I think the idea is to calm traffic by scaring drivers to death

American peeps don't really have traffic islands as far as I'm aware, but for those of us lucky enough to live in the UK, I think if I came across this place whilst driving, I'd be in need of a fresh change of underwear.

Swindon in general is a horrible place to drive around but I think if I was faced with that every morning I'd die!

Heh - I saw the thread title and thought "I'm pretty sure they have islands. What about Hawaii?"

Seriously though, that is one damn scary place.

As a learner driver, that place scares the bejeebus out of me. I can barely handle the double roundabout in Loughton, but THAT is a monstrosity.

Can you say "death trap", kiddies?

I've been round that many, many times (I live only half an hour from Swindon) and it looks a lot worse than it is.

I think the trick is to observe the normal rules for the mini roundabouts but pretty much ignore the big one.

Either that or close your eyes and hope for the best... biggrin.gif

Circle...so many cars...so many ways blink.gif

I can't get behind the wheel for another 2 years, but CRIKEY! Here we have traffic circles, in which they plop a huge concrete circle in the middle of intersecting roads, plant some trees in the middle, and make confusing signs. Navigating around the circle slows down traffic. This is in the SUBURBS. A car crosses one of the streets every thirty seconds. I don't think it does anything...big bother.

Oops. For a moment i thought you meant actual islands, like Long Island. There's a something at the end of my street that cars drive around to make U-turns. It's pretty neglected though.

do they do roundabouts in America?

I love roundabouts, at first they seemed quite scary (especially because the first time I ever drove around one it had a triangle bit between the in and out lanes and as I got to the give way line I was concentrating too much on stopping and drove straight onto the triangle and stalled...woo) but after that I came to love them!

am I just being really slow?

do they do roundabouts in America?

Not nearly as many as they do in the UK, but I know there are at least three or four little ones in Washington D.C.

Personally I think that roundabouts are points of mystical convergence where a very mordern kind of spiritiuality focuses, but that's after spending a rather drunk few hours lying in the middle of one with Jonman on one fo my birthdays.

That junction looks Photoshopped, it that really real?

I wonder what the statistics are for traffic-related accidents on that roundabout(s).

I'm scared just looking at it. *runs away and hides under the couch* sad.gif

the outter bit seems just a little bit redundant to me, theres a little circle in the middle then a bigger one around it, why not make it one big circle, that'd be much more fun to watch.....i mean....sensible >_>

Not to mention spending a couple of hours in the middle of one on the evening of August 13th 1993, firebreathing with a man in swimming goggles.

It doesn't get much more mystical than that.

Sweet Lord. I have enough trouble with the three roundabouts on the island I live on. That ginormous roundabout would probably get me into an accident daily. Plus you wouldn't be able to have any fun riding around in circles over and over without worrying about whom you're going to hit.

Aerial view indeed! .... Correct me if I'm wrong, but that roundabout must achieve the best affect when you're in car, approaching it, seeing it from a 'very close to the ground' angle ... all you would see is something the size of half a football pitch, covered in streaks of paint, with cars all over it going in circles and panic stricken faces screaming "get the f@ck outta the way!!!!!"

Oh God. We don't have anything remotely resembling that in Cincinnati. I don't even understand the purpose of it, much less the traffic rules. And I'm not the best driver out there... I'm sure I'd never emerge from that alive.

And what's this about standing in the middle and firebreathing? Wouldn't that be a bit distracting to people trying to drive, Jonman? But what do I know.
