soo.
i'm going on this cross-country trip in a week or so, and instead of flying a plane, I'm taking an amtrak train. what I'm curious about is whether or not anyone has ridden amtrak (it'll span about three days) and what their experiences were - were the seats comfy, what all should I bring (besides the obvious) for said three days, will it be difficult to sleep, etcetera? the second train spans six hours and that's the one I have something other than a regular seat on - that one has showers and I think a bed and all that. but, I'm bad at packing so any help/reccomendations would help me out.

:P

oh, and I love you all.

Take a medium sized towel in your hand luggage. They make great shoulder-pillows, can keep you warm if you're cold/in a draft, and generally are brilliant for travelling.

and you'll be a hoopy frood who knows where her towel is. smile.gif

A good book or Ipod with favorite tunes? Combination of both with a book on tape or CD?

Will you need a passport? If so, some sort of travel pouch for important stuff like that so it isn't misplaced into a thief's hands may be good.

Camera? With film allowing high speed shots taken from window of speeding train?

Dry shampoo and baby wipes. You never know how good the facilites on these things are.

Headache pills etc are always good and if you need any travel sick stuff better take those.

Edibles are good and a reliable sourch of water also a sleep mask as you may find it hard to sleep with moderate lighting on.

Audio books also completely rock. The Harry Potter ones read by Stephen Fry kept me amused for ages, and they leave your eyes free to take in the scenery/watch out for weird people.

Oh wow, those are awesome suggestions. Particularly the towels and books on tape, since I seem to have a lot of trouble sleeping on public transportation. And yes, Pat, three days. tongue.gif No passport needed, it's all staying in America. I think the music and audiobooks will work out well, since my raging ADD keeps me inside of my own head a lot of the time.

Thanks, everyone! I'll post about the train experiences when I'm there, hopefully.

You haven't said where you're going, or any reason for the journey yet... But it all sounds very interesting - a good way to get some appreciation for the scale of your country and the diversity (and lack thereof) in it.

'Hope you enjoy it! Let us know how it all goes.

Oh, duh. I'm actually going to Akron, Ohio, where I'll be spending ten days with my best friend and his grandma and a few of his other friends. It's really just because we became very close in the last year and Ohio has always helped me gain some perspective since it's a very large change of scenery from Las Vegas. Occasionally being away from the overdose of civilization I get is relaxing, so hopefully it'll be that way.
Another girl was supposed to go with us, but she's unfortunately, err, well, things happened and now she isn't going. I'll manage. :P

I think that's the first time I've ever heard Las Vegas described as civilised. I've heard it called many things, 'overdose' does feature as a theme, but civilisation does not, except perhaps in terms of Rome before the fall of the empire!

Awww! If you've never been to Las Vegas, you should really visit if you're ever in America. It could be the fact that I've lived here for nearly 15 years, but this place is just . . I can't even describe it. It's wonderful and every time I leave I get so homesick it's ridiculous. It's also not as dangerous as everyone perceives it to be - we've never been robbed. I've never been mugged, and I've been on the strip thousands of times, never seen anyone get robbed or mugged, etcetera. Probably luck, but hey.
Oh, and there are naked ladies everywhere. Yay naked ladies!!

I can't possibly imagine why you have turned out like yourself in that environment... *attempts poker face* *fails*

Anyway, we all know that Las Vegas is a den of murder and intrigue. It also has a serial killer on average three times per year. CSI tells us this, and so it must be true - if you doubt them they can zoom in on it, accompanied to the sound of crunching soundeffects.

LOL.
god bless the international exchange of TV shows. if gil grissom lived here, i would have turned him into a pedophile years ago (see: when I was 15, since I think that's when it debeuted. or maybe earlier. who knows?), and jorja fox into a lesbian. i was also amazed they actually used our CBS local news anchor for the little news blips on it as well. i could never doubt CSI! every crime happens at the tangiers and rarely any other hotel/casino!

but really, las vegas isn't a cesspool of crime and drugs like my family believes. yes, we've gotten letters from relatives living elsewhere about how horribly i am growing up because of my influences. i also like the fact that my mother attempted to have the 'sex talk' with me for the first time because i'm going to ohio. wont have it with me while living in vegas, but ohio is the dangerous place.

also, i am so nervous i could vomit. tomorrow's the day!

I only know one girl from Ohio, but she'd just eat you up. Your mother's right on this one wink.gif

Note to self: never stay at the Tangiers.

I grew up in a place called Croydon, which blends into South London. It taught me how to spot trouble from a mile away, and consequentally I've never really had a problem. My mother believes that the place has always been a den of violence and drugs, but even more so now than ten years ago, so she is petrified every time I go back to see friends there. I rarely see anything to avoid, let alone get confronted by any of the problems.

Every place has its dodgy bits and after that it's all reputation.

that was actually the most reassuring thing anyone's said and a lot of my nervousness is calming down some. thank god! you're very right, though, and it also has a lot to do with being aware and being stupid. as in, i wouldn't wander miles off down an abandoned road that early in the morning talking on my cell phone.

but yeah, i'll be leaving in less than twenty four hours now. i think i just have to get past the innitial bus-ride and i should start to get less freaked out.

If you have trouble getting a carriage to yourself, try practising kabuki opera! smile.gif

Have a great time, and let us know when you get there. You've got your head screwed on properly, so you know not to do daft things like leaving a drink alone and uncovered, wandering off down dark alleys, etc etc blah. You'll probably have 50% a great time and 50% total boredom! Train journeys aren't always very exciting!

Remember, the more boring the place, the less alternative entertainments to sex there is. I grew up in Scotland, I know this xD

Still, trips are great once you learn the right balance of fun, exploring and sleep. I find it easy to forget that last part, but if you manage to sleep through the boring parts then you're sorted. I realise that by the time I'm posting this you've already left, but have a great time anyway.
