Okay, I'm giving Google adverts a try. Please let me know your thoughts.

There are two main motivating factors in me doing this:

First, I'm massively skint and I'm having to restart temp employment to be able to survive. I really need this site to pay for itself and more. Getting a temp job does of course mean that I'm going to have very little time to animate.

Second, I'm curious to see what sort of adverts Google thinks the people on this site would be interested in!

Anyway, we'll see how they go.

So far the only Google ad I've gotten on every page I've gone to is asking me to donate to communities in hurricane affected states. *edit* Oho, there's some asking me to give to the Christian Children's Fund or to Alzheimer's research as well.

Seems to think we're the charitable type. Hmm. I'm sure it'll get more bizarre as time goes on.

Well, that's quite flattering isn't it?

I've picked banner sizes that won't disrupt past the level of the existing banners. Depending on the revenue (which depends on clicks and number of views in some arcane combination) I may consider replacing the existing banners... Possibly. I'll see how much Google pays up. Please don't just randomly click on the ads if you're not at all interested in them, or unless you really dislike the company: small businesses pay Google lots of money to advertise like this, and so I don't want their money wasted. That said, if someone annoying advertises on here then feel free to help me take their cash biggrin.gif

I got pregnancy ones while looking at Aislinn's thread and cigar ones right now.

Wonder if posting about cigars will just feed me more Google ads about cigars?

It is indeed flattering, but now it wants me to book all sorts of cruises and stuff. Hmmmmmm interesting.

In the intros thread where SPS was being oh so very modest *cough*, it offered me popcorn machines. How very strange.

Also, this wasn't a google ad, but one of the other ads just informed me that 1 in 5 children is sexually solicited online. It then told me "DON'T BELIEVE THE TYPE." In all caps, like that. Should I feel bad that it kind of made me giggle because of the horrible slogan?

Not at all, it's funny because anyone old enough to remember Public Enemy wouldn't be likely to be underage and solicited online!

"You don't need to be a steroid induced, blackbelt ultimate fighter to beat one in a street fight..." That's the best quote from the top-secret combat ad.
It's telling me to sign up for Hotmail now. When I saw the Columbia Mittens one, I had this odd mental image of Mittens the kitten destroying Columbia.

Is anyone else have occasional troubles with the loading times? I'm finding that now and then a page stalls while waiting for Google to get its arse in gear. I've not noticed a pattern yet to be able to report it.

I have noticed pages not loading, wasn't sure what was causing it, thought it might have been issues with the hosting...

My ad wants me to pay for "sitting" for my kitties...

...They're going to have to get Mr Creosote on that one for me to pay, trust me I've tried and they're virulent little buggers. ph34r.gif

"Relevant" Google ads make me smile. In a stalked kind of way.

I've put a different advert type on the side of the pages because it seems to be that that's the one slowing loading down. Hopefully this will prevent the page loading issue.

Oh, and I've altered my view of the ads: could you click on at least one ad per day that you find either entertaining or relevant to the site? I'd like to encourage the ads to be either amusingly off-topic or actually of interest. Thanks!

The best ones I've seen are ones telling me to buy or hire a Batman outfit in the Ask Travis thread.

Anyway, I hope that you're able to have your money situation fixed and that temp employment won't be too much of a strain. smile.gif

I hope not: I've got my first placement tomorrow. While they're waiting for some suitable office work to come in, they're sending me off to unload a lorry of Italian garden furniture. I'm certainly hoping that I won't strain anything! It's a bit depressing that I've got all these skills but I'm still scrabling around for cash. Ho hum. Well, I'm working on a new site that I think will be very popular and a bit more mainstream as well as appealing to us lot too.

EDIT: New odd advert, Jewish tours on the thread about Nazis and the occult in Issues. That was a bit odd, but the advertiser must have chosen that key word.

Now I'm getting something telling me to research cigars carefully before I buy them and an ad for a biometric thumb drive. I'm still looking for one in which I would actually be interested.

I was relieved to find that an ad for "New and Used items: search for kittens!" was for shoes. 0.o

Used kittens... it's an odd thought when phrased that way, though some shelters do sell cats who were adopted and then abandoned.
I just saw one for a "private stash" Humidor. Apparently it's perfect for travel.

"Kitten Mitten: Find, compare, and buy Pets! Simply fast savings!"

Hmm. I am not sure what it's trying to sell me, but I keep getting that one in this thread.

The best one I got so far was one about edible birds nests in the confess your sins thread biggrin.gif

Wow! I want one of those!

Don't forget, if you see something you like, or of a type of advert that you would like to see more of on this site, then give it a click. Currently we're getting about six clicks a day, which makes me about $2. I get money for a click, but also I gt money just for showing the adverts. The amount I get for showing the adverts depends on the percentage conversion of views to clicks.

For example:

Page impressions 5,588
Clicks 8
Page CTR 0.1%
Page eCPM $0.41
= $2.29

If I get more clicks then the page 'eCPM' goes up. Obviously I don't want to bankrupt small businesses through nicking their advertising money, but I also want to get decent and amusing adverts on here. I think we all want to see more weird Jesus advertising!
