Hullo there idiot.

I see you hath stumbled upon my little board. It should be know as a warning that I am very depressed, driven to insanity by my "family". I also self-harm once in a while when my "brother" fights with me. But there are hardly any obvious reasons why I am like this, so I just whine about this crappy life of mine over and over again until they listen. But they don't. No-one cares. No-one ever does...

So, where were we? Ah, yes, I am new here and need somebody to help me through the unfamilarity, if that's even a word. I'm not that good a speller.

I hate this crappy life of mine so very much, why don't I end it all?

Answer that and be my friend.

It's one of the classic issues of being online: trust.

We've all had problems believing people online, and most of us will at least once have trusted someone who was lying. Equally, I think many of us will also have not believed someone who was telling the truth.

In this case we have a forum member whose style of writing conforms to a style that is frequently used as a parody of teen-angst. This does not mean that by definition that the person is automatically faking it, only that our suspicion is aroused.

This leads to the next main problem of online messaging: tone.

It is extremely difficult to judge the tone of writing. If you read the messages by 'Ihatethiscrappylifeofmine' in a tone of bored sarcasm then they seem like a parody, but if you read them in an earnest tone then you get a different view. The continued and relentless style of intense self-derision does suggest that the person either entirely lacks perspective on suffering or the slightest will to confront the issues facing them in a manner that is extremely unusual, or that they are taking the piss. The repeated use of 'But they don't. No-one cares. No-one ever does...' can be either mocking or tragic, depending on the tone.

The exact same problem faces the responses. While they are generally cautiously sympathetic, they are also asking to see something that doesn't conform to the sterotype of teen-angst. No-one actually fits this stereotype perfectly but most of us have experienced an element of it first-hand, either in ourselves or through our friends. When someone comes along who fits this so perfectly, doubts begin to surface. We were skeptical, and I think with fair reason, but we were also asking for the person to demonstrate that they were not simply taking the piss out of people who genuinely do suffer from their homelife and other conditions around them: such an attitude is unproductive for all concerned.

If you read out posts with the assumption that we had pre-judged 'Ihatethiscrappylifeofmine' then it will seem like we are mocking them, but I know that I was genuinely trying to ascertain if this was a real plea for help (of some sort), a person trying to get some attention, or a joke in bad-taste. Again, reading our posts is all about tone, and this is something that often depends on the approach taken by the reader as much as the author.

To use an extreme example: I think that the film 'Charlies Angels' is a fascinating discourse on the current state feminism, but I doubt the makers intended most of the details that I find the most interesting. I approach the film as an academic and I see things that weren't intended to be there. There's no harm in that but Snow_White, you can see things that we didn't intend in our posts, you are doing us a disservice if you believe that we didn't give 'Ihatethiscrappylifeofmine' the benefit of the doubt.
