I've decided to start getting books and such on Latin and teaching myself. Anybody already know some? I only know scientific terms right now, pretty much.

The only thing I remember of Latin (I did it for 2 years 4 years ago) is "Canis est in Via" - "The dog is in the street"

I have no idea how to spell any of the following so I've just typed it as its pronounced. I'd be interested in knows what it means if anyone happens to know a way of finding out. I think it has something to do with 'the lamb of god' or something along those lines unsure.gif

"Anyus dayee quitolis perkarta mundi. Miserai no bis."

Well, I can translate a little bit of that. Sounds like it should be:

Agnus Deii ? ? ? miserae nobis.

It means "Lamb of God something something something our miseries". I think. Don't hold me to that.

I will be glad to help you.

"Verum Acceronia imprudentia dum se Agripinnam esse utque subveniretur matri principis clamitat contis et remis et quae fors obtulerat navaibus telis conficitur"
Tacite: this deals with the murder of Agripinna (the mother of Neron) by neron himself !!!
What a nice family !!!

I would love to learn latin! I'm going to take in in a few years! I began to teach myself but I only know some words, I don't know any phrases though. Right now my mind is going blank and all I can remember is Beaver.

Beaver is castor
I remember that because my rodent looking gym teacher's name is Ms. Castor tongue.gif

Hi,

The Cambridge Latin Course is very good, for a beginner guide look for the Idiots Guide to Latin, for something more advanced - Teach Yourself Latin.

Good Luck.

Check these websites:

Latin Grammar Aid

Lists of Online Latin translators

I mainly know Church and Legal Latin... plus some classical quotes.

Vene vidi vici (I came, I saw, I conquered)
Adjecta alia est (the die are cast)
Quis Custodiet, Ipsos Custodes (Who will guard the guards themselves?)

etc... (and so forth)

You will also want me to spoil the endings!

Ok, err I think in the first one everyone dies. No, almost everyone dies. Apart from this slave and this rich guy. So then this rich guy goes to England. And then it zooms of to Egypt. That's when I got lost in the storyline, and I just stumbled through 3 and 3b. Also, there is no point of learning it unless you want to be a doctor/The Pope really.

I LOVE latin. I must learn. Some way, somehow.

"Non nobis domine, non nobis" - not unto us oh lord or something. a song we sang in chorus. I believe there's a latin word - abyssus - and the word "abyss" comes from it. But I can't be sure. I do have an online friend that speaks Latin. I should ask her about it more often.
