im alright, my power has been back on for 51 minutes now.

wow, announcement:

failure @ the 14th street substation in NYC caused everything by causing a domino effect and knocking out power to many north eastern states and eastern canada aka the Niagra grid.

my phones are ok, cell phones arent working too well because the system is flooded with calls...

Eeek! Poor Fromage, in a strange city with no power! sad.gif I hope it comes back on soon! What a time for this to happen, geez! I also hope Gerbil is okay, but I'm less worried about him cause he's from NYC, while Fromage is a tourist. Geesh. I dunno if anyone else is in that area....I'm sure there are a few (it is over a rather large area...dang. Delaware to Ohio..that's a LOT of people). I hope they're all doing okay!

I wonder if people are stuck on the trains in transit....That'd be just horrible sad.gif

Wow, pretty crappy stuff there!

So, is the US electricity system so bad that the failure of 1 substation knocks out the North east of the US AND a lump of Canada? Blimey ohmy.gif

Apparently, my girlfriend's folks in Cleveland, OH won't have power for a couple of days.

Seems a little fishy to me, and I'm not talking terrorist nonsense. Just a severly badly designe power distribution network with a worrying small amount of redundancy.

Hey I suffered that power outtage and it's no laughing matter! I have bad lungs/heart and the heat can really snarf me up (even though I can take the heat for a while, but when I can't... it's over).

Actually about the time 9/11 happened , experts criticised the outdated design of the powergrid, something as stupid as a small powersurge, say a lightning strike to one of the power plants unleashes a trigger to all the other plants, causing there plants to go off-line...for "self-protection" from that power surge

...this is a system made in the 60's people, it's waaay outdated.

redundancy? short of creating two powerplants per each existing powerplant in every city
there is no way to have a stand alone power source to supply a vast city at the same time, nothing of this nature can be "backed up" all the way ...

then you're also talking about alot of politics and boundaries , its complicated , not that it couldn't be done, its just gonna be hard ...

I see some power has been rstored to some cities, I been watching since this afternoon...good luck to all the people in the east ...and canada...

hope all that need a/c and auxiliary power for their equipment are making it so far...

*hugzzz*
