Well, sort of any way. The school theatre and performing arts program are putting on another play, and since it took about 30 minutes to get everyone seated and in their proper place last time, the music teacher thought it'd be nice to have some live music. She held auditions about 2 weeks ago, and today we found out we made it! Woo!

So we asked her what we should play, and said "It's up to you, it's your gig."

And that's when we got our brain freeze. So, feel free to name some songs you like, and we'll try to learn them and play them. (School appropriate please!)

So far we have:

Ending Day (by us, also the song we auditioned with)
Stuck Inside (another of our songs)
Ac/Dc - Back in Black
Green Day - Good Riddance

We're also considering:
Guns 'n Roses - Paradise City
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams

If we play well enough, we get be the band for the Spring Fling! biggrin.gif

Under The Bridge by the Red Hot Chille Peppers is always popular, and might be slightly more suitable for 'people sitting down' music... As long as no-one listens to the lyrics to closely; however, it does need more cow-bell.

A dance remix of Rachmaninov's 9th Symphony would also probably go down well. Possibly the tune from Camberwick Green performed with dustbin lids would also bring the house down.

Well done on getting the gig smile.gif

As long as you don't play Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, then you should be fine.

How about "Are You In?" by Incubus? The line "It's so much better/ When ev'ryone is in/ Are you in?" could be emphasised to get everyone to sit down.

Oh, OH!
Bring it on, yeah? Two minutes, TWO MINUTES. Outside. I'll shank you. You haven't got the guts (nor the inclination to take two trains and a tube) to come here and face me.

Anything by Jonathan Coulton. First of May would be good.

Lai Lai Hei by Ensiferum. Just because I think it's a ridiculous song and therefore should be played at every opportunity.

Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll by Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

There's a Moon in the Sky (Called the Moon) by The B52's

Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in the Spotlight) by Thin Lizzy

Okay, if I think of anything else that'd amuse me for you to play I'll add them to this.

Rock Lobster by The B-52's. You can all have lots of fun making the sounds of the narwal, sea robin and so on.

I think the point is to not get expelled. We'll play the songs, no problem. Just probably not sing it.

Becky, we were thinking of doing A Certain Shade of Green by Incubus. We'll listen to Are You In next time we're all in the same room, and just do whichever we like better. Possibly both.

Mata, playing something by The Red Hot Chili Peppers is actually a really good idea, as the majority of my school likes them. And thanks. smile.gif

All the other songs we'll listen to, and if any are really 'Wow! We so need to play that!' we will.

Only have like 3 weeks to go! Eek!

Holy.. We officially have a name. It's been like a year since we had a name we all agreed on. It's Baker Act.

The Baker Act allows police in the state of Florida to hospitalize people for up to 72 hours if they appear to be a threat to himself and/or others. I've mentioned it a few times here on Matazone (I'm a huge opponent).

If you're gonna do a cover, it should be either something right up your alley (like when Autumn Offering did Metallica's "Enter Sandman" or Mushroomhead's cover of Pink Floyd's "Empty Spaces") or it should be a song you have no right covering. Here are some examples:

Dope, "You Spin Me 'Round" originally by Dead or Alive
Dope, "People Are People" originally by Depeche Mode
Evergreen Terrace, "She's a Maniac" by a band whose name I can't recall but it wasn't a hardcore band like Evergreen Terrace is.
Days of Massacre, "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio
Mushroomhead, "Crazy" by Seal
Dope, "F*ck the Police" by NWA

I'm sure you get the idea.

Also, make sure they're in you're ability range and whatever you're tuned in (these days, usually drop-C or drop-D tuning). Some of the songs mentioned are done in standard tuning. Scope around online or talk to someone who's been playing for a long time if you want to do conversions.

Strange covers can be really fun. Nina Gordon's cover of 'Straight Outta Compton' is fantastic!

Halfway Down The Stairs by Robin is another Muppet classic that is screaming for a death metal makeover. Mna-Mna-Na would be more tricky.

Tracks based on friendship are always good for high school things.
"Friends will be friends" by Queen
"With a little help from my friends" by the the Beatles

Also I heard some excellent school band versions of
"Bakerstreet" by Jerry Rafferty
"Hammer to fall" by Queen

Anything that will make your high school seem like the best place in the world will make you popular with the administration. Upbeat numbers or mellow stuff that is still positive

*rofl* Totally doing that.

Mata, I'm about to go and listen to the Muppet song. If it's something along the lines of what I think it is (which I don't really know how to explain.. something like like a theme song for a kiddie show?) we'll definetley try to work it in and play it for the little kids. (My school's K-8, so yeah, I mean little kids.

Also, I'm not sure if I've said this yet, but we're probably gonna do We Will Rock You by Queen. It's simple and good for audience interaction.

Becky, A Certain Shade of Green > Are You In. My guitar teacher is going to go over on how to properly play A Certain Shade of Green on Monday. Yays.

^ If you are gonna do the Muppets theme tune, please do the gay bar version? It would be great.

Incidentally, isn't that lyric from a poem by A. A. Milne?

Hmm.. Gay could mean happy. Bar could mean one of those metal things you hit your friends with. It could happen. Probably not, but we might learn to play it at a later time. tongue.gif
