this might be the wrong place, but i wasnt aiming for a dissucion.

there is going to be a national strike on may first, for immigrante rights. i belive that the national stike in london was sometime last week. anyway, people in school are encoraged to have walkouts, or just dont go to school, and your not supposed to go to work on may 1st. when asked why you dont show up to work, be honest. tell them you didnt go to work because you care about human rights. cool.gif

We were discussing freedom of speech, strikes and protests in history today and it turns out that upon entering the school, I signed a form sayig that I wouldn't go on strike or protest against the school! Quelle horreur!

On the news, it showed a story about a school principle putting a school on lock-down to prevent students from joining the walk out for the new imigration laws.

one did... wich expresses the importance that if you do plan a walk out... there are specific people not to tell. you do not have to do a walk out. simply dont attend schoool may first if it shall make it easier for you.

What exactly is this supposed to do? What does walking out on school or work have to do with the issues? Unless your school or employer is against immigrants' rights, or you are going to go to some event in support of immigrants' rights, why do it?

What the walk out is trying to demonstrate is the amount of immigrants that are present in America's society.

It's something akin to saying "Look what life would be like if we weren't here."

I, personally, won't be walking out of anywhere because while I believe in immigrant's rights, I don't believe in ilegal immigrant's rights.

That and I'm not an immigrant <.<

I, personally, won't be walking out of anywhere because while I believe in immigrant's rights, I don't believe in ilegal immigrant's rights.

That and I'm not an immigrant <.<

Without illegal immigrants, your fruit and vegetables would definitely be a lot more expensive. Illegal immigrants are really a quite integral part of our economy, which is very sad because they are treated so poorly here.

In my opinion, immigration laws are far, far too restrictive. In most countries, anyway. They're also rather racist. A US/UK couple faces only a 1% chance of being refused a visa if they are getting married. If half of the couple is from a less "desirable" country, there is more like a 25% chance that they will be refused a visa (I've even heard of it being 50% in some areas), even if the applications are almost identical otherwise. A person from Australia who wants a working holidaymaker visa in the UK will likely be approved even if their finances aren't quite enough to sustain them (you can only work for 12 months out of a maximum 2 year stay on that type of visa). A person from India who has more than adequate finances for the exact same visa (and the same professional qualifications) is more likely to be denied, even though people from both of those countries qualify for that type of visa.

I've been thinking about illegal immigrants a lot lately, and I think I've reached a conclusion about where I stand. As a future immigrant myself, illegal immigration creates more legal hoops that I have to jump through. But that is just a minor inconvenience for me, really. I will still get my visa, it will just take a bit more effort. I live a priviledged life in comparison to those who are making it slightly more difficult for me. And no one, regardless of their legal status in a country, deserves to be exploited...which is exactly what happens to illegal immigrants here.

Oh...as far as the original topic goes. On May 1st I have nowhere to walk out of. I'll just be sitting here at home...probably thinking about doing homework but not actually doing it. I'd give up thinking about what a horrible procrastinator I am for that one day, but really that'd be more of a gift to myself than any kind of statement on immigrants' rights.

I sincerely doubt you would get expelled for missing one day of school. That'd be pretty freaking retarculous. But people would definitely get fired for not letting their bosses know that they wouldn't be at work.

It happens. I'm just saying that if you tell your boss you don't plan on coming to work one day to show how reliant he is on you, expect to come back with someone else in your place. But then again, it might not.

I would join in if it was just for human rights, but as it is a communist party styley thing, I think I'll leave it. I hate joining in on political things as it pidgeon-holes you with that group.

Good luck on it though.

i am extreamly ciomfused as to why you think this is a CP thing.

p.s. this is FULLY about human rights.

Sorry, I just presumed it had something to do with it as when I was in London over the weekend, there was a plethora of posters for it, with the party's logo and name on. Probably something completely different, but it had something written on it about human rights, Mr GW Bush and it was held on May the 1st.

there is alot of parties taking part in the stike. i personally posted it here, and im a member of the WIL (workers international leauge), but that doesnt mean to use strike is all for marxists. the CP, YCL, y-fi, HOV, WIL, WFALP, TM, GP, IOW, WAW, the local hasian orginisation which i cannot spell, and the LP are all activly flyering for the national strike here in the st. louis area, as well as other places in the us.

its really more of a coalition, but not everyone is a communist. there are ,however, several communist (wide range of diffrent theories which im not listing) aking part. those would be the CP, YCL, Y-FI, and the WIL.

Last time it happenned here anyone who missed school because of it was expelled. They don't care what you do outside of school times but if you do not have a pressing unavoidable reason not to turn up when expected you get slapped.

I tend to agree with it. Education is important. As soon as the school day finishes rush out and protest all you want though.
