Now you can have them...apparently.

A Japanese toy company has invented a gadget that will make you dream whatever you want to.

Well, they say they can't guarantee complete customer satisfaction, but for $140 bucks or so, that's not terribly shabby.... I mean, it's not outrageously priced at like, $600 or something. And I wouldn't mind the idea of being in control of my dreams when I want to be; the only thing that would worry me is if it had some sort of after-affect on my natural ability to dream, 'cause that would be creepy... ph34r.gif

For $140-ish, I would *so* get me one of those. Like Sammi, I'd be afraid of ruining natural REM patterns, but it could be so much fun every once in a while. I'd love to see if this actually works!

I don't know if I would like to control my dreams at will. Your dreams tell you your innermost thoughts, and recently I had one that helped me get through something bogging me down. Appealing, but there are natral ways to control your dreams through "self realization". I may just prefer to keep my dreams at a distcance. Let the subcounscious (spelling? meh) be the director, I want to watch.

I find it very easy to control my dreams, there comes a point where you just know that what ever you are seeing is not real. But about controlling dreams, you can have about 5 dreams a night but I will probably only remember 2 or 3 and only be able to control one, usually the last one before I wake, so inner thoughts can still be revealed through previous dreams.

Though the mind stops thinking about something conciously the brain keeps on working at it, thats why if you forget something then maybe a few hours later you will remember it.

I like dreams just how they are! You never know what your going to dream about before it happens and sometimes you don't remember what happened in it but you wake up feeling all happy and it's a nice feeling. If it happened every day it wouldn't be so special and dreams wouldn't be so random and you might not end up eating your pillow once in a while when you dream about marshmallows tongue.gif

Y'know, I bet they're probably going to get quite a few sales from people with that exact mode of thinking: "it's not that expensive, and I really want to see if it works!"

lol....

It's an interesting idea...i'd be more in the market for something that would help me to remember the dreams I already have. I only remember one or two in an entire week, much less in a night. For a while I thought I didn't have any dreams at all because I just couldn't remember anything about any of them. I couldn't even remember dreaming at all. It was weird.

My challenge to these toy-makers: "Make a Dream Recorder!!"

Think of the horndogs who would dream of nothing but porn.

Can we really let that happen?

Let them see porn the old fashioned way, by getting it themselves or other methods.....

Isn't thinking about people while jacking off enough?

That sounds pretty cool. I would definitely want to try that at least once.

But here comes my paranoid streak...
I read somewhere that dreams are your brains way of dealing with all the experiences and memories of the previous day. Sort of rinses you out so you can start afresh the next morning. When people don't dream (like alcoholics) they tend to hallucinate and have 'waking dreams' I wonder if the same thing would happen if you always had 'designer dreams' If you have control over what you dream about perhaps you won't dream about the things that you need to dream about to have a healthy sub conscious?
*shrugs*

Anywho, it sounds like a nifty gadget.

We really don't understand how dreams work, despite what interpretters of dreams say. Some psychologists now believe (and I don't ahve a psych textbook with me, so I'm not completely sure if everything to follow is 100% true) that it's somewhat akin to a seizure, in which impulses sweep rapidly across the brain, except in a much more controlled manner. Basically, when it triggers a memory pathway, the memory goes off in our a brain and our brains try to interpret it. So because new memories are so fresh and the neural pathways are just set up, they're more likely to be triggered -- hence we often dream about the day's prior occurances.

Dreams may have a role to play, therefore, in memory, amoung other things, by solidifying the neural pathways as we sleep (due to impulses being fired through them via this apparently random process).

So, if my understanding of this is correct, it might be most detrimental to long-term memory if designer dreams are used all the time. Who knows, though, since we really don't understand what dreams are.

Your dreams can teach you things, they are quite important to our mental and emotional health, they show our innermost thoughts.

Hmmm. I'd probably try it at least once...just to try it.

But I don't know if I'd continue to use it after that. Probably not. As weird as my dreams can be sometimes, I'd rather not change them for the most part since I don't know what purpose they serve...

And if I used it repeatedly...I could see myself becoming unhealthily attached to that thing.

I think that they may be electrical impulses, but it has been proven that if you don't have these random electrical impulses on a regular basis you tend to hallucinate and have waking dreams.

So there.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with that, fair Jaq. Just balking at the idea that "they show our innermost thoughts." Not that they aren't fascinating, I just don't think that our dreams are our subconscious minds "trying to tell us something." That's all. Not that it isn't fascinating what our subconscious mind comes up with, in response to said random electrical impulses.

Why? I'm not seeing the problem here. Most people's dreams tend to be sexual anyway, and most men (and many women) have wet dreams. All it is is harmless fantasy by night.

Things I would rather dream about is not necessarily wet dream material, thank you very much. Assumptions are no good either. Not everyone wants to dream in porn. e_e (Or maybe it just me...?) And either way, it's JUST A DREAM. Not reality, not living the dream in real life, not changing the actual, physical, existing world, just a DREAM. Reeelaaaaxxx... Not that huge of a deal, really... Maybe it will even give people the courage to try new things they wouldn't necessarily do, and good things at that. Who knows? It could have a good influence as well, or maybe not a negative impact at all. We just don't know.

Depends on the person. Some people need more sex, some people need less. That's hardly the issue, though. If a few people want to have exciting fantasies at night as well as during the day, that's their perogative.

Well, duh. But some people would find it kind of fun. So I really don't see the harm in it... I doubt it's all that effective anyway, seeing as how it's merely trying to steer your brain in a certain direction during REM, not give it play-by-play instructions on how the dream should proceed.
