so im in 8th grade and feeling stressed enough as it is, but now our school is making us prepare for next year. they suggest that we take 3 or 4 years of one langauge; spanish, german, or french. which do you think would be best to take? im thinking spanish because a lot of my friends already speak fluent spanish, but ive always wanted to learn french. also i cant decide on electives. its split between drama, drawing and painting, begining jounalism, and drawing and cartooning. which do you think would be best for a freshman to take in your opinion? how much is high school different from middle school? any pointers? please, help the poor 8th grader? please?

Heh...
I'm a little biased because I took four years of French... rolleyes.gif
I know that, especially in my area, people that speak Spanish are in higher demand for jobs that require you to work with people. Of course, German is always cool too.
I guess just pick one that really appeals to you. You can always switch later...

And as far as the differences between middle school and high school:

I had a lot more opportunities to get involved in academic groups, clubs, band, etc. I was in the marching and symphonic bands, French club, BETA club, National Honor Society, and the ultimate of geek clubs (next to the Chess and Book clubs) the Astronomy club! It sounds really cheesy of me now, but I'm glad that even though my high school was full of blithering idiots, I still got a chance to participate in things like that. It made it more tolerable at least.

It really isn't as big of a transition as you might think it is, so don't sweat it. I'm sure you'll have a good time...smile.gif

Take French. As opposed to something that all your friends know, follow your own heart and take what you want.

;D

I'm going to HS next year too... I want to take Spanish and Chinese [which I'm already taking], Japanese [I'm self-teaching myself] and German [I'm learning the grammar]

*sweatdrop* ^^;

Take french... but it's bad subject if you're lazy, like me biggrin.gif

And journalism... Because writing is good...

I don't know what high school would be like over there, since there's no such thing as middle school where I live, but i'm in year 11 and... well, you've got a while of not really having to worry about school... but year 10 and 11 are pretty work filled... My advice would be to not pick too many hard subjects, I screwed myself over that way in year 10 and got some pretty bad marks. But this year I'm just doing heaps of humanities and doing alot better.

I'm heading to high school too. It took me about 5 minutes to choose classes at registration. And since I live in California, It was a no brainer for me to pick spanish. perhaps I'll take russian as an elective when I'm done w/ it. But as a freshman elective, two words, jazz ensemble.

Ahhh u guys almost makes me wish I'd finnished school. Chester - I know right now it seems like the biggest decision you have to make in life. But I have this to say. Firstly - If there's a career you really want, then go for the subjects which will help you with that.

Secondly - My friends call me a "bum". I have no real goals for my future. I am unemployed and don't study. I live off the government. Most people would also call me a drug addict.

I had dreams when I was younger, just they were crushed my my mental illness. Don't become like me, I don't have much to live for - 'cept my next hit.

So back to my advice, don't stress too much cuz I'm pretty sure you can change your subjects if your not happy with them, and have goals. Cuz what are you even going to school for (other than compulsary) if you aren't going to use what you learn. If your not sure about a career, just pick subjects your good at, or have an interest in. Igor says your good at art, so you might want to do that. Let us know what you decide to do.

Okay, here's the thing about foreign languages. At my school, you pick from either French or Spanish in 5th grade. You continue with that choice until 8th grade (no switches allowed), along with 2 years of Latin from 7th and 8th, and then freshman year are either allowed to start your language credit for your diploma all over again with a different language, or just get it done and over with by 9th grade, and never have to see a foreign language text book again. So I took French from 5th to 8th, Latin in 7th and 8th, and now, in freshman year, am taking Chinese I. Been kinda' busy. @_@;;; From these experiences I can say the following:

1.) Spanish is supposedly a lot easier than French. All I can say is that it seems that way, too. Or maybe it's just the way my brain works. Who knows? x__x;? Take what you want to.

