Tonight I was going to put some henna in my hair, never tampered with my golden locks before and was wondering the best 'procedure' to do so.

Has anyone else experiemented with henna? What were the results?

I don't know if it happens with henna, but it does with other dyes - has a tendency to dye a little of your skin the same colour. To prevent this, smear a little hair conditioner around the skin at your hairline.

valesine works well in place of hair conditioner. It stays put easier. I've foundt his works especially well when you want to dye your hair with Kool Aid. That stuff dyes everything.

edit: please excuse fragments of sentences and spelling mistakes. so very very tired.

It's very brave of you to attempt henna on your first go ohmy.gif I went from blonde to a sort of reddy brown when I was 15 and I got laughed out of my form room (by some very nasty boys *sulk*) as I'd managed to dye my forehead red too laugh.gif Well that's not strictly true but I have these little fluffy hairs around my hair line which got dyed bright red so it looked like I have a red stripe on my forehead dry.gif I've been dying my hair since I was 15 *cough 12 years cough* and therefore that makes me an expert tongue.gif wink.gif

I'm going to get mine dyed again in 2 weeks. I'm going for black but when the light hits it it should shine purpley red smile.gif It's currently black with red streaks but the roots are coming through sad.gif

Stay away from those packet wash in wash out ones as they either don't work at all or they work too well and don't wash out. Semi-permanent ones that last 6-8 weeks last longer and they are still permanent but they fade quicker. If you want something drastic it pays to have someone who knows what they are doing do it for you. Probably all stuff you knew already smile.gif

I hope your hair dying endevours carry on for years to come, it really is the only way biggrin.gif

Well with any luck you'll get pictures of my current hair (root an' all biggrin.gif) after the meet. I've changed the settings on my phone with O2 as of 9th Feb so I should be able to send and receive MMS texts too so I can show people my new hair as of 14th smile.gif

Yeah well first day at school with new hair. I've been called everything from 'Carrot' to 'Used Tampon'.

It looks okay when in the dark of my house, but I took a look at it this morning and realised that i'd gone ginger. ohmy.gif

Might re-do hair and make it blue. Blue nice...

Henna sucks big time. It's messy, and rubbish, you never get the colour you want. I always use bleach coz my hair is naturally black and dyes just don't work, so i have to bleach it before I can be bright red and saucy..... biggrin.gif

I have crappy roots that are about ummm... 3 inches long now...crappyness! I wear a hat whenever possible cos it hides it so well but hats don't suit me so I tend to put my dads flat cap on backwards cos it apparently suits me and hides sed roots quite well but roots are evil scum! But the bleach lets me have pinkish bits so I don't mind...and in the summer it was bluey/green and it was loverly! Hehehe maybe one day I'll get the guts to do the whole lot *gasp*

Offical Uber stylist of ISH here....sorry I am lil late in the thread, and I didn't read all of it.

Did you go ahead with the Henna? Henna is great as long as you don't plan to do anything else to it. It also depends on what type of Henna you used. Once you have used Henna you pretty much rule out being able to use bleach or other hair colours. Some formulations of Henna have metalic bits in it. If you try to remove (ie.bleach or strip) the henna your hair will most likely melt or break off. Other hair colours tend to not take "over" henna...I mean if you tried to colour your hair darker, it might bot take because of the henna....

Hope that helps at all, if not, just ignore me...

Hairdresser pet peeve....refering to hair colour as "dye". Henna is in fact a dye....it works by staining the hair. Ohter hair colour works by causing a chemical reaction with the hair...so it isn't a dye>:)

I consider myself to be a hair dye expert. As CAth will tell you I have dyed my hair every colour under the sun. Before I had to go all respecakabble it had purple streaks in it. Now it is just auburn/ maroon, but I have been dying it since my first offical playgroup picture (OK so it was my mum at that point) at the age of three. The best dyes to use are the ones that tell you how long they stay inn on the bottle. Henna can be unreliable as it is a natural dye and depends on the absorbancy of your hair. Chemical dyes still have this problem but not so much. And be warry of putting another colour over the top of Henna it can go VERY wrong!!! If I were you I would have any extreme colour changes done by a hairdresser first that way if it goes wrong you can sue!! If it goes well you will have seen the hairdresser do it first and then know how to do it.

I have dyed my hair every red under the sun and somehow never dyed my forehead too...hm. I have however dyed my forehead blue (oops). Funny thing is, now that there's blue streaks in with my current shade of red, people hone in on that as being the unnatural thing and seem to think I'm a natural redhead. -.-;; silly people, such short attention spans.

Whooo, something I can add my .02 to! Um, my experiences with henna haven't really happened, since I have naturally red hair, but I've heard icky things about henna. All in all, chemical dyes seem to look the best, even if they aren't really great for your hair. I use a brand called specialFX, which washes out in 6-8 weeks. I don't know what other countries you can get it in, but if you're in North America, you should be able to get it. Another fairly good dye is Fudge, but I don't think it's quite as good as specialFX, it doesn't wash out as nicely. If you're getting natural colours done, your best bet is to go to a salon, but if you're doing unnatural colours, it's harder to find a salon that does it, so dying it yourself works okay too. But the vaseline is a MUST. I have dyed my scalp blue before. Not so pretty. ohmy.gif
