The other day my friend told me that he had registered to donate his organs
online and it got me wondering who else has done this?
I registered and felt all 'fuzzy' inside >< I mean, i didnt cure cancer or anything but at least my life may have made some difference.

I dont know how to make a link *hides head in shame*

That's awesome! I have never donated an organ but I might in the future.. When I'm of age and I don't need them.

I agree that it is pretty important and that is why the back of my DMV-issued drivin permit is checked and signed. Hooray for everyone on the Team of being Comfortable Enough to Give Away Their Old Body Parts When They Are Done With Them! (Jerry Orbach is on that team--has anyone else seen those ads on the 6 train?)

Izzy--just so you know, it is not like donating old socks to Goodwill. Usually you are only donating organs to the state when you are dead, unless Florida is more scary than I thought...

I would feel all fuzzy inside after I donated an organ, but I think I would be dead about that time.

I am a donor though.

Oooh. I've been registered in the US for nearly a decade now (wow, cannot believe it was that long ago that I got my driver's permit...and I still cannot drive!), but I was just thinking the other day that I should do so in the UK as well since I live here now.

Hmm. Okay, process completed, but I'm not sure it'll go through. "Your details will be matched with your NHS number and then your name will be added to the NHS Organ Donor Register." I don't think I have one of those thingys yet. I've been to A&E, and then was a patient at the eye casualty clinic in the hospital for about a month, but I've never been to a GP (I should maybe actually register with a GP soon unsure.gif ). Well, we shall see!

You mean when you're of death and don't need them, right?

Like they donate elderly, ailing organs to critically ill patients fighting for their lives?

*shrug* Not reserched it, maybe you can pawn your liver at the age of 18...or 21, depending on which state you're in.

Your liver. Right. I'm pretty sure you need at least one of those to live.

You can donate one of your kidneys while you're still alive. The rest is all pretty much off limits until death, though.

Izzy, if you want to be a donor (when you die, not before please) there is an option when you get any state-issued ID (ie: learner's permit, driver's license, or state ID card) to make the card say on the back "Upon my death I wish to be an anatomical donor." I think it'll also say "D" under the restrictions on the front, but I cannot remember and can't be bothered to find mine. So basically just wait until you're old enough for a learner's permit and then ask about it when you go to the DMV.

I wonder how long it will be before they've developed enough technology to take over for some of the more basic organs...until then, organ donors save lives every day, and I think it's a wonderful thing to be one.

It's anatomical "gift" actually, which I find a really funny image. "I gave an anatomical gift to your mom last night."

I think you can give bits of organs if you're still alive. Liver bits. Pancreatic bits. Other bits--they use stem cells, I think, to stimulate growth in the tissues until you have two livers from one. It is hell of illegal to sell or buy organs in the States, but you can give away liver parts or a kidney if that is the kind of thing you are into. It's kind of interesting how much you can live without.

A question for those who may or may not have seen the 'Jerry Orbach's eyes' posters: What superpowers do you think the recipient(s) of those eyes got?

(in that picture, it doesn't look like he has any eyes at all, but he is just squinting.)

All my organs are up for use (when I die) including my eyebones. Although seeing as they don't even work for me, properly, I'm not sure if anyone else would want them.

They can have anything they want from me when I die. Most of me works so good luck to them.

Donated my late spouse who died young of a stroke... They use just about everything... the skin for burn patients, eyes etc... It is a long questionaire even if you have the box on the back of your drivers licence checked... better to contact the doner organizations and have that "junk" filled out early otherwise it can be very tramatic!
