Well, since I've been kind of lonely, I decided to buy a couple of gold fish to keep me company. So I went to Petco and spent like $57 on two gold fish, a tank, plastic glow in the dark plants, gravel, cute little roman colomns to go in the tank, fish food and water conditioner. So, I go back to my dorm, set it all up, and introduced my fishies carefully, making sure to follow the directions so they wouldn't go into shock. After I did that I went out to this casino night thing at a coffee house down here, and came back 30 minutes later (it was just too crowded for me). And they were dead. Dead as doornails.

I was so upset I cried. Because I killed the stupid things. I know I did. I must of done something wrong when I set up the tank--like maybe the water was too warm or I put too much conditioner in. I murdered my fish. And they didn't even have names yet.

I just talked to my RA and she said it was probably the Denton water--she told me that it's really bad and that if you drink it it will make your stomach hurt, and that I should have used distilled water instead of tap water, that that was what she used for her fish until she knew they were strong enough to handle the bad water--I wish I had known this before--now I'm wondering about even brushing my teeth and washing with the water here--it's kind of scary that it would kill the fish that quickly unsure.gif

My advice? Find your local walmart. They sell goldfish for 28 cents. Buy lots.

Fish are actually really hard to look after, its not a case of putting food in the bowl and leaving them, especially when they are new and have to be put in the bowl.

Im the queen of fish tongue.gif Last year mum and me bought our own goldifsh because our dog had died a couple of months before and i wanted something. So first off we bought fluffy and dougal, then i went and bought plop for mum so we could all have a fish... then plop died so we went and bought plop2 and gonzala. Then plop2 died (dont call your fish plop..) I think it was the ater because then fluffy and dougal were getting ill and gonzala went a bit crazy and started jumping out of the water... Gonzala used to bully the ill fish by chasing them and biting them, so he was put in solitary confinement over night, then reintroduced but still he did it.. Dougal was the next to go, then fluffy and well it was left to just gonzala going rounf and round the bowl untill one day he wasnt sad.gif

This all happened in the space of a month tongue.gif

So ehum why dont you try a hamster or something?

What I noticed with me having 2 fish mostly is that one would always die. The longest time i had one fish was 2 years and that was Bubbles. I liked Bubbles. Anyway then we got a really big tank, like a 10 galloon so we though to put 3 more fish for Bubbles: rocky, pebbles and Fifi. well they all slowly died, and looked like Fifi killed herself my suffercating herself in the aqua rocks so Bubbles was alone again in this big tank. then she died later on...i still miss Bubbles, she was cool. She liekd me reading to her cuz everytime i did she would swim up and down the corner of the tank watching me.

Awww...that's too bad about the water. I had a fish, a neon tetra, at Uni for about 8 monthes before I finally stopped feeding it because I couldn't bring it home and I didn't know what else to do with it. Everone laughed at me when I bought distilled water for Blinky (the fish) but he stayed alive for a really long time. You can get distilled water cheap alot of places. Poor fishies...

I'm pretty good with fish. Let's see if I can help you out.

First thing, it's ALWAYS best to buy distilled water when you're getting fish. Water is crap just about everywhere. Leave the distilled water out to reach room temperature when you get it. Be sure to use water conditioner on it before adding your fish, too. Just because the water is distilled and bottled doesn't mean that it's totally clean and ready for a fish.

When the tank starts getting scummy, don't just clean it all out. Empty out about 2/3 of the tank and add newly treated distilled water. You don't want to get rid of all the water because it has good algae in it that the fish need to survive, plus it helps get the new water close to what they're used to.

If the tank gets so nasty that you absolutely have to clean it all out, DON'T use soap. Rinse all the stuff out with water. Scrub it with a sponge if you have to. But don't put any kind of cleaners on it. The cleaners leave behind a residue that is poisonous to fish.

Lastly, don't overfeed your fish. Check the box/can/bottle of fish food to see how much you should feed them. Overfeeding makes the water scummy and nasty, and can even kill your fish if they gorge themselves.

That's about all I know about fish. It's worked for me so far; I've had a pretty tetra for the past few months, and the same goldfish for the past 4 years.

Yep, I live in Texas. I'm going to the University of North Texas in Denton.

I took the fish back today and got a refund. Then I went to Walmart and bought two gallons of distilled water and a filter for the tank, and also a book on freshwater aquariums. I already have the conditioner. I dumped out all the old water from the tank and rinsed everything, and left it out to dry. Tommorow I'm going to set everything up again, then I'll let it set, and Friday I'll go get more fish.

In other news, I'm actually starting to meet other people here. For the first time I ate with someone else in the cafeteria at dinner today, and tonight I went to this "Coffee Haus" night at this place called The Cup, which is pretty much a free coffee house for UNT students, it's really cool. And I actually met some people there. It was easier than I thought--I just walked up to a table, asked, "Mind if I sit here?" and ended up talking with these people the rest of the night, and exchanging email adresses.

All and all, I'm having a much better day today than yesterday happy.gif

Aww sorry to here about your fish. Ya you have to be carefu with the water. It is getting to the point where you have to literally test your water for poisoness qualities if it s a town water supply. I am fortunate enough to have spring fed water so it is pretty clean but I am sure if you go back to the pet store and check with them, I am sure things will work out fine.

My friend bought some perana fish and one ended up eating the rest of them. So liek a Parana haha

my mom used to have fish when i was little. they all died real quickly 'til we discovered that the themometer was leaking mercury! mom got a new thermometer and they lived for a long time after that. unfortunately, the fish that lived were evil, and killed my newt! they ate a whole in his back and everything! that was quite traumatic for a little kid...

Awww, that is so utterly adorable that you used to take the time to read to your fish. wub.gif

Sorry to hear about your goldfish troubles, Belldandy. Better luck next time, especially now that you know a little more about what might have gone wrong the first time. 'Tis nice to hear that college life is treating you well too. smile.gif
