Out of interest, what was the question? I'm looking to get something from the US myself... The shipping restrictions on places like Amazon are a right pain!

When I can afford it (several months away), I want to get a Roomba for my new flat. They're cool robot vacuum cleaners that you can set to clean your house while you're out. No more vacuuming for me! Hurrah! And it's a robot! Double hurrah!

Yeah it was about the restrictions on Amazon. I was going to order something from there, and ship it across. 100 quid or 100 dollars, had to try to get it from the USA.

Everything is massively cheaper in the US at the moment thanks to Mr Bush's astonishing handling of the economy over there...

How is it going to do at coping with British voltages?

I opted out of it from the USA in the end. The main reason I was using Amazon was to use the search boxes. I would have just used an adaptor, and that would have been the only power fuction I'd need to get round unless there was a difference in USB.

Most things that use a transformer (e.g. ipod charger) are designed to run off anything from 100-240v 50-60Hz AC. True, I'm mostly basing this on apple products (ipod, ibook charger), but the same holds true for the charger for my old digicam. In anycase, that means you just need to get a plug converter thingy which are usually dirt cheap.

USB is the same. If you were getting something from the US you would need not only a plug converter, but a power converter (I just got one for 20 dollars which is roughly 10 quid) because if you just get a plug converter you might damage the item because most aren't designed for the amount of power you guys have in your outlets. Pat is right though in that most apple products are nicely designed for being charged up anywhere, you just need to right plug.

Anyway a good way to get around amazon's shipping restrictions is to find someone in the US who's willing to have it shipped to them and then ship it to you, unless of course you've found a different way which is cool too. Anytime you may need that Mr. T if you want to get in touch with me about it, I'll let you have it shipped to my P.O. box and I'll forward it on to you, just let me know.

I thought that there might be issues with our power supply. I'll probably have a word with the manufacturer about it. I can't afford anything big at the moment anyway!

Yeah I looked into it so that I don't blow up my electronic equipment when I bring it out there with me. People have had problems with their stuff getting ruined because they only bought a plug converter instead of a power converter. England is on 220 volts and in the US it's 110 volts.

Does that mean we use more electricity in the UK?

Presumably it just means our current is lower. So in fact we use less electricity.

Actually power, electrical or otherwise, can be measured in watts (equivalent to a joule), which in the case of electricity is (volts x amps) so the voltage doesn't really mean anything on it's own. Typically the same device drawing through a 110V supply will be pulling twice as much current at the socket as one running from a 240V supply.

As for PSUs, normally you need to replace the transformer or use a converter if it has a traditional transformer supply. If the power supply is a switchmode device (the newer, very light ones) you can normally get away with just a plug converter.
