After coming back from getting his computer back and fixed, his computer is STILL freezing on animations and stuff like that. He might even have to stop coming here because some of the avatars on here are making his computer freeze up. We both guessed its prolly the ones that are animated to move and such, even he isn't sure. So now it's come down to this.... I emailed my sister to get any advice that he can follow that might help him out and I'm here...my fellow matazonians... to gimme any advice you have or tricks you might know to help his problem.

He's running on 128 RAM, it was 64 before but he upgraded it, he's on Windows 98 SE (I believe) and has the same internet connection as I do, 56k dialup. His ISP is Sympatico....I hope any of this info helps.

Reaper still also thinks noone will miss him, and of course I have proved him wrong a couple times already...maybe this might be the final proof. I wouldn't come asking you people for this favour if I knew it wasn't important.

thanks,
Rebecca

there are only three things that I can think of that might make any difference at all.

1) get a graphic accelorator card. that may help (not one I'd try first)
2) upgrade your interent connection (I don't know if this will help really though.)
3) try using a different browser. (if he's using IE now try netscape, if he's using Netscape try IE)

There's an option somewhere in 'My Controls' where you can stop viewing all avatars and signatures.

... is all true ...

I'll help if I can .... but to get to the bottom of it requires lots of looking up of stuff ... However it is worth it cos it seems that comp is not acting right ... and that is just not good enough. We must ALL join the crusade against the comp telling US what is right or wrong .... fact is WE are masters of the comp ...

SO:

The computer hangs ....

This means a rejection problem ... they say compatibility, but its really rejection ...

SO: WHAT IS THE COMP REJECTING?

Suggestions:

*update and run antivirus prog ... big scan ...

*consider updating windows, but on a modem this hurts, bites, and sucks at the same time ...

*Download ADAWARE the prog, and let it cut out all the commercial crap ...
that is at least 3 buckets loads of stuff you dont want GONE!

*NEXT play spot the nasty driver ... good candidates are:

*any logitech device ... they're fine, but you must ALWAYS go on the net, and download the latest driver ...

*install FLASH 6, as says mingtea, for sure ...

*update and scan with antivirus ... definitely ...

*suss out ANY stuff that may not have the best driver, logitech style ... graphics cards are second choice for sure ...
ANYTHING new could be the culprit

*and go to START BUTTON ... RUN ... and type MSCONFIG ... then hit ENTER button ... in the last bit about startup progs are (almost) all the stuff that starts up when you open your comp ... most sources of evil are to be found there ... you can disable them one by one and see what happens (time:1 hour easy, 2 hours too)

YOU ARE THE MASTER OF YOUR COMPUTER ... this is important.

good luck ... question authority ... fight the power

I know this doesn't sound as educated and vast as some of the other suggestions, but has he tried clearing out his cache? I know that's been known to not let animations load correctly at times. It's worth a shot at least.

Cache is basically all the temporary files that get put on your computer by using the net. IE the temp files of all the avs, sigs, smileys, etc.

If it's netscape, program files, netscape, it's users....whatever his user name is....then the cache file

also try c:/ then windows, then temporary internet files.

Good calls. Once he can read this along with the email from my sister, he'll prolly be able to go into this further.

Any more suggestions?

Pab has said everything that I would have suggested. I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to update from Windows 98, it's five years out of date now... This said, I use Windows 2000 Professional which is (comparatively) stable and does the job nicely for me.

To clear your cached internet files in IE, open IE, Tools>Internet Options>Press the 'Delete files' button. I do this every couple of days to keep things running okay.
