(This is mostly a UK thing)

Well I just got back from the UCAS Fair; almost 200 Universities handing out prospectuses (prospecti?) and cheaply manufactured pens.

It was too mind boggling to have so many Uni's interested in me so I decided to narrow the competition down a little. I will only look at Universities with the best Prospectus Covers.

Mostly I was looking for Medical type Courses but I was very pursuaded by Essex Uni, party due to the cover (biscuits!), the girl talking about it (*faints* wub.gif ) and the fact that she gave me a pack of cards. Oh the course is Psycology...meh.

Other possible uni's would be Peninsula Medical School (Plymouth and Exeter), Liverpool, UCL, Manchester, Durham, Brighton (gay bars yay), Huddersfield (I looked at this one as I didn't believe a place called Huddersfield could exist), London Imperial College, Cardiff and Portsmouth.

Anyone go to any of these places? Or lives near there. I want to know the social aspects of the area as well as the Uni itself.

I live about an hour away from Manchester and my friend goes there... she is studying medicine!! It's a very good university yes... *nods* and they do very good gigs there!!!!

Huddersfield is really quite close to me so unless you wanted to be dragged out to Leeds i wouldn't tell me if you decide to put that on your ucas form!!

*looks back... Oh how i remember the ucas fair, I want cheep pens!!*

But no... machester is very good if you want a medical type course thingy!!
If it helps i could talk to my friend who goes there... she'd no more about that sort of course and could say a tad more about manchester than it's got good gigs!! wink.gif

Gay Mardigra? Heh, i've got to check that out.

But any infomation is helpful Queenie. My friend took the day off from school last year to go to Manchester, mostly to see a girl he likes, but has good things to say about it.

And UEA, I didn't get a prospectus but I'll check it out.

Scanning through some of the ones I did take I see they have whole clubs devoted to particlier interests. That'll hopefully give me a kick start into a social group.

Yeah we had a d00d from Essex uni come along to out school (excuse the l33t speak, ive nearly kicked the habit)and he gave the funnest speech ive heard in a while.Thing is tho, at the same time as making as laugh he was hitting on some preety big points like the top up fees and how different life away from my cushy home life is going to be.
After listening to his advice and tralling through UCAS ive realzied the course that i want to do is named serveral things. I can really see this year being difficult for all undergraduates because everyone will want to get in, just imagine the entry problems and the housing problems. Thats a thought, can i take me PC to unI dry.gif ... humm

Come to Exeter!!! It's lovely, lots of green, a lovely quayside with swans to feed and lots of play parks to have drunken student fun in!! Plus theres a kick ass rock nite on friday and saturday!!!
The Royal Devon and Exeter hospital where you'll be working is very good, I used to be a nurse there. It has received foundation status and is one of the top hospitals in the country so you'll do well there smile.gif

you want to do medicine? champion, but i can't help there. but btw, have you considered doing it via the armed forces, where they sponsor you through uni and you join up afterwards? just wondering, there's a lot of opportuinities in that and it isn't as bad as you might assume.
i'm confused enough trying to figure out what type of course i want to do (mostly chemistry though) and where and whether to do combined or joint. apparently, there's a difference? huh.gif
and more importantly, whether to do a gap year. that's driving me mad. any advice on gap years from this wonderful uni thread of knowledge?

Well I'm from Essex and we are all gorgeous down there but that aside I don't really like the palce much. Not sure about the Uni though. Sorry.

Birmingham kicks arse and I hear Manchester is very good. Exeter also has a recommendation but it was language course. I hear the nightlife is good there.

I am really considering Exeter, especially as I know saucy is there too. tongue.gif

And Armed Forces...hmmm. I really don't feel up to that. Good plan though, I will want to try to find some sort of sponsership.

If I walk a few yards down my road, and look west-ish, I can see the towers of Essex university. My ex-girlfriend went/is there. I don't have any educational knowledge of it really, although I hear that many of the professors there are fairly highly regarded, and that it has quite a good campus. And the area around it is nice too. If you want to know anything about it, ask me, and I'll my best to recover any memories of the uni. or of the surrounding area.

I also had a friend who went to Huddersfield. He said it was a nice uni, but not a lot to do in the immediate surroundings.

I saw the essex towers, the hot girl at the UCAS Fair showed me pictures of her room and the left tower.

My entire life thus far has been guided by the influence of cute booth women.

I happened upon my university (Indiana University) by getting a crush on the girl giving out flyers.

I joined Air Force ROTC because a cute girl gave me some papers to sign. It was worth the hassle though, she happened to fancy wearing cat ears *sigh*

The business for my summer intership payed me basically nothing, but who can say no to a perky geek girl?

Wow... damn.. I don't think I should be one to give out advice. But go wherever the wind takes you, and life will suprise you.

To add to my previous post, I must add Sheffield to the list. Sheffield Hallam or University are both good I hear. Most of my friends are from all over the country, they studied at Sheffield and then decided to stay on as they loved it here. I heard somewhere that it has a high percentage of students who stay on after Uni because of just that reason. I may be wrong but I love the place and could well understand that if it was true smile.gif

On other note, if yu cna't decide, go to loads of open days and get a feel for the place. Then pick somewhere you think you might like to go and could get into with decent grades. Obviously rolleyes.gif I chose Birmingham as my firm conditional and Lampeter as my 2nd place conditional. We didn't have none of those easy peasy unconditional places when I was 18 dry.gif

As spacehappy hasn't spoken up for cardiff, i will! happy.gif

I don't go to Cardiff uni, but i know people that do, its a cracking place, you have a HUGE union (i mean huge, it makes ours look like a cupboard...which it is) you'll be in halls for the first year i'm guessing, you'll be living in a part of cardiff called cathays (pronounced cat-ays, no th sound, don't make that mistake) which is a nice place, a fair few pubs and clubs and bars (theres a particular bar that serve fantastic mexican food). Everything is in walking distance, you're barely a 10 minute walk from the centre of cardiff which has even MORE clubs/pubs/bars (metros and barfly esspecially) plus it happens to be the capital of wales there are a fair amount of band tours that stop by there...thats all i can think of for now...you don't like football do you?

there are of course two down sides, one is there are lots of those people in red bibs that want you to give your student loan to their charities, don't do it, thats at LEAST 2 pints (5 pints in the student union on some nights)....oh and the other thing is it's in wales......

edit: in case you were wondering i go to university of glamorgan...which is about 11 miles north of cardiff, its very close to pontypridd....too close actually, still, the rent's cheaper than cardiff tongue.gif

I went to my "get prospectuses/prospecti?? thrown at you" day on wednesday, and now I'm all panicked about what to do blink.gif
Cognitive science at exeter looked interesting though. I'd like to do something like that. (But maybe thats just because the description said it was for people interested in minds and brains which reminded me of mittens..)

I was quite dissapointed by the lack of free pens! I only got one! I picked up an amazing lime green prospectus though. Hurray for lime green! smile.gif

Hurrah for Huddersfield, my last pen that works...cheap uni's...damn cheap uni's. All those fees and top up fees (soon anyway) and they can't afford to get pens that work!