2.) Both French and Spanish have a fair amounts of grammar annoyances that we don't have to deal with in English, sp you won't be getting out of it by taking German or anything (because supposedly that's just as hard, if not more so, from what I've heard from my mum who took it for a couple years in HS).

3.) Take what you're going to enjoy. Seriously. If you're going to be stuck with it throughout HS, take what you're going to enjoy taking, not for "getting into college" and whatnot. That goes for general courses too, from band to journalism to what-have-you.

4.) Marsyas is right when she says Spanish-speakers are generally in higher demand than French or German speakers. How that factors into your decision is totally up to you, and what you want to do. You don't need to decide all this *now*, but just give it some thought. I probably should've taken Spanish, since I live in NYC, which has a huge Spanish-speaking population, but I didn't, so... Yeahhh. Really is up to you. ^__^

5.) Don't try to make the decision alone, hun! Talk to your teachers and parents too, even if that seems really useless and you think your parents will just pressure you to take a certain language etc. etc. They do mean well, and generally will help you as much as possible.

I doubt that really helped whatsoever, but I hope it did. As for electives, take what you're going to enjoy. Really. You're actually really lucky you can take electives in freshman year -- I know I can't! And if you have my problem ( being you want to take them all! ^^;; ) then I suggest talking to a teacher. That is, if you have Course Registration Guidance Counselors... They actually help a ton... blink.gif If you have more specific questions, just gimme a PM and I'll be glad to help you out as much as possible! And don't stress too much, you'll be just fine! biggrin.gif *hugs*

Well, you won't learn enough Spanish in a high school course to really be able to put that you speak it on your resume. I took 5 years of it myself before graduating high school (no, I wasn't a 5th year senior...one of those years was in middle school tongue.gif ) and then I was dropped into a predominantly Spanish speaking area for about 7 months. I learned very quickly that being able to identify a sheep didn't help me at all. College Spanish, however, *did* help me. It was a lot more difficult and I had to study a lot more. My Spanish is still very, very choppy and I'm forgetting most of what I learned...but well...if I'd chosen to take it all 4 years of college, it'd probably be to the point where I could put it on a resume.

Wow. That was long and rambling. Basically, take what you want in high school. If you've always wanted to learn French, then go for it. There's always college to learn Spanish if you think it'd be useful to you. When I started Spanish in college, it was pretty much like starting with a blank slate. Maybe your high school program is better, but mine sure didn't teach me much at all.

High school really isn't that different from middle school. I was terrified too, but it's all pretty much the same. The only difference is now you have to think about what credits you need when signing up for courses...but that really isn't a big deal. Plus, the graduation is way better when you get there. smile.gif There's a lot more activities too, like Marsyas said.

So, don't worry about it...and try to have fun. smile.gif

i'd advise taking as many different classes as you can, be as well rounded as possible. i still regret not taking any shop classes in high school, they would have been a big help in sculpture this term!

I haven't heard of too many high school freshman taking Chemistry their first year, but every school system is different. Just be careful and don't get yourself too overloaded.

take what you want, and never take a class just because your friend is doing it, he/she may like it, but if you don't its a waste of a class to where you could be taking something you like.

Unless you intend to closely work in a french speaking country, french is more or less useless. Spanish has more uses. However german to me seems to reap the most benefits. If you ever want to get into business german and/or japanese will be quite a thing to add on your resume.

As a freshman you shouldn't be worried so much with electives as just coping with the change. It's a good thing you can get electives, when I was a freshman I was not so lucky to get a lot of choice.

Most importantly, relax, don't let the classes get to you, try the Nieztchean child approach and just don't care too much. It's okay to be concerned about things, bu if you ever start caring too much, detach yourself from it. That's how to survive enjoy freshman year. laugh.gif

well chester french is an important language too.you should just learn the language you like.as for high schools everyone has slick ideas and they will tell you frightening things that they think you are bound to come across.do not fear it.you have done it all this way long and be sure that you will not see more difficult or different things.good luck!
