I'm bipolar and my meds haven't been working recently (they've been changed a few times dry.gif ). Right now, I'm taking depakote (a mood stabilizer), effexor (an antidepressant) and lamectil (another mood stabilizer) and they aren't really working that well. My nurse practitioner and I are going to try lithium again with another drug to help it. Meds changes have the potential to be detrimental if not dangerous, so I won't be around much for awhile while we change meds. I'll be around now and again to say hi or whatever, but it'll only be occasionally. Once I get more stable, I'll be back full-time. Thanks you guys. I'll talk to you later.

Right, so how do you get diagnosed with that? I assume you just feel as low as you're going to get and a 'professional' tells you that that is what you've got? unsure.gif Sorry to sound thick but I've never come it before and, as far as I am aware, have luckily never suffered from depression although have had some seriously low points in my life. I usually get physically sick before being mentally sick and that brings me back to reality with a thump and I do something. Hope that makes sense smile.gif

Y'know, I've never thought about that. I've never really asked, don't like to pry. I'll probably be able to find out from my friend how she was diagnosed but it'll be after a few days. *ponders*

But hugs for Righteous, *hug* and I hope you get on the right medication post haste.

Get better soon and all that jazz. Jeez, there's alot of people around with Bipolar these days... Was it always this common or has something happened in the last fifty years.... I guess we only just started diagnosing it.

Apparently, it's certain symptoms, such as low energy levels, feeling tired all the time, not sleeping properly, mood swings, generally feeling like everything is on top of you... that sort of thing. The doctor should be able to diagnose it.

Stress has the same symptoms, which is probably why it's diagnosed more these days, as stress should go away but tends not to in this day and age.

my mum was diagnosed as manic-depressive (or bipolar, whatever) when i was nine. she was sectioned as she had been having strange mood swings, disturbed sleeping and eating patterns, loss of memory, and eventually became mildly delusional and psychotic.

its called manic-deppression because sufferers are subject to both extremes although usually tend towards one or the other. for examlpe my mum got manic a lot and would get aggressive, have massive cleaning frenzies, would go out driving at all hours, that kind of thing. generally unable to stay still or at rest for any period of time. but other days she would be so deppressed she could barely leave her bedroom and almost completely lost her memory, she would often ask who we (me and my sisters) were when she was down.

like i said its different for everyone but i hope that helps explain things a bit further. smile.gif

ps - its linked to genes (we have a strong family histroy of it) but can also be triggered by stressful events. my mum was diagnosed shortly after my dad started visiting us again, also stuff in her chioldhood. its all very vague about who gets it nd why but its a chemical imbalance in your brain. lithium can help stabilise it and is used to treat a lot of manic-deppressives

Okay, today's the big day. They're taking me off of lamictil and raising my levels of depakote. I'm also going on another mood stabilizer called wellbutrin while staying on . Keep me in your prayers. If you guys want, you can IM me on AIM or Yahoo to say hi or let me know what's going down here on Matazone. Love you guys.

Oh, and Freshmaker, I'll still be checking my mail and PMs, so I'll still be able to give you help, advice and what-not.

Best o' British. Hope the new meds work for you.

I know lithium is somethign similar to a downer (valium type drug) but what are the others you mentioned? We don't really come across stuff such as this in the UK (As Pixie probably demonstrated. I'd heard of bipolarity, but I've never stopped to think how it would be diagnosed and treated)

Mental illness is kind of disregarded in the UK. Its a general attitude that you're supposed to just knuckle down and get on with it. British stiff upper lip so to speak. I think it has to be at extreme levels before medical help steps in.

I guess this is probably differnent elsewhere in the uK, but where I'm from, its rare to come across this klind of thing.
