Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!
Does anyone have any plans? Mine include dealing with Rick (he says I'm bullshitting, but I really do lose the urge to clean when he PMSes on me) then eating food with my family (the six of us and maybe some others) and my friend Alan at like fourish. Alan, Rick and I have an evil plan. Alan's family eats rediculously early and about the time they're finishing up, we're starting, so he come over here to eat. After that, Alan, Rick and I are going to our friend's mom's place because they eat much later than we do. Yeah, I know it's bad, but it's tasty. So yeah, for those of you who celebrate it, what are y'all doing? -------------------- With every breath...and all that I am...I will make a stand...until the end. |

My family other than my mom, all ended up going elsewhere this year, so I get to relax and for that I'm thankful! lol My mom is making a traditional Thanksgiving dinner which I haven't had without me bringing it for myself and taking a lot of crap from my family, since I lived in Tennessee with my ex.

I don't understand what ThanksGiving is. Is it like American Christmas? Is it always on the same date?

There was a story about how this is the day that the pilgrims who colonized america and the indians who lived here in the first place got together and had this huge feast.
Although in reality (Accourding to my sister) the pilgrims were just tricking the indians into a fake sense of security right before they chased them off of their own land. They are currently gettting back at us (Accourding to my grandmother) with casinos. (This explanation has been brought to you by the odd conversations that my family has when we gather around a table together.) It is supposed to be a day where we stop and think about just how lucky we are to have clothes and food and a family that loves us, when there are so many others in the world who do not have those things. But it is mostly about eating until you pass out. I don't _think_ it always falls on the same day - but I've been known to be wrong. Edit: I was right: QUOTE The U.S. Congress in 1941 split the difference and established that the Thanksgiving would occur annually on the fourth Thursday of November, which was sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last. On November 26 that year President Roosevelt signed this bill into U.S. law. Thank Wikipedia. -------------------- Her dignity shone so bright like a light on a hill and she burned for me, no other man came near her flame. I understood it as the original settlers giving thanks that they would survive the winter having nicked a load of food off the Indians that they'd just massacred.

It's a possibility. The story about them feasting together was just the one that they told us in elementary school.

The native American's in a paticular area took pitty on the stupid settlers that had come to their land and couldn't figure out how to get food and would have starved to death, so they gave them food. That's the point of the holiday.
I'm sure that tribe kicked themselves in the ass later when the same people later stole their lands and banished them to unihabital lands, but that's not the point of the whole story and celebration. -------------------- ![]() Being Pimped By Aries Since 2003 |

Don't forget the bit where the tribes were given blankets from cholera victims so that the illness would kill them off without any effort on the part of the invaders.

I was just telling Witless about that, only in my version it was small pox. Considering cholera is generally transmitted by drinking contaminated water, I'd think Lo's version was closer to the truth. I had a Fakesgiving last Saturday with moop and snoo, where I accidentally grilled the pumpkin bread. moop is the only one who ate it, but everything else was good at least! Yesterday my family called me and I got to talk to them for quite awhile, so that was nice. Hopefully by this time next year I'll be able to visit them for Thanksgiving, but if not then I at least hope to master pumpkin bread in my oven. -------------------- I love you in a way that is mystical and eternal and illegal in 20 states.

Mmmm pumpkin bread.
I had a no-meat buddy in my family for once (a flaky aunt) so I got to make a yummy black-bean stir-fry thing with mango, veggies and lots of cilantro. The hordes of my Irish-catholic family were perplexed, so I've got plenty as leftovers, as well as the traditional post-Thanksgiving soups that my dad makes. There's something really wonderful about having over twenty five people staying in your house and then suddenly leave. I'm pretty fond of this holiday. -------------------- can I kiss your dopamine?
