I'm going to be working at a very decent games company based in Oxford. It's quite a different set up to my last place, so that should be a nice change. I'm really quite excited about this move, and I certainly hope I'm there longer than my last place!

This does mean that I have to move house again. Those who remember me moving last January may recall that I despise moving with a passion. The costs are extraordinary, especially when it comes to estate agent fees. 200 to print off a couple of standard forms to be signed? Rip off! Then there's packing everything that you own away into boxes and finding new places for it. *sigh* Well, hopefully it will be easier this time now I've had practice from last time and a good clear out a year ago.

I'll leave it as 'an Oxford based company'. You will have heard of their games.

I'm going to be doing level design: making the environments for people to run around in, getting the enemies in the right places, controlling the pace, and things of that nature. I've got my suspicions about what title I'll be working on, but that's not been confirmed. Even if I did know for sure I wouldn't be allowed to tell you anyway. Sorry! There are a lot of secrets in the games industry, and the less that goes out in public the less tempted people will be to ask me questions I'm not going to answer.

Ooh, the mysteries of the game industry make me feel all tingly inside. Or maybe that's the curry I've just had.

Either way, well done you sir!

le w00t! Oxford based gaming for the win, Mata! Good job on you and all that. I know exactly what you mean about moving. It ranks right up there with searching for a job and major dental work on the list of unfortunate, unpleasant and sadly necessary things we need to do to remain not homeless, in the money and not toothless, respectively.

I actually kind of like moving house. It's like Christmas- stressful, full of spending, but you get to unwrap so much awesome stuff!

Congratulations on the new job, Mata! And good luck with moving biggrin.gif

I'll see what I can do about that. I think I did pretty well on Burnout Paradise: you don't get much better than having the default record on one of the main streets in the game to be held by 'Matazone' smile.gif

I suspect that it will be a lot more tricky on my next games!

Thanks for your good wishes everyone. It's going to be an interesting month ahead: I start work on the 7th, just over a week away, and for the next five weeks I'm going to be living in a shared house thing with several other employees of the company. I hope they're nice!

Yay team Mata!

Congratulations on your new job. Sorry to hear about moving again but may that also go smoothly. Liquor boxes make good book boxes. I'm aware of this from experience. Pharmacies and grocery stores also are kind about letting you raid free boxes. Drug (middleman warehouse) companies here in Canada use lovely boxes to ship drugs to the stores.
Then find everyone with a vehicle you know and offer them free pizza and beer to haul boxes to your new digs.
I'm offering tips that you already know so I'll quit blathering now. biggrin.gif

You Go You!

I think every industry with compitition has it's secrets. I had to sign my favorite sheet about confidentiality and there is a rule about the meetings we have had my internship about the new departments and new branding and what not that we can't talk about it until it goes public. I even had to sign one at Niketown which is funny because the most information I could know is how many shoes we have of special launch shoe.

But congratulations on the job I know when you love what you do it makes a job a lot less like a job and a lot more like having fun and getting paid for it, lol. As for moving I hate it and yet back this past fall I managed to move twice in two months so yea I know about pain in the ass moving, lol, plus moving in the city sucks espically when one location you can't find parking.

This is a little late, but Congrats Mata!

Also, I agree with Becky, when moving, pretend all your boxes are presents to make it more fun.

I'm a little bit past that level these days. When you own bulky furniture you have to pay someone with a big lorry 400 to move it all for you. On the plus side, they do provide the boxes!

I shall try this.

I've got a very staggered move ahead - I'll be living in Oxford five days a week until mid-May, so it's going to be like moving out to university halls then having my house follow me five weeks later!

Nope, I figured I'd get to the city first and then start looking. That still gives me five weeks from my planned moving out date. I'm mainly looking in the Botley area because it's closest to work.

Congrats and boo. I've just moved from Warrington to Westcliff to Billericay in the space of less than a year so I sympathise with you smile.gif

Sorry I've not been around much. Will try and remedy that but I don't get home til 7.30pm and after relaxing and eating in the real world the internet doesn't get much of a look in. Also, it's not always easy to pop on at work sad.gif

I would just like to reiterate how much I despise moving house. Usually it's just the packing/moving process I hate, but this time I've got an additional layer of loathing laid on top by Oxford letting agents seeming to be 95% idiots.
