, say, 1:00 AM, because the ringing cell phone won't wake up their family.

There are also times when you just don't feel like speaking, too.

I have a bit of a problem with texting. To be able to say anything, I need to write about eight or nine text messages' worth of words. Even 'sorry, I can't make it to your party/wedding/bat mitsvą, I'm leaving the country' takes up about five of the blighters. Maybe it is because I'm not the sort of person who likes to be blunt and direct. Or maybe it is because, like as I do virtually vowelless languages, I just can't become to remove them from English smile.gif.

That being said, leaving a text message to someone whom I cannot phone is easier than the dreaded voice mail message, which are truly the font of all evil. Well, maybe that's a bit too dramatic. Make that the font of some evil.

I text a lot, but it's pretty much always to the same person. I'm on pay as you go, though, so it actually works out a lot cheaper in terms of actual conversation per time period to text. You *can't* send a blank text, you can spend fifteen minutes in contemplative silence whilst on a phone call. And my downfall is that I insist on using proper english, usually perfectly punctuated, so I end up going into the nth text before I've finished what I want to say. I think it still works out cheaper, though.

You can send blank texts, but normally it happens by accident...

I like texts, I get 120 free a month so it's cheaper for me to text during the day, I get 1000 off peak mins to landlines and other O2 users so I normally call after 7pm, unless it's something that it seems silly to call for...

I text much more than speak, because when I speak people can actually tell how disinterested I am. Also in texts I can ignore people yet when I'm on the phone I can't. Annoying things, people.

I agree. Ergo, The Travis can now have his cake and eat it biggrin.gif

The only trouble is with texting is when you are "talking" to someone for a while, and manage to use up £5 worth of texts in one evening.

Not that I have ever done that. Nope.

Two words back at you 'I do!'

Some one had phoned me which had unlocked the keypad and as it was in my bag and I'd not heard it ring it went nuts and sent messages and phoned people.

Psh. Amateurs. I've spent £15 in a day, and I've spent £80 in less than a month on more than one occasion.

...Which may not sound like much until you realise I only make around £150 a month dry.gif
